What exactly does BYU not teach or expose their students to that you think they should, Larry? I know this may be a difficult question since you never attended (and yes there is a big difference between BYU-I and BYU -H) , especially considering several other posters have commented on BYU teachings that expose students to other ideas. But do your best, please.

Big differences, like openly atheistic, gay, feminist, pro choice, etc. professors? All the BYUs are the same in not exposing students to these viewpoints in a meaningful way.

Not a big deal; just saying that some home school their kids to protect them from these same types of viewpoints as well.

Also, why would you study what's wrong when you know what's right? Why wouldn't you strive to further understand what's correct instead of studying the incorrect things that others think? Sure, it can give you an understanding of how wrong others are, but that gets you no closer to what's right. Why do you need to have an understanding of wrong things?

Is this the introduction from the "Jihadist's Guide to Home Schooling your Martyr?

If you're too thick to understand that there's a difference between being aware of different ideologies/understanding that other people believe differently than you AND wasting your time studying through the details of those ideologies, then I can't help you.

Why? To me both attempt to do thes same thing--to provide an education without exposing kids to opinions that are contrary to personal beliefs.

You do know that evolution is taught at BYU, and that a majority of the political science professors vote democrat. I've heard this idea expressed before - usualy by people who have an ax to grind, and don't mind taking liberties with facts...

This is usually the case with many criticisms of BYU. People just want to grind their axe against BYU.

I find the same true about people who defend BYU--they just want to grind their axe against anyone who criticizes BYU. So, I dismiss their argument out of hand.

Oh, I guess I missed your rebuttal. Sorry.

Or were you just referring to the 'byu teaching evolution proves it doesn't shelter kids from real world subjects' response?

So, if I know something is malnutritious or even poisonous, I should probably feed it to my kid in additional to him usual healthy fare so that I don't fail to expose him to different substances that he could imbibe....right?

We should probably start offering classes on the benefits of child molestation, pimping, and beastiality as well....heaven forbid people aren't exposed to those worldviews!

I didn't say I had made a rebuttal, but others did.

Where do you get the word "proves" from?

I feel like this thread, which addresses a potentially interesting issue, is just turning out to be a troll trap.

yes, well said. BYU shelters kids from 'poisons', just like some home schoolers are sheltered from 'poisons'.

The feeding kids poison analogy might be a bit strong as we're merely talking about exposing college students to pretty mainstream opinions. Probably more like parents not feeding kids ethnic foods because they think its weird and disgusting.

Way early in life. Dad, uncle and cousin played there. Grampa coached there. You?

Right, because drugs, immorality, homosexuality, and actively opposing the idea that there is a God aren't bad things, they're just different.

Football?

I got an academic scholarship out of California, and planned to walk-on to the wrestling team. Further "converted" during my mission.

Yep, football.

Did you end up wrestling there? Such a great sport, it's a shame it doesn't get more attention outside of the mid west.

No, this was the same time that the nationally ranked program got the ax due to Title IX. Dark days. We tried to keep a club program going, but never saw any success.

In defense of home schooling (and my family comes from a long line of public educators--my kids are in public school too), home schooling doesn't make kids weird. Weird parents make kids weird. I have known home schooling kids who were perfectly normal and publicly schooled kids who were perfectly weird. The common denominator was the parents. Weird parents=weird kids. Where they get their education has little to nothing to do with it.
