20 wins isn't something to be proud of. It's barely acceptable. If we finished with just 20 wins, that would be the same as finishing with 8 football wins. That's the bare minimum. The question is whether 10 football or 24 basketball wins is "ho-hum." I don't think either is ho-hum and both should be well thought of.

And yes it is VERY good to get to 24 wins in a rebuilding season.

I hope my comment didn't construe a lack of appreciation for 10 FB wins/24-25 BB win seasons. I think the FB forum has made it clear that Bronco's string of 10-win seasons isn't impressing some fans. It impresses me, as does Rose's success. But once you start performing consistently at a decent level, that level becomes the expectation.

Oldestlion, I hear you and I wouldn't be surprised if we came across as snooty and ungrateful - but the expectations are based on performance. We've got reliable coaches, some good young players, and we've been recruiting well. If you went back to, say, 2004-2005, I think fan expectations would be much lower. If our program starts to sputter, or Rose moves elsewhere, I think 20 wins would be more tolerable to most fans.

Basketball, unfortunately, at BYU and on this forum is the younger sibling to Football. As a result, until we do something phenomenal there won't be as many eyes directed at it.

BYU fans are fickle too. The bball team didn't give them much to get excited about this season. We've lost to every ranked team we've played. We got stomped in our opening WCC game and beaten two times on our home court this season, which was supposed to be impossible. The balloon has been deflated. The team has been cast off until they prove "worthy" of the bandwagoners.

Gonzaga was in the Top 25 when we beat them by double digits... :)

DR says the team will practice to improve in specific areas until they start to prep for the next opponent starting Thursday.

So who is that opponent? Where is the game? How do we match up? What is the line?

My guesses - Pepperdine, Saturday, Provo. Will this be the game where our guards are not over-matched and can just relax and drain 3s?

I expect a good shooting game vs Pepperdine.

This is the first time in a long time our guys have had a chance to rest. From Jan 5 to Feb 4 they played 10 games in 31 days. With the final 4 games being played in just 11 days. It's no wonder our shooting dropped off. Guys were tired with all the travel and sheer number of games.

Is it a coincidence that our six game struggles from behind the arc started in the second game of a 7 game in 17 day stretch?

I understand these guys are students too but 10 games in 31 days would be heavenly for an NBA team. This season it would be 15 games in 31 days.

The Bibster is predicting that BYU will go 25-9 after going 1-1 in WCC tournament and 0-1 in The Big Dance. This assumes a loss at Gonzaga. It could be slightly better or worse. Maybe an NIT gig would actually boost the wins with some home games. A third place WCC finish regular season may give us two more wins in WCC. I will go out on a limb here - BYU 25-9 is worst case.

That was the OP point. I edited and added the + in the title to make it clearer where I was and am coming from.

This is a rebuilding year. Will we be reasonably satisfied?

If we make it to the dance, I will be satisfied. We need to go dancing every year - building or not. Next season will also be a "building" season as we'll lose Noah and Charles.

Any key losses to missions or - heaven forbid - suspensions or transfers expected? Imagine this year if Davies had not fought back.

We may lose Harrison, but I believe that is it.

Title in OP updated again. I will update it a few more times as we march towards 25 wins.

Bib, did you go to school with Mitt Romney? Why would you keep changing the title? It changes the context of the thread. How could a 25 win season be ho hum? Of course without any signature wins, you are partially right. But I think it is mostly bc last year the fandemonium was meteoric. How could this season possible compare to last for especially the fair weather folks?

It does seem a bit odd how the football season and hoops season win count SHOULD have folks Rising and Shouting, but those win totals do lack the luster that should normally be given to 10 and 25 win seasons. Maybe that's your point?

That is the point and the reason I put the + in the title before. Although our football and basketball teams - in this rebuilding year for both - fell far short of perfection, they both have exceeded what objective third parties projected and IMHO have earned more fan support than they have received as a team - and in many cases as individuals.

Had to update the title again - for about 32 seconds, I didn't think I was going to need to do that tonight.

Although Rose defended him on post game comments - Charles Abouo almost singlehandedly handed a win to USF in the last couple of minutes. Shooting too early in the shot clock, off balance, driving out of control to the basket early in the shot clock - and yes, he did hit a 3 right before that and get a good transition layup right after that, but giving up three possessions with zero points and almost no time off the clock, with an 8 point lead - selfish.

Rose said he was ok with shooting early given the trapping defense trying to force a turnover - is a reason to shoot it or lose it. I do not agree. Bad shots early are worse than a turnover late in the clock.

I agree Bib. I was ready to place blame for this very, very near miss on Coach. Come up with a freaking scheme to counter the trap defense, Coach. We love ya, but c'mon, you almost gave this game away. You gotta do better than that. Coach lucks out with a very tough shot by Matt and some misses by USF. Otherwise methinks cougar nation unleashes some anger on Coach if we lose.

FWIW I disagree, they weren't bad shots, the time of the shot was bad, but they had been going down earlier. Rose's system is that you don't pass up open shots, we live by that sword and die by it. We lived by it tonight, we can't get all bothered and pretend that we actually died by it.
Q

The 2nd 3 Abouo shot was a bad shot because he misjudged how quickly the defense would close.

It also appeared he could have gotten Davies the ball.

If you take a "good" shot at the wrong time, I'd consider that a bad shot. If we'd have lost the game, I'd put it squarely on Abouo's broad, muscular, baby-head shoulders. Up eight with three minutes left and you're shooting eight seconds into the shot clock? C'mon!
C

Agreed. Maybe this is the wrong thread for this usf chat, but it wasn't just once for abouo. It happened after several timeouts. I put that on Rose. Box Charles ears if you have to. Jump up and down and scream. Do something. Show some game planning or at least in game adjustment. Keep chewing clock and make them foul. Dumb. And. Love Coach Rose. Just think he over applied his philosophy.

Maybe Rose was trying to get away from HoHum.
