Sounds to me that his Bishop was saying that Manti would have been eligible to be a BYU student for about 6 months of his 4 years at college....Not a big suprise

Yep, that's what I got out of it.

1) Looks like Bronco called it right re: HC

2) This bishop will be released in the next couple of months

3) Manti still lied about it after he allegedly found out it was fake.

4) All the bishop knows is (i) Manti told me the same thing he told ESPN and ABC, and (ii) he had phone conversations with the digital girl. It's not like no one has ever deceived a bishop or anything. The only new information is that Manti was having other issues that the bishop was helping him with, which probably isn't what the Te'o camp was going for when they asked (at least I hope they asked) the bishop to speak.

The only vindication in this interview (which is kind of creepy) is for Bronco rescinding that scholarship offer.

There still hasn't be a single attempt to explain why the Te'o family all lied about the digital girl visiting them in Hawai'i with Manti---that's not just Manti saving face, that's the whole family lying about it nearly 2 months before the gig was allegedly up.

I find it weird and inappropriate for a Bishop to comment/give an interview on the matter.

I'm simply astounded.

I wonder who put the Bishop up to the interview? He certainly wouldn't be saying any of this without Manti's permission to share things discussed between him and clergy. And was it me or was the Bishop saying the reason he was succeptible to being deceived was because he was trying to live church teachings? It all sounds a little screwy to me. It wouldn't surprise me to have some church leadership (at the Stake or regional level) wondering why the Bishop is discussing confidential conversations and interactions with a newpaper.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's sooner than that. I know his purpose was to bail Manti out a bit, but instead I think he drags Manti (and the church!) a bit further in the mud. Definitely not okay for a bishop to do.

Yep. Any comment from the Bishop should have been: All my conversations with Manti are private. I have a positive relationship with Manti. I have no comment to make on this matter. Please refer all you questions to Manti Teo and his family. Thank you. Have a good day.

Well, he did get a chance to talk to Katie Couric, how many church missionaries get a chance to do that?

Gotta agree that the Bishop was WAAAAAAY out of line here. Not cool at all.

The Stake or Region will be on this like a fly on stink.

I'd never even entertain the idea of answering media questions as a bishop. Especially for a subject this volatile.

We do learn from a reliable source that other people talked to the girl. And that's where I'm still confused: Who was the voice? We know the mastermind, we know the twin brother and the niece. We know the face. But who was the voice? Who was spending hours and hours on the phone with Teo? Was it the dude masterminding this thing, pretending to be a girl? That's bizarre in itself.

I tend to believe the Bishop's version of the story--that Manti was duped and lied once he found out because he felt so stupid. He's a kid, and as a kid, I'm pretty sure I'd have done the same thing.

And the Bishop saying he recommitted and was coming back is really no big deal. Any of the other grad students or other members of that ward would have confirmed the same thing. Silver lining in this is it got Manti to start having some much-needed conversations with his Bishop. That's a real positive. Especially before he heads into the morally-stripped world of pro sports.

Still doesn't address it. Manti's dad (Brian) was the one saying in October she would visit the family in Hawai'i with Manti. So he lied to his Dad--why did he AND dad lie about visits with her in Hawai'i???

He was recommitted to LDS principles.

"We teach our kids to be honest, to be trusting, to be caring," Carrier said. "Manti was having his heartstrings pulled. He's a great kid and he was just trying to do what was right.

This part actually really bothers me. What lessons have I missed where LDS people are taught to be "trusting" in people who you never meet? He was duped before this alleged recommitment to LDS principles took place and was duped and/or dishonest about it after this alleged change. The Bishop seems to be saying that it was the church's teachings that got him in trouble. But I don't believe that for a second.

Wow...this bishop has some loose lips.

Either he was put up to the interview or he doesn't understand confidentiality. Maybe he thought he'd be doing Te'o a favor, I don't know.

If they said the dad/family met with her, then I'd agree that that hasn't been explained. But there's this:

"South Bend Tribune sportswriter Eric Hansen told WSBT-TV on Friday that he still has the recording of the interview with Te'o's father Brian and mother Ottilia and listened to it again to make sure he didn't misquote the father.

" 'They met at Stanford his freshman year, they shook hands,' Hansen said, according to WSBT-TV, of what Brian Te'o said. 'This was an in-person meeting and there were subsequent meetings in Hawaii when Manti would go home. Again, from listening to the tape, I don't think Brian ever saw her or met her.' "

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8856519/manti-teo-talked-girlfriend-knowing-hoax" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you have a link to indicate that Brian lied, I'd be interested to see it. As far as I know Manti is the only member of the family who is known to have lied.

According to the bishop, he was the first one Manti told after finding out about the hoax. So this was either on or after Dec 6 - if Manti's timeline is to be believed. Did he call the bishop before or after he began to lie about the relationship on Dec 8 - again, if we believe he was duped, he was only duped up to Dec 6, because everything he said after that was a lie.

So if he told the bishop and asked what to do, I can't believe the bishop advised him to lie about it. I have to imagine the advise to tell the truth was what was given.

I think Manti knew about the hoax LONG before he is claiming he did. He has been lying about this situation almost the entire time. One of the least credible people in this story is Manti. He is being completely dishonest and nothing he says can be believed.
