Yep now 26-6 against the mighty Gaels since 99-00, that was their 6th win in the last 32 games against GU.

And you're, what, 2-3 in your last 5 against them?

Ooooh you got me there. Yep and 3-3 in 6 and 4-3 in 7.

For the record they beat us once this year, once last year and once the year before and have played us tough each and every year for the last 5.

Let's see we have SMC theirs fans and the Australian continent and BYU and your fifty million church members worldwide against little ol GU, we're doomed.........or not.

Of our three teams who has the most room to improve between now and Vegas?

The game against GU may be the best game SMC has played this century although their run in the tournament in 2010 was impressive. Other than infusing more Waldow not much room for improvement.

BYU, you tell me where you can improve.

GU, to me, has the most room to improve and the highest ceiling as we aren't playing well together as a team.

For the real smart guy who asked about our post season we lost our last game. How about you?

Take all the shots you want the truth is in the last decade GU is responsible for the upgrade in talent in the WCC. The Gales are ranked today because they beat GU not because they beat Kennesaw State or BYU.

Although the race appears to be between BYU, GU and SMC our conference brethren will play a determining factor before it's over.

Hope you lose.

wow, I didn't think we'd get such a reasonable response. Good post. BUT, SMC's win over BYU AND GU is the reason they are ranked.

Tough crowd here on both grammar and spelling.

OK Mars now that you've shown me your genius please expound and tell me how the Cougars are going to improve before Vegas as that would be more interesting to all who read here and much more important than you correcting my typo.

Bigblahla, a little while ago some GU fan got on here and made some snyde remarks about a poster's typo regarding SMC. Just returning the love you're showing us.

GU is regressing, not progressing. Sacre is playing worse than he did last season and worse then he was at the beginning of the season against lesser opponents. Pangos, is the new "star" of the show but it's at the expense of Sacre and your post play. Harris was playing better at the beginning of the season too. After Pangos, your PG is Stockton - a good ball distributor and good spot up shooter, but that's it.

As far as BYU improving goes, let's take a look:

January 6 - 16th in pts/game, 19th in rebounds/game, 5th in assists/game, and 24th in field goal percentage.

January 17 - 10th in pts/game, 13th in rebounds/game, 3rd in assists/game, and 15 in field goal percentage.

Let's look at GU:

January 06 - 68th in points/game, 73rd in rebounds/game, 116th in assists/game, and 98th in field goal percentage

January 17 - 78th pts/game; 76 rebounds/game; 103rd in assists/game; and 86th in field goal percentage

GU is hardly the epitome of improvement. Meanwhile, BYU in the last two weeks has improved it's Top 25 rankings in every category.

Might I suggest, bigblahla, before coming on here and making random blanket statements about how awesome and dominant the Zags are you do bit a homework. Whatever GU did in the past has been thrown out the window.

Oh, we're not. Carlino, a freshman who began the season late, has come about as far as he can ever hope to by now. Other young players -such as Winder, Austin, Harrison, Sharp, and Cusick- have no room for improvement. Rogers and Collinsworth have no chance of coming back from injury. Coach Dave Rose won't be spending any practice time on the perimeter defense. There's no way the team could gain any confidence from a tough out-of-conference road win over Virginia Tech. And certainly playing St. Mary's at home in the Marriot Center in Provo won't make any difference in the final outcome of that game.

No, it's pretty clear that only Gonzaga has any room left for improvement. Hard to get worse from how they played in their last games and SMC and BYU, at least...

You can't see where we have room for improvement? How many freshmen do you have starting or playing significant minutes? We have a ton, so unless they've all hit their ceilings midway through their first season, we'll continue to improve every game. If you saw our first couple games this season, you'd be amazed at how much better we are now.
S

Yes huge difference between the first game without a PG to today. The teamwork has improved a ton. A few games ago the assists were like 95% of all baskets made. The freshmen are getting experience at this level which will benefit them.

I saw Pangos in his first game and he looked all league. I have not heard much about him since. To be honext I have not seen much of your team yet. I will when we play you.

We have had two big problems in each of our losses: Long stretches of stagnant offense and (excepting the Utah State game to start the year) letting opponents get hot from three-point range (Wisconsin: 54%, Baylor 52%, St. Mary's 48%).

The stagnant offense has been much less of a problem since Matt Carlino became eligible, as he tends to push the ball much more, and he presents a greater scoring threat on the perimeter. As many people have said, he's only played 10 games and he's learning to make better decisions with the ball.

Since the St. Mary's game, no one has shot better than 36% from three against us (Santa Clara). It's hard to know how much of that is because of our improvement and how much is because of the level of competition, but it is improvement, nonetheless.

Don't pretend that "room for improvement" (which Gonzaga has shown most recently) is more important than actual improvement (which BYU has shown most recently). Portland has all kinds of room for improvement, but that's not going to win them a conference title anytime soon.

You're right. Gonzaga does have more room for improvement. As it stands they are getting worse each week; thus, more room for improvement.

You really aren't going to add much to this board, are you? Just another one of "those" fans, classless and insufferable in winning, non-existant or classless in losing. I really do hope Gonzaga finishes 3rd in BYU's new, temporary little league. Looks that way at the moment.

Agree about the difference between room for improvement and actual improvement and not pretending about anything. Note the Gaels beat the Pilots 69-61 in Moraga right after the massacre. Does that means the Pilots are better than GU? No, it shows how well the Gaels played and how poor we played in that game, it happens.

