I wonder what made Dave Rose finally go back to run and gun the second half. We should have playing that way the whole year.

I don't understand why it took that long, honestly. You recruit all your guys to run and gun (athletic bigs, everyone shooters, no real defensive prowess anywhere at any position) and you go away from it the entire season? It never made sense to settle for our super sucky, no plays and no movement half court offense, this year.

I am glad we are back to playing BYU basketball, and I hope it lasts. It's about damn time. :D

We did get out an run the floor last night in the second half.

I think a lot of that had to do with Rose as well as who we had on the court. Cusick hardly touched the floor the 2nd half. He just can't push the ball like Carlino can. Calvert might be able to. But again, Carlino dished out more than 9 assists in the second half, many of which were down court passes. A lot of this had to do with Haws and Davies getting down the court and Carlino's passing ability.

If Carlino can do what he did in the 2nd half all next season and Rose puts players on the court that can/do get down court we'll be competitive.

I would love to see Carlino play full games like he did in the 2nd half. He looked like a completely different player from the first half. It's an amazing game to watch when he clicks on for a half. Can't wait for that consistency to be there all game, every game.

We started running. That was the difference. Car lino is steve Nash In training. We have been playing a non offensive half court suckfest the whole year.

We got Back to what makes us good and competitive and actually recruit for, and almost everyone involved looked good. Its not surprising or unexpected. We stop playing cusick (at the Point at least) get rebounds, and run, And that is the kind of game you can expect.

We started running because Carlino stopped turning the ball over and started completing his passes. Davies also pulled out of his first half funk and started playing well in the 2nd half which obviously also helped Carlino.

Congrats on the win enjoyed switching back and forth between the BYU and SMC games. As I posted in a previous thread the Huskies like to play rat ball and are more than happy to run up and down the court. They can play "D" but aren't known for it they would rather try and outscore their opponent.

Haws was outstanding and your team was into the game. Carlino was well Carlino and your coach putting him on the bench seemed to make him recognize he needed to play under control and let the game come to him.

Hope you guys can win the whole shebang. Good luck.

There's some truth to this. Carlino attempted multiple down court passes in the 1st half, but they pretty much all ended up as turnovers.

But I do think our guys put some more effort to running in the 2nd half and getting down court. It also helps when your PG is the one grabbing rebounds. Carlino had 7 rebounds last night. He was one assist and 3 boards shy of a triple double.

IMO the biggest difference was we played Man D, boxed out and got rebounds. And yes we ran the court after that. But the first 3 things weren't happening earlier this year.

I agree. Everyone except Haws ran the court better in the 2nd half. Which certainly helped ease up the game for Carlino, which in turn made it easier to run the court well. I think it all started though with Carlino's 2nd half effort being greater and his mind sharper.

Coach Rose finally decided, ok, we suck at man to man, but playing zone isn't helping us run. So let's roll the dice, play man and see if we can get our running game going. It worked.

True, and to do that he had to keep some of the regulars on the bench. We made our run with Davies, Austin, Haws, Zylstra and Carlino running the show.

Yep. Double ^^THIS'd^^

Coach Rose finally decided that our defense sucks, so we might as well try to outscore the other team.

Rose started playing to his strengths, for the first complete half in this season, and left his weaknesses behind.

Carlino, like everyone, is a product of the system he plays in. If the system sucks (and it did, BYU's half court "offense" was nonexistent), he is going to suck. Open up things, and make people accountable for not running the system or giving effort, and you get good results.

The fastbreak all starts with a leakout, while being able to rebound. Last night we did that in the second half. It was a lot of fun to watch, and I'd rather lose watching them do that and occasionally throw the ball away then everyone stand around on offense while the guy at the top of the key gets pestered and gets forced into throwing a bad pass to people that aren't moving.

This is why I have been saying all year that you get nothing with Cusick running the point. It should have been Calvert backing Carlino up from day one.

Agreed. Calvert didn't bring much to the scoresheet, but he is the type of player who should be playing. We have enough stand around guards at BYU. When you have a dynamic kid who is aggressive you need to unleash him. I look forward to him post-mission. In the meantime Winder is much like Calvert and needs to get more time as well. We have 2 aggressive guards who need a chance to work on their game during live action. Suit them up Rose! Just like last night.

BYUs WCC opponents know that BYU likes to run and that it is their strength. Therefore, they slow it down and play a half court game. UW played into our hand and tried to play the same game - altitude got to them in the second half and fatigue set in. They had spring in their legs to rebound, run or keep up defensively.

BYU also brought some intensity in the second half and as a result played better basketball - fewer turnovers, better D and good rebounding. Remember the last five games BYU played poorly in the second half, hit a poor spell of performance, and as a result lost 5 of 8.

Key for future games is if they can impose their will to run on other teams and keep up the intensity. If they can't, can they adjust to the grind it out game (typical of the WCC), and still find a way to win. We will also need to have a stronger contribution from the supporting cast in the future should any of the BIG3 get into foul trouble. Last night the BIG3 scored 79 points (equal to UW output for entire game).

Thank you. If Gonzaga, St. Mary's and BYU can all do well it might begin to pry the eastern media's eyes off their pets.

WCC schools not because they got back but because we chose not to run and instead to play inferior defense and an inferior offensive set. The hUskies were prepared for BYU

to run, and they tried to get back, but we rebounded and push the ball up tempo which we hadn't done previously the entire year

Agree. Crashing the boards was night and day in the 2nd half compared to the first. Man defense worked much better. UW was killing us by just swinging the ball and hitting open 3s when we were in our zone set.

Shots went up and everyone crashed the boards, and as soon as someone had it Haws would take off down court.

What killed us in WCC play was playing way too much zone and focusing too much on trying to limit opponents' games as opposed to focusing on playing ours. WCC refs and constant mauling they allowed on Haws didn't help much either.

You guys crack me up. You haven't figured out yet that the coach doesn't play the game, the players do. The coach responds to the way the players are playing and to how the other team is playing. Somehow you think that if he just played Carlino all the time and always played man-to-man we'd always score 90 points.

We saw what happened when we tried to play a lot of man-to-man against WCC opponents. It was ugly.

What happened in this game is that Washington allowed us to play BYU basketball, and the team ran with it! Many teams just won't let BYU play the style they would like, and Coach Rose has to adjust.
Q
Qman
I think we never played Man D this well or with this much intensity in the WCC.
