trueblue72I have been thinking about this topic for a couple of days... I still can't seem to put my finger exactly what the "it" factor is that a coach must have, but when you find a coach with it, you know he has it. It's a given they need to have position knowledge and game knowledge, but there is an "it" factor that some coaches have and some don't.
Urban Meyer is a jerk and I would never want my kid to play for him aftering hearing some of his former players tell stories about him, but the guy has "it" he gets results.
When I was playing in college our head coach could yell and scream and carry on like a jackass and it never motivated us players just annoyed us to death. Our O-coordinator was someone who commanded our respect, when he spoke we listened, we did what he said and we did it with every bit of strength we had.
It reminds me of a game my freshman year, we were getting smoked 34-6 at the half, we went in the locker room and the HC just laid into us, it didn't do anything but annoy us. When the OC stood up and let us have it, it was different feeling, it inspired us. We went out in the 2nd half and ended up losing 56-50 on a fumble by our QB at the goal line. We still lost but we played our guts out when the OC spoke.
After I left the school the OC became and lead the team to its first national ranking in 20 years, I think the ability to inspire and get more out of your players than anyone else would is what makes a great coach.
