Against WCC competition, instead of D1AA level competition...

Against similar opponents (ie games they both played).

Carlino Assists - Opponent they played - Cusicks Assists

2 - Baylor - 4

11 - Buffallo - 3

6 - USCB - 0

0 - UCSSM - 1

6 - SMU - 3

3 - USD - 3

7 - LMU - 0

4 - USF - 2

8 - USCB - 0

2 - USD - 0

3 - LMU - 4

2 - Pepperdine - 2

Carlino - 57 assists against similar opponents (since he has started playing)

Cusick - 19 assists against similar opponents.

1 - It's 57 not 54.

2 - I think that these numbers might be a little more better for comparing the two. If Carlino played those other games, it stands to reason that he would have triple the assists that Cusick does...

And we aren't even getting into ppg, rpg, spg, and all of the other things that Carlino is DEMOLISHING Cusick on.

You might want to add how many minutes they each played in those games. And for fun see if you can bring yourself to put in the turnover data. That is where you missed the mark. Note that I already asked Spiff to add scoring and defense stats.

I really don't understand the hate for Cusick here. He's ahead of Carlino in every stat except for free-throw shooting. He's got better FG and 3PT percentages, and a much better assist to turnover ratio. I agree that Carlino probably has a higher ceiling, but right now Cusick is playing better, and Rose is rewarding his steady play with more playing time.

Of course, BlueIsBetter is probably a much better coach than Rose, so we should give him free reign.

Multi-talented guy. Great football coach too.

Why don't we add up all the points we give away when Cusick is playing defense as well?? Most of the complaints are that we can't stop good teams defensively while Cusick and Zylstra are on the floor. That's a fact. We can find offense as we have a lot of weapons it's just that our defense is suffering and some personnel changes would greatly help. Add in more minutes for Harrison, Winder, and Rogers when he gets healthy and we might be able to have a pretty dang good defense. Watching people do your job doesn't make you better. Practice and game time experience does

Edited to add minutes played in each game, and to correct some bad math:

2/20 - Pepperdine - 2/23

Carlino - 54 assists against similar opponents (since he has started playing)

Cusick - 22 assists against similar opponents.

So to get to 54 assists against the same teams, it took Carlino 317 minutes. For Cusick it took 190 minutes to get to 22 assists.

On an minutes to assists average, Cusick has one assist for every 8.6 minutes on the floor, Carlino has one assist for every 5.9 minutes.

Of course Cusick is going to have more assists per minute played just due to the fact that he can't score unless he's wide open. Carlino actually tries to score the ball and granted he makes some bad decisions at times his overall game will be much superior

So you must disagree with Coach Rose's decision to have Cusick finish the game instead of Carlino?

Why did Rose go with Cusick to finish the game? Because he needed a win and his stats and gut told him in at least that game (maybe not all) Cusick gave him a better chance over Carlino.

Long term, maybe not. BUt Carlino has to learn a few lessons, like not jacking up three's like he's Jimmer. So many on this forum thought Heaps should have been benched much sooner and look and learn. I think that is what Rose is doing now. Look and learn and realize this year our bigs give us our best chance to win. When he learns that lesson, and puts first things first, and that he is not the hero he hopes to be, then he will be trusted more completely. AGAIN, I'm not bagging on Carlino and extolling Cusick. NOt trying to create a controversy for entertainment purposes. I want both to succeed and ultimately, Carlino to figure things out. He has tremendous upside--Baylor game showed that.

Well said, dmcougar (who thought I'd ever utter those words in this lifetime?? ;)).

There is no better learning tool than watching someone else do what you want to be doing. Learn from their mistakes and their successes and you'll be miles ahead of where you'd otherwise be.

Thanks Hawk. I'm sure other posters won't hold it against you. ;-)

To reiterate, based on additional posts, it is in game adjustments that will optimize who would be better. If carlino is hot--easy. If there is no pressing, and carlino has been ineffective, also easy--Cusick was Rose's choice to finish out that game. Verses LMU, I would venture to say that this changes. Either way, can we really bag on one guard and not the others? It's the source of our weakness on D.

Good thing we have this thread. This place is a graveyard.

I hope the mods are getting some vacation time from CC. Of course Bib keeps Spiff on the job asking for more stats.

I would say that the one stat that of plus/minutes when a player is on the floor and not has more validity than than many posters gave it. It can't be taken at complete face value, but Rose was informed by either stats or intuition when he decided to have Cusick finish the game.

Carlino actually has more assists per minute than Cusick.....by quite a large margin.

Well - I was hoping someone has some FACTS on that so we can see if it is even true that he is more of a defensive liability. FACTS debunked the turnover myth. I don't have the facts, and as I stated earlier, I did not see which of our guards started the last two games by letting the less-than-stellar opponent jump right out to a quick double-digit lead.

Who started at guard. Really who was at 1, 2, and 3. I know Abouo has been great at times and absolutely horrible at other times. All have been inconsistent. They are young, except Charles, who just needs to play within his limitations and still does not get that at times.

DM hit it - Rose needs to try to win every game. He needs to figure out which inconsistent guard is hot at a given moment and / or right for a specific situation or match-up. That is what coaches do along with getting guys rested at the right moments and managing foul trouble when Charles grabs two quick ones.
