Okay. I'm at peace with the fact that we're not a top 25 team and so there's nothing to be ashamed of playing all these ranked teams so tight, but couldn't we at least get ONE! It just hurts. Hurts deep. Especially how we've had big leads in all of these games....I'm really sick of giving other teams "good wins".

Can't wait for conference play! Hopefully these games have been lessons learned.

I still think we are a top 25 team.......we'd destroy a few of the teams in the top 25 right now...........

Yep let's hang our hat on being the best 5 loss team in the country  This team will have to go 15-3 in WCC play and make it to WCC semi-finals to get a bid.

We'll need to knock off Gonzaga. What sucks is that Oregon was the kind of top team we had a good chance against because they're small. The Zags have big boys as always, which is going to kill us. I wonder how much BK will help the rest of the year?

I wouldn't call it "hanging my hat." I'm not happy about it, but there's nothing we can do about it now. I have enough things in my life to stress about. Plus, there are certainly worse things than being the best 5 loss team in the country.

Another way to put it: how much will He help us suck less. But great post

Teams that take Oregon to OT in their own house do not suck. Get serious. But, BYU is not a great team. Depth inside. fT %. 3 PT shooting. Defense at times. This team still has a decent shot to go one and done in March.

Absolutely agree there could be worse things, but to say this is a "top 25 team" because "we'd destroy a few of the top 25 right now" is ludicrous. Fact: BYU is 0-4 against current top 25 teams and was destroyed by one team that isn't even sniffing the top 25. I believe this is a good team that will do well in WCC play and will be squarely on the bubble come March.

Another thing I was very happy with...we played Man v Man all night long! That was beautiful and Oregon is a very athletic team. We have the guys to handle it and I really hope Rose sees that now. I just wish it didn't take 5 losses to get there.

There are teams that you can never count out, where no matter how much you think a loss is a sure thing, they manage to pull off wins, like BYU football in the 1980 Holiday Bowl.

Our basketball team is the opposite, you can never count on a victory, no matter how much it looks like the game is in hand. Up by 7 with under two minutes to go? Don't count on a win, they'll figure out some way of handing this game to the other team. Up by double-digits at the half? Don't worry, they'll give the other team a run without going on one of their own.

I'm tired of moral victories and talking RPI, there are games that we could have won, big games, but we've managed to give most of them away.

PS-Anyone still think we don't want Fusi to join the team after the bowl game to eat up some big-man fouls? Having them grab every rebound late because our biggest guy on the floor was a 6-7 Sharp was frustrating.

Actually' there was at least several zone sets in H1 that I recall and maybe once or twice in H2. But certainly more man and a better mix. But I think more strategic modulation would really help.

But look at the downside--both our bigs fouled out. Now, maybe some fouls were careless like Mikas circus swat at end of regulation. But our bigs were constantly exposed to guards penetrating our D, beating our guards. Mika got all five fouls in H2.

And Schmoe is right on--as have I been--we need SMASH now and will need him much more vs Bigs in the WCC; and especially now that Rose has relegated Luke to less than Sharp.

Don't forget that we did two boneheaded 3 point fouls in the last minutes. Your taught not to jump in jr jazz.

Iirc, smash was relegated to less than Sharp last season.

Smash would not have helped us last night. The pace at which multiple games have been played, I'm not sure Bronson can run the floor well enough to get back on defense. We'd be playing 4 on 5 until he arrives late on D, and now he's out of position to help.

But let's say, just hypothetically, that Austin and Mika have both fouled out, and we're up by a few points at the end of the game, and there's a dead ball every time down the floor b/c the opp team is in foul-first mode. I don't think anyone is saying BK is anything more than a big body with 5 fouls to give, but I definitely think we could have used him last night. Whether or not a limited role is enough to justify a temporary switch from FB again is the limiting factor here IMO.

That was my take away. We finally stopped with the 35 minutes of zone. The bad thing is both bigs fouled out but I will say even if they were in the zone they would have fouled out.

Some other thoughts. To me Carlino is like a jato rocket and should be used that way. I think if they had him shoot 4 or 5 3pts in the first 5 min and shoot maybe as many as 8 by the 10 min mark he would make a huge amount of those and would get the team going. He usually is weak shooting from three after those first 10 min when the running starts to show. And in the second half he should'nt shoot a three unless he is wide open and almost on the line, otherwise it will doink off the front of the rim.

Something really killing the team is FT's. To me it looks like Mika is truly working on getting better but it doesn't look that way with Collinsworth. You can take 500 ft's after every practice, but if you are not concentrating on getting better and establishing your ft shot you are just about wasting your time. There has to be a sort of "routine". It also looks like Austin has put in some serious time to improve also. But to me the key is KC. He is very good at driving in but if he can't make teams pay from the free throw line they will hack him nearly every time.

One thing I think they need too are some better plays to get Haws open. They have one that seems to work well getting him the ball by the ft line which he hits almost every time but they only run it a few times. Other than that they seem to run him around and try to set him up once or twice for a backdoor basket. Just seems like a lot of work for only a couple of baskets (one of them usually resulting in a foul and free throws.

Let's say, hypothetically, that Smash was used as a sub instead of an already-in-foul trouble Austin for Mika, then Austin doesn't foul out, and subsequently, Mika doesn't foul out, and then we have two big guys on the floor to grab the rebounds when we desperately needed them and we win the game instead of giving up a plethora of offensive rebounds late when we needed them most.

And maybe he adds 5 more fouls in regulation and Oregon hits their free throws and doesn't even need over time to win?

I don't understand how he could add five more fouls when other players who fouled out at the very end of the game would not be on the floor as the same time as him.

How can you be so obtuse? :-)
