Haws (3-15) and Carlino (7-19) and KC (points) NA (0 points), Bartley 7 points but no backup support.

Nate Austin just ended the game right there. No idea what he was thinking with that elbow.

I think he's just an uncoordinated oaf, that's it. Game over though. This one is on the offensive rebounding.

Mika needs to learn to rebound.

I think he'd be a lot better at it if BYU would run man defense. No excuse of course, but BYU has GOT to learn some man if they want to get better.

BYU can't expect to win a game where they give up 17 o-boards and shoot 30 percent from the field. and close to zero percent fg% the last 10 minutes of the game. And your playing the #12 team in the country. Terrible 2nd half. lucky it was that close.

I thought BYU ran a zone defense after a miss/turnover on the other end, and they run man after a make. If that's still the case, nights like tonight when Haws and Carlino are filling up just one side of the make/attempt columns, you don't get to play a lot of man to man, and the zone offensive rebounding strategy seems to be 1,2,3,5 clear out and let the 4 try to beat three guys for the rebound.

Best FG percentage - Mika (3-6). Should play inside-outside game. We had same problem last year when we lived and died by the long ball. Also need to put foot to the throat when building a large lead. Very disappointing loss - it seems that they haven't learned their lesson yet.

I don't get the foot on the gas all the time mentality. You are right we should work it inside and out. Drive and kick. But there is just chuck and drive.

I think it's no coincidence we're struggling in 2nd halves. Good teams go and make adjustments to slow our pace. We keep doing what we did and since we have no plan B on offense we get caught.

When Mika in the game, he draws in the defense with his post presence, and allows for outside shot. However, if the outside shooters jack it up whether hot or not, we give up too much.

Bright side of the season, they can play with #21 and #12 teams in the country. Just need to be balanced on both ends of the floor, and address weaknesses (FT, Rebounding, and contributions from KC with Mika finding a way to play most of the game).

Not that I saw, BYU ran zone for about 3 minutes during the last 10 minutes of play. That was about it. And they still got schooled.

Rose needs to start rewarding efficiency rather than letting Carlino and Haws try to scatter-gun their way out of slumps in crunch time.

Agreed. It can't be hurry and shoot every possession.

To be clear, I'm not saying to bench them both (maybe just sit one at a time, but not both) and I'm not saying to leash them, but in a game this close under five minutes to go and they are slumping that bad, you gotta tell them---"No more jumpshots from you two tonight, and Matty, absolutely no Jimmer-range attempts." Limit their shots from that point to attempts in the paint and make them into drive and dish/score/get fouled guys for the rest of the game.

There's a time and place to shoot your way out of a slump. It's not during the last five minutes of a three- or fewer possession game.

Although I agree that the run n gun methodology where a few guys are running before a rebound is secured is not helping the matter. Esp since Austin and Mika are both less than average rebounders for their height.

Next game up is vs USU in Energy Arena. Will be another tough match up.

So basically BYU is looking at another first round loss. (at this point)

Some key stats that point to a loss:

FG Made-Attempted 18-60 (.300)

3P Made-Attempted 5-21 (.238)

Yet what did the guards do - jack up the three or miss point blank shots at the rim (failure to finish). KC contributing and this game is ours.

We learn a bit from yesterday and today's loss and we could win a round, have to get there first and losing to ISU and Wichita doesn't help much.

WSU stats were terrible as well. Difference in this game came down to rebounding, 2nd chance points, hustle plays and not losing cool. and WSU was the better team in all those regards.

Winder said the 2nd half intensity wasn't as great as 1st half. After 37 minutes, they faltered and didn't make big plays.

Make that 27 minutes and I agree wholeheartedly.

It seems the good teams can play pressure defense to force missed shots, rebound tenaciously and then convert baskets in key situations. Number of upcoming difficult games coming up to see if they have learned their lesson.

Scary part is, USU is another team that is built like ISU and WSU. Hustle plays, second chances, tough rebounding, good shooting from the outside. I could certainly see BYU going down on sat.

In BYU's defense, I believe they were a lot more worn out after last nights battle with Texas than WSU was after DePaul. Probably contributed to the way they looked in the second half tonight. Again, props to WSU who is clearly a solid program for looking fresh tonight after also having played last night.

Certainly i think BYU will be favored, and I EXPECT BYU to shake this defensive slump and beat the ags, but BYU has also played 3 tough games and I wonder how fresh they are going to look on Saturday. I hope they are in better shape than me.
