Wow...this bishop has some loose lips.

Either he was put up to the interview or he doesn't understand confidentiality. Maybe he thought he'd be doing Te'o a favor, I don't know.

I respect, and feel bad for Bishops; so much responsibility, and so little instruction about actual counseling, especially east of Utah. This guy just got hung out to dry by his own ignorance?

or desire to be:

A positive influence?

Liked?

Visible?

A jerk played a hoax on TEO

TEO handled it poorly embellishing the story and tellung untruths - flamed and skewered

ND AD makes imperfect statement - flamed

Bishop makes statement - flamed and possibly about to be skewered

By self righreous people hiding behind internet names reading more than what is actually said - embellishing themselves - and for what purpose

Meanwhile the jerk behind the hoax - almost forgotten

Sorry - in this hypicritical world that seems to be hiw things work

Tell me, would you be happy if your bishop talked to the media and said what this one did? Regardless as to whether you did anything wrong? If you were his Stake Pres., would you be happy with how that Bishop handled it?

I certainly wouldn't.

I do think he did it with the best intent. We all need to keep in mind any calling in the church is volunteer work. That said, there is a lot of faith and trust put in meeting with a bishop over private matters.

Bishops should be checking with their leaders before doing anything like this interview. I KNOW they cover things like this in the communications and training for leaders. And I'd be shocked if the church leaders had no issue with the details released. How anxious would any of the kids in his ward be now to come and discuss their life, issues, or challenges with him--knowing he apparently has no problem putting his name and face online talking about the stuff they discussed? If more bishops tossed confidentiality to the wind I'd be less likely to want to meet with mine to talk about any kind of sensitive issue.

I sympathize with Manti to an extend but can't help but feel he made his siutation tons worse with the way he handled it (by lying). As high as the good publicity was during the deception, the lows when you are exposed are as deep. Ask any number of publicly visible examples these days.

Well that would depend on whether I asked him to or authorized him to do it and several other things that none of us can possibly know. Probably he handled it poorly. I just find it interesting that everyone wants to skewer a guy that carries tremendous responsibility in his spare time without being paid to do it and people like you are more focused on his imperfection as he tried to do the right thing than you are about the imperfections of the guy who intentionally did the wrong thing.

I'm not fooled. Everything was clear once I realized that it was Sister Kekua's bishop who was speaking in the interview. I understand why Manti would have been speaking often with him...

The only vindication in this interview (which is kind of creepy) is for Bronco rescinding that scholarship offer.

Did Bronco rescind it after Manti announced he was going to ND? Because

It's pretty clear they were recruiting him hard all the way up to that point.

Hole - let me help. Nobody knows. Not you. Not me.

If I had to GUESS based on patterns of previous behavior, I would guess that Teo was being offered the KVN deal right up until the very end.

But IDK. Because IDK what, if any, indiscretions Teo committed. I really do not. I know people that knew Teo at Punahou at the time. I heard various opinions about his character. But IDK. Neither do you.

Nope. Not one bit. It was not the Bishop's place to reveal any conversations or contacts that he had with Manti. The Bishop made a mis-step. Not good.

From my perspective, I think TEO asked his Bishop to confirm he had talked to someone on the phone, but he probably got a little caught up in the interview and said more than he should have. I would imagine he talked to the Church Public Affairs before doing the interview, as that is Bishoping 101. I doubt the Stake President is going to release him for what was said--unless he has a real stickler for a Stake President. We all make mistakes. Some of you on here think that Bishops should be symbols of perfection. We are, just like everyone else, imperfect people who have been called to do a very difficult duty. We are not mental health or marriage counselors--something I remind my ward members often. Let's give this Bishop a little credit for seeking out a lost sheep and trying to help him back on the path--which apparently is what he did, his imperfect recitation of the events notwithstanding.

A KVN deal makes no sense to me as they are such different offenses. Also, if Bronco viewed drinking as out for a year infraction, why weren't the player/hosts (who unlike Manti had signed the honor code) of the alledged booze party subject to any noticeable punishments? Finally, Doman wouldn't fly all the way to Hawaii a week before signing day and then be extremely disappointed in losing Te'o if they weren't offering him a scholarship.

Actually, one of the player/hosts, Siloah Teo was dismissed from the team.

You do not know who did or did not do what when Teo came. You may recall his cousin later got booted for a DUI.

You also do not know what trips Doman made or didvnot make or the purpose ofvthem or the level of his disappointment.

I do know this. If I was expecting to land the top linebacker in the country, I would nit send the OC. And if there were sensitivities involved - even moreso. HC would go with a position coach or DC in tow.

That was for a later DUI, not for partying with Manti.

It's so cute to watch the troll troll. First he cries about Bronco not rescinding Teo's offer when he thinks Teo is actually a good person, now he cries about BYU continuing to recruit him after his scholarship offer was pulled.

Everything that's ever gone wrong is Bronco's fault, everything that's ever gone right is a lucky accident.

Why can't this imaginary thread and all other threads related to Manti Teo just die?

The dude is a liar and is about as sophisticated as many of the troubled, lying, narcisistic, "i could never get caught" teens that I have worked with in treatment over the years.

Actually I been perfectly consistent. I never cried about Bronco pulling his offer as I've never thought bronco pulled his offer. It's equally cute watching some make up their own narrative, and then continue to state it as fact despite all evidence and reason to the contrary.

I thought it was from a DUI from that night of the visit. I could be wrong. I had also heard that Bronco asked Shiloah if he had been drinking that night as well and told Bronco no. He was dismissed for lying to Bronco as much as anything.

And yes, we're the only ones who "continue to state" facts "despite all evidence and reason to the contrary."

Yep. Manti is still not being honest about the situation. He is continuing to lie about it. He has yet to be fully truthful about what happened and when he knew what was happening.

All we know is that Manti is a liar and has been caught in a stupid lie.