Our issue at GU is playing on the same page with our glaring weakness at the 3. Carter is too small and has regressed and Edi hasn't proved to be the answer. Hart although a hustle player has little offense and our M2 fellas Keita and Hoff both have issues. Our best option Dranginis, another frosh, is red-shirting.

Sacre has nagging injuries but really only needs to give us 8pts and 6rbs consistently while playing "D". Where we really need Big Rob is in leadership which both he and Carter were counted on bringing to the team but is lacking at this time..

Most GU fans are struggling with Pangos, Bell and Stockton being on the floor together to close games. Love Stocks but he's so slight of build he gets abused on "D" at times.

Spangler is now out for 3 weeks with a finger injury sustained in practice requiring surgery so we really only have Sacre, Dower and Harris to man the front court.

Compared to last season at this time we have a better conference record but our season will hinge on the development of our young guards and the reemergence of Big Rob.

This is going to be the best conference race in years.

We don't believe the WCC conference title is our birthright. We know each and every year it's a new season and a new battle and we welcome the challenge.

Wow, sure didn't take you long to figure out Mars. Spot on analysis.

One thing I wish the WCC did was a balanced schedule. I think it's a bit of a joke BYU will play some conference teams twice (SMC, LMU, USD twice) before we've played some teams once (GU, Portland). That makes looking at the standings and seeing who is really at the top of the league hard to do. Conference play should be the same - you play everyone once (home or away) and then flip the venue in the 2nd half of the schedule.

Was it like this in previous years? It seems weird to me.

Well said bigblahla. i also was wondering about that schedule. There will be some big games at the end of the season. I wonder if some late losses can hurt your NCAA chances? Tv must like it though.

Spiff,

It's the darn 9 team thing and no the schedule has never been this way and it will be interesting if they flip it next year or re-do it. As a Zag fan I'm torn between adding the 10th team knowing we lose two more OCC games which up to the arrival of BYU were just as important to the rest of the WCC as they are for GU because of the type of teams we schedule in the OCC portion of the season. This schedule will effect the outcome as all teams ebb and flow over the course of a season.

It will be interesting in Vegas for sure. I made it to Vegas the first two years missed last year, won't be there this year but hoping for next.

Who doesn't want in the tournament but we usually get the shaft in seeding. Example; two years ago we were dropped at least two seed lines and ended up playing the #1 defensive team in the country to be followed by the #1 offensive team in the country a hundred miles from their campus this had never happened before in the NCAA tournament. Why? Because BYU doesn't play on Sundays so we were expendable and always have been. Not a slight at BYU it's what happened.

When it's tournament time it is a BCS BS show however when teams like Butler or VCU get through it becomes special. Many other examples but it's all spilled milk at this point and it really doesn't matter anyway as you have to win to advance yet some roads are much easier than others and not always deserved.

I'm a different Zag fan as winning the conference regular season title is good enough for me. I haven't forgotten that you could walk into a GU game at half time without a ticket and sit almost anywhere. We are a small school in a small conference with a nationally and internationally recognized basketball program capable of recruiting throughout the world so I feel pretty darn lucky.

We don't have the power or reach of a BYU with your own network but every one of our games is on the tube so it's a great time to be a Zag fan.

As far as the streak goes it's said all good things come to an end but most Zag fans are hoping to eclipse the Bruins record as we all expect an asterisk to be placed by our name in the record book, if it occurs, and to us that's a medal of honor.

There has never been anything wrong with a new beginning.

We understand about getting the shaft with tourney seeding, though last year was kind of an exception (the Jimmer effect).

One quick correction though. Denver is actually more like 500 miles from Provo. About the same distance between Gainesville and New Orleans (where we played Florida). Granted, that's still about half the distance from Spokane, just thought it'd point that out.

tmoney, I think our new Zag fan was referring to two years ago (2010) when Gonzaga beat Florida State in the first round and then lost big to Syracuse in round 2 in games which were played in Buffalo (hence the 100 mile from campus reference). The thinking is that BYU having to be in a Thursday-Saturday round (where we beat Florida and lost to Kansas State in Oklahoma City I believe, which isn't too far a stone's throw from Manhattan, Kansas btw) caused the Zags to drop a couple of lines and then sent a shufflin' to Buffalo. Happens to the Cougs frequently (remember Xavier in Louisville I think it was a few years back?) Mr. Blah....I happened to be in Spokane that weekend two years ago for the games in the Spokane Arena. Enjoyed the weekend immensely (but not quite as much as in Denver last year). Watched the Zags/Cuse game with a packed house eating breakfast burritos in a great sports bar downtown. Should be a couple of good games over the next month or so. I for one appreciate your insight and comments. :) GO COUGARS!

WCC messed up the scheduling big time this season.

Come tomorrow we'll already have played SD and LMU twice. We got SMC in the opening week, but for some reason we don't them again until the end of the season and it's right after playing GU. :skeptic:

Realize there are 9 teams, but I don't see why that would prevent the WCC from scheduling it so everyone plays each other once through and then repeats.

I do like the fact that with the way the WCC tournament is set up there is a bit more of a reason to the season. Although, not a fan of the tournament lasting nearly a week. Realize they moved the championship game to Monday on account of us (very nice of them), but why not start the tournament on Tuesday and play the championship game on Sat. so we're not left twiddling our thumbs over Sunday.

A 10th team would be nice if they got a team that adds some more depth to the conference. MWC will implode after this season. SDSU is Big Wes bound, perhaps UNM. I don't want UNLV.
