For the record Riley has only ruined ONE season at BYU - 2012. He was a non-factor in 2010 (due to injury) and saved the season in 2011. Stating otherwise is tryinh to rewrite history.

I might disagree with this. Riley has been polarizing from the start and has caused a splinter among the team the past three years. The qb controversy never died because he was never good enough to put it to sleep, but he was good enough with grit and leadership to take out Heaps who was in front of him when he was in a slump.

I wish Riley never transferred to BYU. I honestly think the past three years would have been better. We have talent at qb that was not developed an wasted because he knew how to manipulate the coaches into liking him.

Riley should have never started at byu. he simply is not good enough to be qb at byu. we should have never put our eggs in his basket. i hope lark starts the bowl and does as well as he does in his other start. i also hope heaps does well at kansas. it will help our coaches learn from their mistakes.

Disagree all you want. The QB controversy never died because Jake Heaps played like pooh for 4 1/2 games.

The QB controversy only reared it's ugly head, because Heaps didn't play like a BYU QB. And it only came back again this year because Nelson played like pooh and the coaches didn't want to turn to the backup again.

Their record is 7-8. 11 of the games have been on the road.

That's Abysmal! ;)

He's right in the middle between abysmal and phenomenal.

Partially true. Interesting though how when riley plays like pooh over and over again he still is left in as starter. hmmmmm.

We should have been undefeated in those games. Don't you read this site and others?

Heaps made it all easy on Riley by not attending summer workouts where he could have established himself as a leader, instead the team turned to the only leader that showed up and that was Riley. If Heaps had showed up that summer, worked his tail off with his own guys instead of personal trainers the team would have gone to war for him instead of give up.

Spiffcoug, don't you find it an amazing coincidence that the 4 1/2 games that Heaps "played like pooh" happened to be the first 4 1/2 games that BD ever coordinated the offense??? Especially considering that not only Jake, but the entire offensive team played like pooh in these same games. Especially considering that every single player on the offensive team played like they had never practiced a down in their lives. Especially considering that after those first few games of the 2011 season, BM said that the offense was too complicated and that they were going to simplify it. Especially considering that even now after being OC for 20 plus games, BD is still not a great OC.

It must be simply coincidence that JH didn't play like pooh for almost a complete season the previous year under Anae, yet when the OC man changed, Jakes playing ability deteriorated even though he had another year of experience. Many have posted on here that JH was "broken". Many have also posted that BYU's offense IS "broken". Most haven't got the sense to put 2 and 2 together and figure out that Jakes play in the first part of BD's tenure in his new position was a symptom of a broken offense more than it was a symptom of Jake's being broken.

Some have posted that Riley "saved the 2011 season". Laugher. Riley played the easiest part of the 2011 season. Is there anyone else besides me who even remembers how Utah State played last year IN THE 4TH QUARTER of their games. Oh yes, they were world beaters in quarters 1 through 3 against most teams, including defending national champs Auburn at Auburn. (Did anyone else besides me watch that game?) Going into the 4th quarter USU was up by 20 or more points. And they folded. And they lost. And that would become the modus operandi for USU for the season - get a lead in the first 3 quarters and fold in the 4th. By the time of the BYU game, it was like they were following a script, and they knew that they would lose it in the 4th. Riley almost let them break out of the pattern in his last "signature drive" of his season's "signature win" with the wounded duck that McKay Jacobsen luckily got to before the two DB's that had an equal chance at it, and then the tipped pass. I have been laughing about it ever since when I look at replays of that drive either mentally or on actual replays. I actually laughed out loud when he essentially made the same kind of passes in this years OSU game without the same lucky ending, and then when the OSU pass was tipped into the endzone by our defense I was praying that one of our DB's would snag it. But when it turned out to be an instant replay of Riley's winning TD pass against USU, I laughed out loud again. I hope that doesn't turn out to be the OSU QB's signature play.

On another subject. Time and time again posters on this site have said that that Jake essentially lost his starting job because he didn't participate in summer practices in 2011. Were these official practices that he should have been required to attend, or were they organized by the players? And if so, did the fact that Jake got married in the summer of 2011 and was on his honeymoon have anything to do with his non-attendance?

On another subject - I think maybe BM has a brain tumor. Ever hear of a head coach playing his backup QB on special teams? I mean a head coach who is playing with a full deck of cards?

Look, I know that this is hard for you to grasp but here it is: I said that the Win/Loss record doesn't show that he is phenomenal. That's all I said. Fifth-winningest active head coach in the country sounds really good until you look at the teams BYU has beaten and has lost to. This year being a prime example.

Yes, so the win/loss record DOES show that he's phenomenal. The year to year schedule of who he beat might not. I know it's hard for you to grasp, but the win/loss record means just the numbers of wins and losses, and just looking at that, and comparing it to other coaches, Bronco does look phenomenal.

I'm undefeated playing basketball against my 11 yr old. That means I'm a phenomenal basketball player.

I find your obsession with calling Bronco phenomenal amusing though. Whittingham's record is only a couple of games worse than Bronco's. Is he phenomenal too?

If you compared your record only to other men who played basketball vs. their 11-year-olds and yours was the best, wouldn't someone looking at just that evidence alone think you were phenomenal compared to the competition?

I've not once called Bronco phenomenal, so how could I be obsessed with calling him that? I have merely been pointing out what you've repeatedly tried to back track and dodge, which is that you were not just mistaken, but sorely and woefully mistaken, when you said that Bronco's win/loss record showed that he was not phenomenal. That's all. I completely agree that the last several years have been mishandled, that many of the wins under him have come vs. very poor competition, and that the bungling of the Jake Heaps situation has led to QB problems and program problems for several years. What I will say, though, is that Bronco's win/loss record is one of the best, and if you're trying to use it to show his weakness, you're acting foolishly.

Yes it is an amazing coincidence. Because is/should be a better QB than he showed in those 4 1/2 games. I don't put Jake's 54% completion rate and his abysmal 97.7 PER on BD or anyone else. I put that on him and him alone. Players are responsible for their own performance.

These were throws we saw him make the season before and after he sat for a while. The plays were there to be made in all those games, and Heaps didn't make them. It's the same story this year with Riley, the plays have been there to be made. If you want to fault BD for actually believing in his QBs that they can actually make plays. But Heaps played like pooh and there is no excusing that.

I have nothing more to say than a freakin Men. Fans have no Idea on what it is like to be the head coach at BYU. Bronco is doing a phenominal job.

I don't know what phenominal means for you, but If you are referring to how he is building and molding young men to be great men, I agree completely. If you are referring to how he is doing as a HC when it comes to win/loss record, not sure that word applies.

You mean as the fifth-winningest active head coach in the country? Yeah, I'd say it does apply. If you want to quibble about who those wins were against, that's fine, but his win/loss record is pretty phenomenal.

Where are you getting your numbers? Bronco isn't even in the top 20 by either percentage or number of wins.

What am I missing here?

The inability now for at least two people to not be able to comprehend the irony, sarcasm and absurdity of what I said here is even more amusing than I originally hoped.
