byucougar1Interesting stats - BYU shoots 54% from the field and 53% from 3 pt. land. Just need to bone up on FT.

Stanford is a team loaded with seniors that went to the 2nd round of the NIT last year. It seemed easy to beat them at their place, but they will be a top 50 RPI team this year. Very good win and on the road to boot.

Because I'm in an "antenna-only" tv mode right now, I was only able to listen to the game last night. Greg Wrubell rocks!
One thing I really noticed - although Greg Wrubell is obviously a fan of BYU, he is generally very balanced in his view of things like the referees. Yet he was stating over and over how poor the referees were, allowing Stanford to beat up on Haws, for example, and then calling ticky-tack calls on the other end. For those of you able to watch the game, was it this bad? If so, kudos to the Cougs for overcoming and winning in impressive style despite the bad calls.
It was obvious that the Cougars have a strong bench. With Carlino and Haws both out of the game with foul trouble in the first half, the team just kept scoring.
I thought I might fall asleep while listening, but no way! It made for a late night in the Central time zone. :bug: (This is me trying to stay awake today.)

It was bad in the first half. After Rose called them out it got a little better. Stanford players were crashing into our guys while we could barely breathe. Refs did not want to call any offensive fouls. That was very apparent, for both teams.
And why the one Stanford player wasn't T'd up for rushing down the court and shoving Mika while Mika was walking to the line, I don't know.

Good point. I'm glad the NCAA made the change about block/charges--it had made games unwatchable, almost like soccer, with all of the diving on the floor. But the no hands rule is pretty weak--although it's going to win us ball games. Especially since nobody on our schedule can stop Haws in the middle without keeping hands on him.

The refs still have to see it and call it. I have no doubt we'll get an unevenly called game a time or two this year. I worry that the refs have more potential to influence a game one way or another than they ever had before. There were a lot of calls last night that I couldn't even see contact. It was a little strange.

(Mika was obviously upset that he didn't get the rim rattling dunk, but whatever, I like the fire.)

Thanks for the feedback. I think with more even handed refs, the new rule interpretation may prevent the "beat up Haws" defense from being utilized so much this year. Time will tell.

Has Mika even had a dunk yet this year? I've seen him miss 2 already--I'm a little worried that my long-held theory about otherwise good leapers losing their hops upon arrival at BYU is true yet again.
