That was a really good win for the program. I don't know if we'll play another team with that kind of length and size again this season, but way to fight guys.

Man, I didn't realize how much I needed BYU to win that game. After ND and Iowa state in the same week, I was pretty bummed out about BYU sports.

Hey, Haws has been off and well defended last few games. Refs also started calling The hand checks in the 2nd half committed against Ty.

Game Preview

Running the attack for BYU is point guard Matt Carlino. Carlino is the sort of high volume shooter that doesn't look as good as he might otherwise when viewed through the lens of tempo-free statistics. He is mostly a jump shooter with a past history of turnover issues, although this season he has protected the ball well. While on the floor he is hoisting one out of every three shot attempts for BYU. Frankly, the more he shoots, the better it will be for the Texas Longhorns. He is more dangerous when he is making plays for others than when he is forced to shoot himself.

More worrisome is Tyler Haws, a 6-5 wing who knows how to score. When the Cougars are prevented from shooting quickly, Haws becomes their go to player in the half-court. While only appearing in three games, Haws has averaged 26 PPG.

Carlino's running buddies are often 6-3 Anson Winder and 6-6 Kyle Collinsworth. Winder lives off of shot opportunities created by Carlino in transition, while the versatile Collinsworth can handle the ball, rebound, and score. Big man Eric Mika also fills well in transition, while the 6-11 Nate Austin is BYU's best rebounder.

BYU is less powerful on defense, but the Cougars do a nice job of cleaning up on the boards, which is essential for a team that wants to run.

During its home loss to Iowa State, BYU's offense was held back by poor shooting. Iowa State's compact defense forced Rose's team to frequently settle for difficult shots. The Cougars will take the first remotely reasonable shot of the possession. To hold down BYU, Texas will need to make sure as many of those attempts as possible are contested mid-range jump shots, and not easy layups or wide open threes.

Outstanding job. Any chance you can do this for every game?

Good thing you know the ending or you will yell, cuss, and die a thousand deaths. Cougar Nation really needed this one tonight. Go Cougs!

What did Haws do differently to score 23 points in the second half?

I thought he was a little more patient and quit forcing over their bigs, shots came in rhythm and flow of game, got hot at right time, teammates did great job of helping free him up off screens, hit ft's, and one HUGE18' floater on baseline as shot clock expired. Dude has ice in his veins.

Just got back from the game. The difference in the game was that in the last 10 minutes the refs finally starting calling over the back on Texas to negate their offensive rebounds. That's all Texas had going for them. And they also started calling hand checking on the guy guarding Haws. If they had called those all night we would have blown them away.

I also watched half of the Wichita St. game. They look really good. No one stand out player, but they play as a team and can do everything: drive, rebound, shoot, play D. It's a home game for Wichita St. I saw maybe 2 dozen orange shirts, a couple hundred BYU fans and at least 75% were Wichita St. fans.

Haws was injured. Missed two games. A week ago, he said it takes a while to loosen up. Hard to know. Injury may still cause tightness until he heats up - literally and then figuratively.

Stanford gave the Cougars of Houston their first loss tonight.

Stanford has only lost to BYU.

Gonzaga is on. They shoot very well. Worried about playing the Zags.

Bib, don't worry about Zags just yet. Let's shock the Shockers and then take little brother down a notch on Saturday. Everything in due time. Go Cougars!

I pulled most of my hair out in the second half ( what's left of it). Things started to get real fun when Tyler gave us the lead then hit foul shots.

What a game! So much for not being able to win close games or Haws not putting the team on his back.

Great game. Boy did I need that pick me up. Great performances all around. Showed a lot of hustle. Even when we were up felt like we weren't winning. Texas has some tremendous players. Good adjustments by Rose.

I liked how every time TX got a 4 point lead and looked like they were about to stretch it the Cougs fought back. I liked how Mika, KC and Austin were able to come back in with 4 fouls and hold the line. I liked how Bartley came off the bench and picked us up. I liked how Carlino was able to light them in the first half and Haws in the second. I liked how they hung in there and didn't fold under pressure. I have to admit I was a doubting Thomas right up to the last couple of minutes. Those guys were beasts and they weren't calling a lot of the fouls. So much to like about this team, it will be a fun season!!!

Go Cougs!
