Once again the basketball forum has been corrupted with talk of Heaps. Want to moan about Heaps, go to the football forum.

Where did you get 12? That would basically be a 3 pointer off of each turnover, which wasn't the case.

Wow, I didn't intend for this to become a Jimmer vs Carlino comparison thread, I most certainly didn't intend it to be a Jake Heaps vs Carlino comparison thread. Sr Jimmer is NOT Freshman Carlino. Freshman Carlino isn't even Freshman Jimmer. I am really excited about this kid. I don't remember the last time BYU had a freshman that has his confidence and ability. I think Carlino has the POTENTIAL to be a very good player but he is still a freshman and makes freshman mistakes. We all need to take a step back and just let the kid develop, then enjoy the ride. Any comparisons to Jimmer were only made because that cross over step back 3 he made in the baylor game was Jimmerlike sick.

Maybe something he picked up from Jimmer last year?

What you aren't taking into account GUNK, is the "I can't believe it!!!" emotional multiplier Y4LYFE is putting on the turnovers.

That way, something like 6-7 points directly off turnovers, turns into 12 points for that added rage multiplier.

And it's funny to me, that people give this impression that Carlino turns the ball over prolifically, but none of our other PGs did. Remember Zylstra at point in the Utah State game?

And sure, Cusick doesn't turn the ball over much. He also doesn't score, shoot the ball well from the field, make assists, shoot a high free throw percentage, shoot the 3 decently, rebound, or steal the ball.

Cusicks numbers: Shooting 37% from the field (9-24), 28% from 3pt line (5-18), 2.4 points per game, 68% from the line (8-12), 2.4 assists per game, 1.2 rebounds a game, 0.4 steals a game, with 0 blocks. Oh and only 0.6 turnovers per game. That is literally the only thing that he does well at a collegiate level. And you can do that well by making an easy pass to your wings, and letting them work the ball down low. (Which is what happens when he is in). He brings almost nothing to the game. He is a warm body out there. BYU doesn't push the ball when he is in the game. We go into a lackadaisical half court offense - which is just barely on this side of terrible - and that is what we saw the first 5-8 games with him getting the majority of the minutes.

So, yeah. Focus almost entirely on turnovers. Good call.

And because this thread is "Matt Carlino" here are his numbers:

49% shooting from the field (18-37), 50% from the 3pt line (9-18), 16.7 points per game, 6.3 assists per game, 3.4 rebounds per game (not sure if this stat is right. could be more), 71% from the line (5-7), 2.0 steals per game, 0.6 blocks per game, and currently averages 4.0 turnovers per game.

Throw into all of those numbers that teams actually need to gameplan for him, and guard him during the game - instead of doubling our bigs off him. like they do for all our other players, especially Cusick - and you have a pretty major contributor to the game.

I'm excited to see what he can become, but - most importantly - I'm excited for the player that he is right now. The Cougars are a running team, and they have finally gotten back to that with Matt at the point. They are finally fun to watch, again. I've seen every game this year, and that was missing from the entire first part of the season.

Couldn't have really said it better, Blue. I don't understand the hangup on Carlino's turnovers, especially since Abouo has more than Carlino. No one is calling for Abouo's head.

With Cusick in, defenses can ditch him and double up. Defenses can't ditch Carlino, which affects the game in other areas as well. We're a better team with Carlino on the floor.

Carlino's a scorer. That's what Jimmer was. He makes free-throws, 3s, lay-ups, 2-pt jump-shots, and can find ways to beat the defense. He sounds like a Jimmer.

Cusick has ball control. He doesn't score well.

I don't understand what the plus/minus thing is, it doesn't make sense. Carlino looks like the better player, even though he has a large negative number while Cusick's is a big positive.

I'd like to see Carlino starting over Cusick.

Carlino has started 3 of the 4 games he's been eligible. He is the starting PG.

The story continues to be written--although it looks pretty good and with enough trending to say--

- absolutely he should be the starting PG;

- absolutely he is better in every category than Cusick;

- absolutely he has and may continue to have more turnovers than Cusick--

-AND like it or not, turnovers are an issue in tight games, especially tight conference games;

he does bring a Riley Nelson-like effect (sorry to "corrupt" the Bball forum with football) in terms of his productivity and energy. He really seemed to be a significant force in the 2nd half of the CSUSM game; oh and got himself out of the game in the 1st half, with 16 minutes remaining because of two reckless fouls.

My other concern and we'll have to wait and see what develops. When this team plays unselfish, this team plays great. But there is a tendency for players to "get their shots" and not pass the ball. I think Carlino will effect this dynamic as well. I know this is counter to the actual stats and that BYU is like 16th in the nation in assists--a factor i think that falls naturally out of a fast paced offense more than "unselfish play", but it will be an interesting dynamic to watch.

End of first few paragraphs in the first chapter that is MAtt Carlino: moderate amount of hype (or maybe i just didnt pay attention to much of the hype on a "transfer")+ moderate to moderately high output (especially for a freshman) and the net is a pleasant surprise and definitely a great get.

So far the only negative I see to his game is the turnovers. This doesn't really worry me as this is a normal occurrence early on in young players. I think the turnovers will go down as he plays more; probably sooner than later. I really like his attitude on and off the court. Love how his determination kicked in last night and he nearly single-handedly turned that game around.

Seriously, shut up about Riley Nelson in the bball forum. I mean that in the nicest way possible. It is possible say that Carlino brings energy to the court without saying he brings a Nelson-like effect. You all made the football forum unvisitable with your Heaps vs Nelson negativity, and overall snarkiness. I know quite a few posters that don't visit or lurk anymore because of what went down there. I happen to be one that won't post there anymore until (and IF) it cools down.

As to the topic: Just watch the first half of the game (where Cusick played the majority), versus the second half of the game where Carlino played the majority. Night and day difference.

BYU's half court offense is bad. No motion, no screens, nothing there. Very, very basic halfcourt offense. Where BYU wins games is sprinting past the defense and getting the ball down the floor. Cusick does not do that. Carlino does. BYU is fun to watch when they are doing their offense, and moderately uncomfortable to watch when they aren't. Simple as that.

Seriously, i'm sorry, i meant it in the nicest way about RN and in fact, a very applicable way. When game-changer can come in and spark his team, that is a pretty cool element. I could have said Kyle Van Noy, would that have been as negative?

How about gave a spark like Jimmer or emery or Hansen or something bball applicable? ;)

good one. Although, "jimmer-like" comparisons were poo-pooed as well.

Here is the thing. It is really easy to avoid turnovers when you dribble the ball up, pass to the wing, and then go stand in the corner. It is a lot harder to avoid turnovers when you are constantly attacking and trying to create. If you truly think Cusick should be playing over Carlino, or even that Cusick should have played the whole baylor game instead of Carlino you are seriously lacking in basketball knowledge. You should go talk hoops with Jan Jorgensen, worst radio personality to ever grace the airwaves.

Is anyone really still advocating Cusick to start over Carlino? I think that is old news.
