And by saying he'll be close to Davies (within 20%) you're then saying that he will be the best offensive freshman ever at BYU.

So I'm saying it. He will be (barring injury or something weird.)

As a starter, IN THE SAME OFFENSIVE SET/GAMEPLAN I think he would be close to Davies, if not better. Just because he is aggressive. Davies is not. Davies is downy soft on offense and defense. When you have 6'1" guards walking right in front of you and grabbing offensive rebounds, you must be.

Davies spends the majority of his time on the offense in the 15 feet and above area (instead of getting position down low)

He was getting "fronted" repeatedly (guarding by your player in the front to deny the pass) by I think it was SMU, and was still posting in the 13 foot range. How is it possible that you are getting fronted and still end up that deep? Because you aren't aggressive...

If and when I get fronted in basketball (I'm only 6'3 so it doesn't happen that much :) ) I take my guy and plant my feet 5 feet away from the hoop and wait for the lob.

I don't think anyone is saying Mika isn't going to be good. Just why hype some one up so much that there are unrealistic expectations on them. And then when they fail to meet those expectations they get thrown under the bus by all the fans that created those expectation. Lets at least wait until we see him against D1 talent and 1 or 2 games is not enough of a sample. If he does have Davies numbers from this year enjoy him for that year cause he may be gone to the NBA. Davies is the best big man we have had for a LONG time by the stats. I think he was ranked in the top 30 big men coming into the season by espn and was the pre-season favorite for player of the year in the WCC. That would be pretty impressive as a Freshman! Wrubell said the other night he is on pace to be the first player ever to end in the all time top 10 in points, rebounds, blocks and top 25 in assists and steals at BYU. To me that is pretty impressive. I wish we could chart where his shots came from, I doubt he has attempted more than 10 % of his shots outside of 12 feet.

I am amazed at the hype surrounding these three. They are all very, very good right now but I have seen so many players from high school head into D1 competition and never amount to what they were expected to become.

I love that they are all coming to BYU and the future is pretty exciting for BYU basketball, but I will be beyond shocked if they all live up to the hype.

With missions and redshirt years ahead, I don't believe BYU will be in the final four with these three. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see it.

Mika is light years better than Davies right now, his skills are better, his defense is better, his shooting is better--and he doesn't play dumb like Davies does. Talking about Davies as one of the BYU greats is absurd, he's a poor basketball player, but all we have this year. I hope Davies gets his degree because he sure isn't going to play basketball anymore after this year.

And I'm not sure Austin is going to be any better either. He was awful against the worst team in the conference, and I'm not sure he knows what he's doing out there. He's supposed to be a shooter, but I haven't seen him make anything but a layup this year.

Even I will admit that Mika is not better than Davies t this moment. But after one year, Mika would equal Davies over a season. Davies had some big scoring games. But inconceivably he had anther very typical and below average game vs one of the worst WCC teams. It's too bad.

Ironically, if Mika played at BYU this year, he and Davies would have been a great tandem. It's very telling that Smash Bronson was the most valuable 4 in the last part of the season.

I can agree with this. One advantage I think Mika will have is agression on the defensive glass. Rebounding is all about effort and positioning. Mika will be very good at both early in his career, I think.

Neither of which Davies has (effort on the D glass, positioning). He shows flashes of it when he has given up game changing putbacks by shooting guards (and been yelled at by Rose during a timeout for it) THEN he comes out and monsters the next 3 or 4 rebounds to go up into the air.

Davies is either not a smart enough player to remember to keep doing that, or simply doesn't make the effort to do so, relying on vertical leaping instead of position and boxing out . As a Senior playing, I think it is the latter. And that is a sad thing to get from your undisputed captain.

I think any big guy with talent and half of a brain will make a solid push for Brandon's numbers, and if he is the "go to guy" in the offense, he will make it with ease. Mika is the first in a long line of many.

Two slight differences.

I think Davies has the smarts, I think he lacks the mental focus and or discipline. Hate to bash on the guy. But he does show waves of really solid play, just does it verses the smaller guys in the WCC. He is still going to get All-Conference, so kudos to him. But that's part of the problem, he seems to play like he knows he is all-conference, all-that, and he mentally fades.

Second, please explain how Mika is part of a long line of, what? Big men at BYU who actually have size, smarts, athleticism, and game? I'm not swing he's all-world. Bt I'm also saying he is atypical big man when compared to the Austin, Harward, types.

I think Davies has been hurt because without a fellow and consistent post presence on offense and defense, there is no one to cover those lapses in concentration.

