There's only one player I'd demand to have back next year: Haws.

Carlino can return but the dude needs to work on his mental game hardcore. Right before the half we had a chance to cut the lead to 4 and get a nice run going and he, completely unguarded throws the ball 10 feet over everyone's head and out of bounds. Like I have said before, he has physical tools, and in low pressure games he has shown them, but add in any kind of pressure and he gets frantic and out of control and costs us valuable possessions.

I think if he has the humility to sit down and work with Haws on the mental aspect of the game all summer he'll be a much improved player next year.

That was Calvert. He was throwing to Carlino. We need Carlino next year, and it will be good to have him be "the man" at point and not have Cusick on the bench waiting to take minutes from him to go stand in the corner and wait for a 3.

You're right, that was. The one with Carlino happened a few minutes before and was a bad pass to Austin that went out of bounds because Carlino had gotten into poor position and out of control.

Correct. It is too bad that Calvert is going on a mission. I really enjoyed the two of them out there at the same time. The two had a fiery offensive spark, and it definitely changed the game having them both in there together (as opposed to Cusick or Zylstra at the 2 guard... bleh.)

No one looked good in that game, not a coach, not a player. No one. Carlino struggled pretty badly, with several completely unforced turnovers and bad shots. I honestly don't believe anyone who understands basketball could argue that anyone on the roster played a good game last night.

Correct. Davies, Haws and Carlino all played a great second half, but no one looked good in the 1st half. To go into it down by only 7 was practically a godsend. BYU played nearly well enough to overcome it, but were slowed down by the dragging feet of Zylstra and Cusick on defense.

I said it in this thread: There isn't a senior on the team that I would want back for one more year, including Davies. I am tired of watching 6'3 guards step in front of him and get offensive rebounds for putbacks and/or fouls.

If he could figure out a way to give effort for 35 minutes a night and play somewhat smart he would be a special player at the college level. He doesn't and won't, so he isn't. Hartsock would have done more with this years' team than Davies has, in his place.

Having watched the replay I can see how Cusick and Zylstra bad defense lost it at the end. But like the great Hawkwing said the first half was awful. Carlino needs to get over his head issues and maybe just maybe we will have a force down low who knows that posting up 12 feet from the basket is not posting up! Davies looked good when he went to the rack but 12-15 fade aways from our big is not going to win us very many games. Haws played through what was obviously a hard night. I wish we had 3 Ty's on the roster. Two will work pretty good 3 years from now. Gonna be a tough row to hoe the next couple years.

Our backcourt and wings tend to struggle with quick, athletic players both on offense and defense. Don't see things changing in the NIT.

SD absolutely doesn't fear us. They beat us 2-3 times this year, and I believe there are other teams (LMU, Santa Clara, USF, etc.) that know if they get physical with us, they can take us out of our game, and win.

This team needs a total overhaul and getting players who are athletic, commitment to defense, have no problem being leaders, have a killer mentality, minimize turnovers, and hate to lose. When did this personality change - seems like after N. Harstock and Charles A. graduated.

Agree that a tougher mentality is needed by the players but I think Rose needs to change a couple of his coaches to help in that aspect as well

Whoever we play in the NIT will also be much more athletic and disciplined than we are. Mark it. We have a bunch of 3rd-line "IF" players. If Zylstra, Cusick, Haws, or Carlino are wide open they might do something. If not, they are incapable of producing. And our vanilla half-court set does not make room for dribble penetration which is why we have major scoring droughts and have zero shot at beating a good team.

Play Winder and Calvert as much as possible. I don't care if they make mistakes--they are aggressive and bring athleticism to the game--Jimmer was the same raw player as a Sophomore. Eventually these types of players will work out the kinks and become ballers--something we don't have right now.

As much as I ragged on BYU vs SD, the Toreros almost beat SM last night taking them to OT before losing 69-66. Johnny Dee had another good game (18 points) while Delly played miserably but won the game for them at the end. Perhaps, BYU can up their game (eliminate turnovers, and play feisty like SD), and get a deep run into the NIT. Would like to see SD in there as well as they clearly were a much improved team the last half of the season.
