Sorry. I'm not smarter than my iPad. I don't know how that got on there or how to get it off and probably don't care to find out, unless someone knows Off hand. Probably some sticky key thing.

I assure you, I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing because I always wondered why you always took the time to add the accent mark to Rose's name.

Probably a bad sign, as in, you have come to know that my sarcasm has no bounds, and so you just assumed as much. Or maybe bronco-esque, you thought it was according to "level of education" ;-)

Jordan Loveridge?

I'm not dissing on Rose for that, Loveridge just made a bad choice on that one. But once Mika comes in and makes an immediate splash, and the others look up north to see a highly rated big guy drowning in a see of red, they will make the easy choice.

Loveridge will be a big thorn in BYUs side for four years. Bt what could Rose do? He had CC and SR and NA. The cupboard seemed full on paper. JL wanted to play right away. And he got his wish, just that it ended up in the cellar of the PAC.

Don't you mean three years (at most) his 14 point, zero rebound effort against us this year wasn't much of a "thorn"... I mean, when you are a forward, and are being outrebounded by both Anson Winder AND Raul Delgado, you're not really pulling your weight...

Good point. But better offensively.

Sorry, but Mika is as talented as any of those guys offensively.

Freshmen who have averaged 7 rebounds per game under Rose:

None

Players who have averaged 7 rebouds:

Brandon Davies 12-13: 7.7

Brandon Davies 11-12: 7.7

Jonathan Tavernari 08-09: 7.2

Trent Plaisted 07-08: 7.7

So basically Mika is going to come in and be one of the best freshmen under Rose and one of the best rebounds as well?

Please. I'll be happy if he gives us 5 and 5.

So, Spiff, you. Must be pretty darn happy so far?

I'm not trying to prop Mika inordinately, just saying he is a significant force and had he not been impailed, BYU probably takes ISU. He has to stay out of foul trouble, but as he continues to improve, the outside shooting options will keep getting better AND he will be a "go to" option when our perimeter guys have gone cold.

Back to OP. Mika is off to a great start. Mika has a substantially better surrounding cast than Davies enjoyed.

Davies went to the NBA after last year. Davies is getting PT in the NBA.

Mika will not be going to the NBA after this year.

Mika is exceeding my 1st year expectations partly because he has such a strong set of teammates - no major liabilities - and because he is a very good player growing up fast.

Mika is performing very well.

Key difference, though, between Davies and Mika is Davies created his shots. Davies had a repertoire of low post moves. You could feed him the ball and watch him go to work, even against double teams. Mika benefits a lot from the attention on the perimeter. He gets down court, rotates well and find himself in position for easy buckets. Very valuable but not the same as Davies did.

Mika is a special talent. He'll get there and be tons better by the end of season. Looking forward to watching it.

Mika has been better offensively than I thought he would be. He does need to figure out to be consistent, not even from game to game but from half to half.

Last two games (Iowa St & Texas), he scored 17 and 15 points, but I believe he scored 12 in each first half. So he needs to start producing in the 2nd half. Against Iowa St he had eight reboundsin the first half, but only finished with nine.

He's been very good, but still has work to do. Let's see how he does going forward as teams get more film on him.

My comments were made in February, without the benefit of seeing him at this level. I've always retained the right to change my opinions as I'm presented with new data.

I pegged him last Feb as likely being good for 8 pts and 5 rebs. Right now he's at 13.7 and 5.3.

Well I was wrong about Mika's rebounding prowess. He plays the boards a little soft in my opinion. However, his offensive game is coming along nicely. And until I saw him finally go to his left last night (even though he missed after a good pump fake) I never thought he'd be a real threat in the half court game.

Keep working on that post move and we have a legit low post scorer for the tourney.

Sorry Spiff, not allowed to change your opinion. Not unless of course you throw yourself onto a pile of hot coals, admitting you were wrong and proclaiming the superiority of those that "got it right."

Hopefully you don't have to change your opinion again once we get more than a handful of games into the season. You may suffer from a lot of burns as the season goes along.

Freshman Davies was hardly seasoned and it might be argued that he played entirely out of position his entire career at BYU (considering Philly is playing him at the 3, I'd imagine he could have played the 4 for us if we had a 5 ... which we have not)

Freshman Davies was also not the #3 prep center in the country.

I think the more fair question is jr. and sr. Davies against frosh. Mika and who's more valuable right now. If you bring potential into the argument, I think the point is moot.... but I told blueisbetter and others that I also thought Davies would get a taste in the NBA, so he's certainly not chopped liver.... possibly not as productive a college player as he could have been (we rarely get those guys that elevate their games AFTER college... ).

I always wanted Davies at the four and Austin at the five. We just apparently didn't have the personnel to make it happen, as Austin starts now next to Mika, most likely because we have a little more depth than we have had in years past.

Yep, can you imagine if we had Hartsock or Davies at the 4 with Mika at the 5 and Austin off the bench?

This team would be final four bound... that's how close we are and yet how far away we are (Ambrosino was a big miss.... sad, he had a few tools, but his weaknesses were just too much). (1 player in hoops can help so much with depth, particularly if they can play multiple positions).

I think that's why we're all so giddy about the future... it's depth up and down the roster

Austin gets pushed around too much at the 5, which is why we saw Davies play it.

Austin also doesn't have the back-to-the-basket tools Davies had.

I like Austin, he's rebounding great this season, but he is more of a tall shooting forward than a center.

freshman and soph Austin spent more time on the ground than standing up... I like this current Austin and I'm happy he's progressing.. we will need him badly next year but our guard line is going to be insanely experienced and seasoned next year.

We can put carlino, haws, bartley, collinsworth and austin on the court at the same time one year from now and those 4 will be DEADLY.(bartley has a ridiculously high ceiling and tremendous hoops IQ... it's a sneaky kind of hoops IQ, but he's a baller.. not just an athlete that plays basketball... he is very very raw but his potential is crazy).. if austin is even serviceable as a 5. No one is returning the kind of 1-3 depth that we have and will have for next year (to include winder, halford, fischer, chatman.) But we will have to run and run and run and run because we're going to have issues in the paint next season unless Austin continues his transformation as a stand up big man.