I'm sure Hartsock and Davies were both able to cover for each other. This year, Davies doesn't have that. Just like, if Hartsock were the one still year, he would probably struggle in a similar fashion to a certain extent.

Davies, like Haws is a role, complimentary player. Not a focus. But due to no one stepping up in the post alongside him, he's struggled at key moments in key games.
C
Cougs_Rule
I agree in Haws. He would be the ultimate roll player because he is so potent. But as Ds have bullied him around particularly in the absence of consistent outside shooting and BD not garnering as much attention as he should in the post, the mid range game is more easily defended. We were very close to a better year. If Carlino had kept up his outside shooting that would have freed up BD and TH. it was a good option, until it wasn't.

Haws probably has to switch to the two or bulk up 20 pounds to be the man. Taking nothing away. He is a great player.

I agree here with Spiff, which is why I wished Davies had another year with Mika. That would be a great athletic presence on offense and defense.

This shows complete ignorance. Austin is a "big" man that runs well and "shoots the 3", just as Rose recruited him to be. He was a 2 star recruit (arguably a 3 star, but he early commited to BYU and that drops you a rating). Mika is the 30th best player in the nation, according to ESPN.com The 3rd best player at his position, 6th best in his region, and the best in the state. He is a 4*, and without an early commit to BYU, again would have boosted him up to higher platitudes than this.

The guy averaged 16 points 18.5 rebounds in 5A STATE PLAYOFF and that includes sitting out every 4th quarter of that entire stretch, with 15+ point leads. He is the best basketball player on the best team in the nation. If High School had an MVP, he would be the front runner for it.

I am not saying this to pump him up. I have every reason to believe that he will have his stumbles along the way as he adjusts to higher level basketball. But, to compare Mika to Austin is laughable. Austin, unfortunately, can't even blow his nose without tripping.

THINK: Keena Young only 6'10 (and possibly still growing) instead of 6'6" . (If you are old enough to even remember him.} *That* is who is coming to BYU.

Easy does it Blue. You're pickin a fight with the wrong feller. Clearly you have not been paying attention to my props to Mika, LP, etc, etc. over the past several weeks.

Similarly, you glossed right over my putting Austin and Harward in a category not worthy of Mika. I like Austin's hustle but BYU would be in big trouble if he and Ian were our starting bigs next year. Austin has gotten man handled in WCC play. He needs another 20/30 pounds of muscle and a back to the basket game before he can man up and play Big ball or otherwise be relegated to jackin three balls. I don't care what he was recruited for, it wasn't as a traditional big and it has shown all year.

Easy brother, we're on the same team here. I was just asking you to clarify in your previous post how you justify putting Austin in the same category as Mika.

And for the record, you might be guilty of elevating expectations by saying that Mika has as good of a shot away from the basket as Keena Young.

Mika's game is 10 feet and in, and that is just perfect.

Not picking a fight. Sorry if it sounded strong. In rereading it (I put it together hurriedly) I might have put it too strongly, and that was not my intent. No fight picking intended.

You will notice that I said that Mika will be the *first* in a long line of BYU bigs... as more will come here after the success that Mika will have. I think that we agree, and are just on the wrong page. Sorry if there is any harm done, not intended.

Thanks. I hope you are right about a long line of Mikas. I considered for a moment that you may be meaning that Mika was the first of others to come, but other than Worthington it doesn't seem there are others like him. Am I missing something about the incoming recruits? Seems like Nielson is more like the Harward type. Maybe I'm wrong,

Rose regularly gets top LDS recruits, and with the success of Mika that should transition to getting a better and more guaranteed selection of the top shelf LDS big men. I don't know of any others like him. I *do* know that we get Mika for probably at least 2 years, and that will help our "big man" stock.

What top shelf LDS big men is Rosé not getting? Miss on Jabari, it that's a total anomaly.

Otherwise the Harward, Austin, Nielson's of the world are the ceiling. Mika, as you state, is pretty much it, with no "others like him."

Hartsock should be good, but not as good of a big man as Older brother, iirc. Worthington should be good at the four as well. But the LDS hoops world is not cranking out quality fives.

Sorry if I missed the explanation before, but what's with the accent mark in "Rosé"?
C

Sorry. I'm not smarter than my iPad. I don't know how that got on there or how to get it off and probably don't care to find out, unless someone knows Off hand. Probably some sticky key thing.

I assure you, I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing because I always wondered why you always took the time to add the accent mark to Rose's name.
