If I was a Gonzaga coach, I would try very hard to get the same crew and then smile as the BYU fans disrupt the game and got more technicals. My most unfavorite team, USC, has a fight song that goes, "Fight on for old SC". Do the Cougars have one that goes, "Whine on for BYU?."

You troll USC's board too?

If you live in proximity to Los Angeles, you don't have to troll the board - they dominate the L.A. media.

Not what I asked.

While there is no justification for throwing things, how often has that happened at BYU?

BYU was bringing and will still bring class to the WCC--we just didn't count on the fact that we would have to be dealing with high school caliber refs. they should rename the conference WRCC--worst refs coast conference. Where's Hair Thompson? Im almost willing to accept UNLV's home court advantage for the MWC tourney as being less "worse" than these sham officials.

I'd take playing at UNLV over high school Refs. You can get used to playing at a certain local every year. You can't get used to inconsistent, poor officiating and it affects more than one game.

WCC with its high school gyms must come with high school refs.

Not a problem. The WCC has had its share of bad fan reactions during the past several years but never like the one Saturday night. Yes, the officiating was bad, but that does not justify disrupting the game by fans throwing things on the floor. For a program that is used to winning, especially at home, it has to be traumatic to experience losses like the Cougars have had this year. That does not excuse poor fan reaction.

True WCC fans thought that the addition of BYU would not only bring additional quality to the conference, but a sense of class that had been somewhat lacking. In other words, BYU was bringing us into the "big time." Saturday night has us wondering. Playing in that beautiful arena is intimidating enough - wondering if it is safe is another story.

I really thought it would take more than one season before we got this condescending crap from other fans. We had a very small minority of students who behaved very poorly. We know that. We get it. These are kids and kids are prone to do something stupid. No one that I have seen is saying their behavior is acceptable. Our AD was in front of the student section immediately letting them know it was unacceptable. I fully expect our administration to address this quickly.

Please take your condescending, holier than thou garbage and spew it somewhere else. You might want to start with St. Mary's and the terrible things some of their fans were screaming at Davies the last game. Or maybe you have already done that. Given how quick you are to judge a whole fanbase by a few peoples actions, I suspect you have been calling them out for the past few weeks. Right?

Northern, our student section sits more than most WCC gyms. SMC likely has roughly 8k fans across their fan base really following them this season. BYU has about 500k across the nation. This is completely lost on our conference mates, so when a few thousand (a drop in bucket for BYU) act up it throws them for a loop.

The condescending tone is alive and well within the WCC. Just go look at the other teams' forums. Said it before, I give it three seasons until once again we're dealing with "clever" student sections and everyone wanting to pick a fight with BYU. Everyone loves to hate BYU and that hasn't changed.

A couple of observations, first of all throwing things on the court is never justified, and even with that, what is that supposed to accomplish.

Now given that, I was at the game Saturday and I could not believe how much that game was influenced by the refs. Also, being at the game, you do not have the luxury of instant replay, multiple camera angles, and close up camera views. You are left with watching real time from your seat. Every time a St. Mary's player fell, a foul was called. I have never seen so many calls based on reactions before. Emotions were high throughout the arena, and some 18-24 years olds responded foolishly, so now lets classify an entire university, and religion based on those few. Let's forget that this was the same student section that received so much praise from Baylor's fan base for the sign towards Robert Griffin III, or the same student section that hours before had signs wishing St. Mary's coach a quick recovery.

The WCC has never had more than 2500 fans together at any given time, so there you go.

Add ten times the amount of people, and an absolute handjobbing by some of the most unprofessional, egotistical refs, to ever ref the game, and you have a cause for concern.

Any ref that hands out 6 technicals in 2 games' work (neither of which included any player skirmishes or Ron Artest type behavior) needs to seriously be evaluated.

Perhaps these 3 blind mice for refs had never heard boos complimenting their calls from such a large fan base. Too bad we couldn't have piped in our opinions from outside the state. Bottom line is the refs got rattled, took it personally, and put their own stamp on the game - which was special delivery. They need to be evaluated and shown how to not adversely impact a game with very questionable calls.

I have never seen so many offensive fouls called than this season. It's insane.

Imagine, though, what would have happened if those refs officiated the same way they did against us at say...UNC, Duke or Syracuse. You can bet much more than paper would have been thrown on the court.

I'm really not all that bothered by paper being thrown on the court. If it had been directed at a specific player, team or coach then I would probably be more irrate about it. However, the refs are professionals. Other than the coaches they are the only other ones drawing a salary off the sport, the proceeds of which pay their salaries. They need to do their job right.

Was the throwing of garbage at garbage refs justified? Probably not. But, it got people talking about the poor officiating. You can bet it got the WCC talking.

I guess if one is from LA it is considered a complement to wonder aloud whether or not someplace is safe... you see ...in LA it isn't even a question ;)

That said, my first thought when I turned off the game on Saturday is that there will be a great manny WCC fans that had expected better of us, and had I watched another WCC school behaving as badly as our fans did, I would think the same of them.

Agree. I expect better from our fan base. A lot better. From what I can tell, just about everyone expects better from our fan base.

I was just hoping that WCC fans weren't arrogant and pompous enough to wander onto our board and tell us what morons we are. Obviously I was wrong.

BYU is held to an impossible standard and many people feel it is their obligatory right to make sure we know that we haven't lived up to it. Obviously we can't figure it out on our own.

I don't think you know what that word means.

Not a single post on here even hints to the idea that anyone from the WCC is out to get us. The MWC was never out to get us either. They just hated us and loved to tell us that all the time. It is very clear from your posts that you know much better than we do how we should act.

Not "chastising" - just an expression of disappointment, not only in fan actions but in at least in my perception, that you have not brought much more to the conference than whining. I don't expect anyone to sit back and let criticism go unanswered but the responses to my simple post are really off the wall. What does the accusation of "condescending" tell you?

Further, the accusation of my "arrogance" is really funny when compared to the constant WCC "high school gym" slams. We're happy with them and with our programs and with our 5,000 to 10,000 students.

I find it fascinating that BYU hasn't been in the conference for a full season yet, and you feel the need to come here and express disappointment that some fans weren't happy with officiating and then you are surprised that people didn't take kindly to what you had to say.

After the great reception we received when we joined the WCC, I am quite disappointed that you felt the need to come on here and tell us how disappointed you are. Your response on here is quite different from how we had been treated so far. You sound like a mother who had their child insulted.

Really? We have a spectacularly bad game both on the court and with respect to our fans, and now "All" we've brought to the conference is whining? We didn't have anything to do with the fact that more conference games are now on ESPN? Nothing to do with the potential to move the conference to a three bid conference on a more regular basis? Nothing to do with ALL of the schools getting their games broadcast nationwide? Didn't BYUtv broadcast the entire WCC conference tournament last March? Are you serious when you say we've just brought whining? I've appreciated your candor before oldestlion, but you really come across here as having a pretty high opinion of yourself....Hyperbole much?

Look, I'm sorry that the small gym jab hurts you so much... you gotta let it go. What did you really expect to read when you are here? It's not like you're getting a lot of crap at the LMU message board about that stuff are you?

There are a bunch of fans here that are disgusted with what happened Saturday, but like I'd expect you to do if your family got into trouble, it's one thing to talk to your family about their spectacular screw up, it's another thing to have your neighbor come over and try preaching... I think that in the future, should LMU have a great meltdown of epic proportions, you'd not be too happy to see us over there telling you how disappointed we were in you... how you're not really adding ANYTHING to the neighborhood but whining. It is a bit brutal to have other fans use this one instance to castigate an entire population of fans, it's not like this happens on any sort of regular basis.
