You guys think there's any way Rose would start both Carlino and Calvert at the 1 and 2?? .

Maybe at some point later in the season.

Do not see why Zylstra is starting tonight - makes our defense look like crud

Ugh...on a positive note. Looks like both Davies and Austin are starting.

Don't know what game you guys were watching but leading scorers were Haws - 22, Davies - 16/4 blocks, Zylstra - 11, Carlino - 9/10 dimes, and Sharp with 7/2 blocks. Sharp and Zylstra effectively shut down the 6-9 All-American Covington (2-12 shooting) - 9 points - averaging 17.8. In this game Sharp and Zylstra were key contributors. They understand spacing and collective team play. Austin is a foul machine and has trouble staying on the court but does bring intensity. Ambrosino is still feeling out the game and Calvert appears to have game with his 3 point stroke and assist making ability. I look for Winder to step in once his ankle heals but primarily for defending quicker guards. I believe that Rose is correct when he says he has 9 starters - it just depends on what players skill sets can be used effectively against the opposing team.

The thing about sharp is if he was 235 instead of 190 he would be an excellent defensive college 4. As it is he gets pushed under the hoop all the time.

Zylstra was his normal inconsistent self on offense but defensively he gave a great effort to keep Covington quiet.

Did you see Zylstra at the beginning of the game?? Tries to drive through like 3 guys on his way to the hole loses control and falls over. Zylstra's MO is to play well against inferior teams like Tennessee State but disappear agianst teams like Gonzaga. Lets see how he plays against a team like Notre Dame, if we play them, and then reassess. How many TO's did Carlino have?? Sharp is looking better but he'd be a beast if he was at 235. I think we should consider using Ambrosino at the 3 some times especially when we're in zone D'.

Carlino seems to still be struggling with ball control. Our offense looked much better with Calvert on the floor, although Carlino's defense is better.

Based soley on one game. Zylstra looked like the most improved on the floor. Carlino did not.

10 assists to 4 TOs is a pretty decent ratio. A couple of the TOs were avoidable, but if he could be between 2:1-3:1 Assist:TO Ratio I think we will do well. I liked that he was looking to pass first (at least until the end of the game). He did show some signs of improvement.

His stats looked pretty good and he was definitely better in the second half, but seeing him live, he was really struggling with their pressure and poking hands. He usually recovered the ball when they poked it out so it didn't show as a turnover, but it was obvious he was having trouble with the dribble under that pressure. He's definitely a competent point guard in many areas, but Calvert just handled the ball better under the same pressure.

Given his defense and experience, I'd rather have him out there than Calvert right now, but this is an area he struggled with last year and I was hoping he'd be improved this year. I guess we'll see in time.

The problem with Carlino is expectations. Some people expected Danny Ainge - out of the chutes.

He is coming along and as he improves his decision making, will be just fine.

The team lacks star power - but has a lot of players that will contribute. Young team, too.

So what happens when Winder returns? If his outside shot has improved does he start at the 2 over Zylstra? We could really use his defense on the perimeter and it would give us more depth at the 3 with Zylstra coming off the bench

Haws is the most disappointing this year as far as perimeter defense goes. His guy blew by him about 10 times against TSU when BYU was in the zone.

Calvert got trapped two times, if I recall. Had to call a time out in one of them. He appeared to handle the ball better because he then started passing it as soon as he could. He basically avoided handling it - not necessarily a bad thing but something to keep in mind. Cusick does the same thing.

If two guys are trapping you, someone's open and some easy points are potentially available. I don't get it when a guard decides to take on 2-3 guys on the long side of the timeline. Move the ball forward.
