Ah, the strawman, well done. Did you expect us to get blown away by the same team that St. Mary's played tight the entire game?

Ah, the uninformed poster who enjoys bashing other posters with misinformation. St. Mary's played Gonzaga "tight the entire game"? It was 46-28 Gonzaga at the half (BYU was down 40-21 at the half). Gonzaga led St. Mary's by as many as 20 early in the second half before St. Mary's made their run to make the game close (which should surprise nobody who has watched Dellavodova and company). Geez, maybe Few and Gonzaga learned something from that game and were bound and determined that it wasn't going to happen again. Now in your defense, you have made it clear that the football board is your area of "fan expertise" and not the basketball board. Just don't make it so obvious next time ;) . BTW Gunk, excellent post and spot on IMO :) GO COUGARS!

My bad, played them in a close game and/or played them close when it mattered. Take your pick.

The truth is that this team just confirmed what many of us suspected: They can't keep up with teams that are actually good. Even if we EXPECTED them to get blown out, we hoped they wouldn't. It's not about our expectations, it's about who this team actually is.

We lose to a top ten team at their place and we've now written off the season? I guess you sad sacks can get ready for baseball. Lots of BB left to be played for the rest of us. We have weaknesses and when your big guns misfire, hard to win. But that does not make us NCAA unworthy. Why are fans so ready to give up on a team or a season because of one bad loss and one heartbreak loss?

Yes, we're sad sacks because we realize this team is not a tourney team. Oh brother

BYU may still beat SMC and Gonzaga. BYU is still in control of their destiny. I think BYU fan overreaction, generally reserved for the football forum, is spilling over into what is generally a pretty level headed forum. I was hoping for the opposite (level-headedness of basketball forum overcoming the overreaction of football forum).

Yes they might. Maybe both. SMC a very decent chance. Beating SMC would be a pleasant surprise. Beating Zags would be a shockingly pleasant one.

Since I expect neither of these things to happen, I have left room for some serious celebration if either or both happen.

The poor saps that expect it to happen will at best have their expectations met but more likely are setting themselves up for the big crash when it does not.

I think is better to say most of us don't have a lot of hope that we can make the NCAA's. But we still get at least one more chance at SMU and Gonzaga. And we could always just win the conference tourney.

Beginning to think one of the worst things to happen to BYU basketball was Jimmer. Suddenly, unless you're putting up 25+ points a night you're not a "good" player.

So let me get this straight: You would be okay to not have had Jimmer so that this team looks better in comparison? Hmmm, I think someone has gone off the deep end here a little.

Speaking only for myself, I don't think this team is terrible, just not that good. It's really okay to accept that fact. We don't have to hate BYU to look at this team that way. We won't make the NCAA tournament this year. That's okay too. I just find it fascinating that some can't handle when others say this team isn't that good.

No one insulted your mother, you need to back away from the emotion a little.

I would not put money on this team not going to the tournament.

I would put money on this team going to the tournament. i don't think they will win anything more than a play in game though. 1st rd exit for sure, (unless Davies discovers that he actually is a man, and that a forearm shiver doesn't need to throw off a whole night of bball)

If we do make it I think our only chance is hoping that nobody watched film on how to stop Haws, which is to mug him endlessly. If our opponent doesn't have the smarts to pull that off we actually might have a chance.

This team is not much better or worse than last year's team. And might finish with a better WCC record.

I think that's more a testament to the WCC being worse this year than this BYU team being as good as last year.

Statistically, the last 2 BYU basketball teams are nearly identical in almost every category.

As far as the WCC goes, here are last year's Top 4 RPIs:

25- Gonzaga

28- St. Mary's

46- BYU

117- LMU

This year's:

8- Gonzaga

39- BYU

57- SMC

87- Santa Clara

So it's nearly a wash there too.

Mars is right. The team last year was not much different. Neither team was great. Both are decent. Almost good. BYU basketball was up at the end of Jimmermania and dropped wven lower than pre Jimmermania after that. The loss of Dave Rice probably factors in.

This team needs our support. Watch them and enjoy them. Some will be gone soon.

They will be if Carlino and Davies can continue with the intensity of tonight's game. Haws is already there. If those 3 can keep this up and others step up (like Sharp tonight) as well, these guys could surprise a lot of WCC and BYU people.

Carlino has certainly become more consistent in WCC play. How this team pkays on the toad is still an issue and vs goodcteams is as well. They have the opportunity ahead to rise up and address bith of thosec issues.

Fun game to watch tonight.

Bib, there's no thread or comment on the game except yours. Can you give us more?

I missed the first half due to my wife insisting that I alliw her to control me a bit after I just got back from yet another long road trip. But when the movie ended and tweets indicated BYU with about a 1 point half-time lead, I was allowed to watch the 2nd half.

Carlino was on fire. He got about 28 points and some steals. He had a 3 pointer anulled by a BYU foul away from the action and another changed to a 2 after video review. He was taken out in rhe lop-sided win with 3 minutes left. Otherwise, he easily would have had a new career high. It was a season high.

Davies played well and scored about 20. Strong rebounding. Horrible free throw shooting.

Haws scored about 22 to 24. He shot well.

Sharp pkayed very well. Scored and rebounded well.

That was almost all of our offense. Zylstra got a nice 3 late.

Fun game.

Same old story -- bad first half, good second half. It gets us the win vs teams like these, but it does us nothing vs good opponents.

Bad first half?? Maybe our defense but that's it
