Haha, no, and I don't mean to be a downer, either. But we should keep in mind that Jimmer was asked to score points, that was his role on the team and what we expected him to do. I'm pretty sure that Carlino's role is more that of a facilitator and that he's asked to distribute to guys like Davies and Hartsock.

MC is going to be a stud. He's still figuring out his role on this team. When he's in control and not in attack mode is when he is best. Needs to continue to let the game come to him. He's going to be a good one.

And while I am advocating just that--YES, it is nice to know he can attack. When he gets it all together. wow. it will be interesting to see if he becomes a triple double threat.

It is early to judge a lot of these guys given how different guys have shown up on different nights and in different situations. Davies and Hartsock should be carrying this team. Hartsock usually does - Davies - not so much. Davies has been disappointing most of the time - but flashes brilliance at times. These are two who have been around long enough to judge. Then you have Charles. Clumsy at times - brilliant at others. He should be more consistent at this stage of his career. A slight disappointment.

Where has Craig Oscarson been lately - COSCO called Hartsock a stud back two years ago when everyone else was doubting him. We should have gotten a big "I Told You So" from COSCO by now. Of the old timers - Hartsock has exceeded expectations - while Davies and Charles have underachieved slightly. But all three have contributed big at times.

Rogers - was meeting expectations until he went down. Hopefully he gets back in time to make late season and post season contributions. And CC - injury prone. It would be nice to have that depth in reserve. Harrison and Austin nicked up a little. I hope injuries do not kill us as we have

a lot of potential in the kids on this team if our few vets stay healthy to lead the newbies. Zylstra, Cusick, Austin, and Winder - clearly exceeding expectations. Clearly. With these surprises, BYU has a good team instead of a poor to mediocre one.

Harrison - about as expected. Mostly Potential at this stage. No comment on others - except

Carlino - he has certainly shown that he will be a player. Consistency and learning curve for this kid will determine whether BYU finishes this season as a top 20 surprise or as a 1 and done tourney team.

We do not have Jimmer. Carlino will not replace a senior Jimmer fully this year if ever. Charles nearly gives us a Jackson E shut down defender, just needs to remember his role and avoid turnovers and bad shot selection. Hartsock is better. Davies needs to step up. Others need to keep contributing as they have done. Carlino needs a triple double every now and again.

Fun to watch.

I think Carlino is a good rebounder as well. That's helping spring the break as well.

Out of control, sometimes, but I just don't see how you can knock his shot selection. For a guy that takes bad shots, he sure makes a lot of them. :bug: ;)

I'll just bring you all down to earth a bit and remind you to take a look at his TOs. They are bad. Very bad. He can improve every week, and his 22 points make it easier to forget, but he gave up 4 big TOs that led to 12 points to Baylor and a few straight passes to Buffalo players also led to big plays.

I'm just helping you all avoid pulling a Heaps. Be watchful AND patient.

I can't believe UCLA basically gave up on this kid. Love me some Carlino. What's an acceptable A/TO ratio for a PG?? 2:1 or 3:1...... Granted the higher the better. Matt was 6/3 last night I believe.

He pushes the ball up the court, past the defenders.

This is going to happen if you play this style of ball. Even Jimmer had 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 turnovers a night sometimes.

Steve Nash is another shining example of this. He is - no doubt - one of the greatest point guards ever, but he has maybe double or triple the TO average (while doubling the assists).

It just comes with the style of ball. If you want a turnover free guard position, I suggest you watch a different team.

There is a difference between measuring expectations with being objective, and being flat out ridiculous. Carlino is - right now - a good guard, that pushes the tempo. One day he will hopefully be a great guard, that minimizes turnovers, and takes good shots while pushing the pace. As it stands now, BYU is a good team, and running the floor for 48 mins is what the do best (or even better than average on offense. Their half court offense is passable, but not even great). Dave Rose is the Mike D'Antoni of college basketball (with just a teensy bit of defense sprinkled in). If you don't like that style of play, then don't watch it. But don't try and rain on the parade of people that are enjoying it :)

Can we stop comparing Carlino's numbers to Jimmer's? Jimmer handled the ball way more and was expected to do a lot more than Carlino.

Why? Because the less we artificially inflate an athlete's ability the less chance we have to disparage that athlete when he falls; or has the temerity to make promises of glory and shatters our fragile pathetic world's when he doesn't?

Bah humbug. ;-)

Why?

Because I don't want every athlete with an ounce of talent to become as divisive as Jake was. He sold us all a bag of snake skin oil.

Because the less we mention Mr. Heaps, the better off Cougar nation will be.

Some people are already on the Carlino bandwagon because he is a great scorer who actually wants to have and shoot the ball- the only guy on this BYU team with that attitude... and he's only a freshman!

Some people want to take the more hesitant wait-and-see approach with Carlino, because it's clear that he is still adjusting to this level of competition. He plays too fast at times, out of control, and makes some terrible decisions that lead to turnovers and quick, easy points for the opponent. Something that walk-on Cusick, to his credit, almost never does.

As for me? I've noticed that he's our #1 guy in dishing out assists right now. And he's not a bad rebounder either. I love the fact that he plays faster than our other 1 and 2 guards, that he can pass pretty dang well, and that he already can play the role of a good facilitator. So it's looking at the rest of the statsheet that I really see the bright times ahead with this kid.

Semantics. The shot selection I am talking about us when he drives, gets clumsy and out of control, and then forces and badly misses a lay up. When he takes open shots in the flow of the offense, he is very good. This was a particular issue early this season and most of last season.

So , you actually bought the NC talk? You got snuckered by an 18 year old kid whose head was full of dreams and himself? Well, I'll tell you what....I have a cold weather vacation (or ice if you are an Eskimo) i'd like to sell you. It will only cost you 10k.

So great, lets quit sniping at and about Heaps...and pick on any other despicable fool who dares mention a NC or anything else that builds the fragile hopes of the Cougar faithful...starting with Bronco. Lets throw the bum out if he doesn't bring us our precious NC within the next few years. Its outright heretical to pick on our vulnerable expectations that way.

From Wrubell's tweet: Nelson on BYU's prospects for 2012: "The best way to get excited about the future is end on a bowl win, ten-win season and get rolling."

Thats IT! if RN doesn't deliver a win next week--he's off my Christmas card list and Im not going to games next year. I will not tolerate making promises he doesn't deliver on.

I'm glad Carlino hasn't been interviewed yet. But his good play is starting to get dangerously close to building my expectations that he is the next National Player of the year and the next LEGEND Point Guard for us to worship. Sheesh.

Y4LIFE is right, though. Aside from not building false hope, patience by anyone prone to believe that he is the next Jimmer might be best.

Here's an idea: STOP ALLUDING TO JAKE HEAPS! He wasn't a very good qb when he was here, he was responsible for a lot of his own hype, and he's not here anymore. We all know who was in what camp, just let it go.

Its sarcasm intended to call out hypocracy. I'm fine.
