Currentlyin the Lunardi has BYU OUT, if they lose to USF. I'd imagine they will be on that bubble the rest of the season.

He also has them ranked #47.

BYU should be out if they lose to USF. Failure to beat highly ranked teams, mostly I need the road, has not hurt BYU.

Losing to Portland hurt the most. Losing to LMU hurt 2nd most. Losing to Pepperdine hurt next most. Losing to U hurt next most.

BYU cannot lose to another team in regular conference play or in the tournament not named Zags or Gaels and get in unless they beat both of those teams but suffer 1 loss on the road.

There will be several teams dancing that would lose to ISU in a close game at home and to UMASS, Wichita State, Oregon, and Gonzaga on the road.

That's just it though. Those other WCC losses have put BYU where they are today. In a must win game against USF. If BYU had won every game they were supposed to (including utah) we wouldn't even be having this discussion and BYU would be much closer than 3 games out of first in the WCC. USF is no gimme. And I'm not sure BYU has enough clout that I can write off any games as a win at this point

Summary of BYU basketball to this point

Record 16-9

RPI 45 (fairly mediocre)

Rank 49 (according to ESPN)

remaining schedule:

SF

@PAC

@SMC

GONZ

Port

@SD

To make the tournament I think BYU is going to have to win all remaining games except the Gonzaga game. If BYU goes into selection sunday tied up with SMC for 2nd place it will really hurt their chances. Beating the zags at home would be nice, but a win at SMC is huge. As is today's game with SF @provo.

In summary if BYU goes 5-1 in the remaining 6 games and that loss is to the zags, I think they've done just enough to maybe make the field of 68.

There are 351 Basketball teams. RPI 45 is hardly mediocre.

It is if you are talking about making it to the dance. Again, have to look at the bigger picture.

I think you have to factor in the WCC tournament as well. I think it will take your 5-1 scenario and at least an appearance in the WCC championship game as well. The WCC has the potential to be a 1 bid league if Zags win WCC tournament.

With the Pac12 doing well this year for the WCC to get two teams in its going to have to be a clear two horse race with BYU coming in second or someone other than Gonzaga winning the conference tournament.

This thread can now officially die. I was having fun tracking BYU's journey to the 68! Alas, I blieve the only way to make the tournament is to win the conference tournament. Nigh impossible feat I imagine.

This BYU BBall team will not make the tourney and if they get invited to a lower tiered tourney will bow out early. This is the worst Dave Rose coached BYU team we have seen. They have no chance of winning the WCC tourney.

Not necessarily, no. If they can beat Stanford, Texas, St. Mary's, etc, they can go far in the NIT playing home games in Provo. Again.
