Davies going out early and being in foul trouble was a big part of the loss to SMC. Some of this loss has to be put on Rose too though. He failed to make adjustments in the first half after we had a 16-point lead and we wasted it away. He went conservative with Cusick/Zylstra when having Winder out there instead would have helped dramatically. I was at the game and watched Winder and he is so much more active all around even without the ball. He's always fighting for rebounds. It didn't help that Zylstra didn't show up until like the last 5 minutes of the game. He had maybe 1 rebound up until that point. There's no point in having Cusick and Carlino on the floor at the same time anymore if Winder is ready to go and healthy. Our defense suffered without Brandon and Winder on the floor.

Wasn't Winder the guy not guarding Dellevadova when he took the inbound pass in stride?

Dude that was a half-court shot that should have never went in and it was the entire team defense that collapsed due to early celebration. Rose should have called a time-out. I'd have to go back and watch but wasn't Carlino the closest to Delladova anyways?? You can't pin a basket on Winder that never should have went in. If the team is guarding Delladova who knows if he flops and we get called for a foul.

I did not watch the game because I was driving from Las Vegas to LA area.

From the Deseret News

I read that Winder was supposed to be guarding Dellavadova. Yes - Rose should have called timeout so he coyld then be criticised for helping SMC, who had no timeouts, call a play. The real issue is SMC was already prepared with a play and BYU was not.

Winder should have been all over D so that there was no way for him to catch a pass in stride.

Sure you can, if it was his assignment to not let dellavadova get the ball. I say this knowing nothing of the scheme in place, or if there even was a defensive scheme discussed during the last time out.

I went back and watched the end of the SMC game and Winder had already got back on defense, which is what he was likely supposed to do, and picked up Delladova just past half court and there wasn't much else Winder could have done unless he were to have fouled him. Winder was in position on defense as he should have been and probably would have picked up Delladova earlier had he been instructed to do so. My guess is Rose told the team that after a make hustle back on defense which Winder had done. He even made Delladova step sideways around him during the shot and probably should have been called for a foul. If Rose wanted Delladova picked up earlier he should have instructed Winder to do so and he probably would have done it.

How do you know what instruction he received. The standard operating procedure of dropping back after a make would normally make sense, since teams do not take shots like that except when in need of a buzzer beater. If Rose did not instruct his team what to do in buzzer beating situations at the very beginning of the season - out coached. If he did, some player inexperience bit us. Maybe both

Agreed - I don't know what Rose said and that's why I said "likely...", "probably....", and "My guess....". I also agree that Rose was out coached though as we blew a 16 point lead at home.

I'm not sure out coached. Out-played? Yes, slightly, barely, and luckily. Hellavadiva hit a hellava shot, splitting two defenders on two long strides and got off a shot. Could our D been better? Yes. We don't know if Rosé had foresight and said how to play if Tyler missed or made the shot. Hopefully he did. It's not his first rodeo. I will give benefit of the doubt.

As for the 16 point lead, it was an early lead. BYU was shooting like 75% and SMc was shooting just under 20%. It's called regression to the mean. BYU, nor any team, can or will shoot 70+% for an entire game. And any good team is not going to be held under 20.

If you watched the game and saw our zone get demolished simply by a high post, yes, you know we got outcoached.

Fine, assume regression to the mean but If we play better defense and rebound the dang ball in the first half SMC isn't able to climb back into the game so fast either. Winder could have helped with both.
