Doubt the WCC will reprimand him.

What a jerk. BYU owns USF, though. Don't think they've beaten us yet since coming to the conference. Meanwhile, pepperdine has. Hahaha!

ExpandReplyRetweetFavorite

This was in the context of "Do you still think your team is the best?" he said "Yes" and that he didn't care if that made others mad.

that in and of itself is not bad... actually I think its good. I want my kids' coach to go into a locker room after a tough loss and say to the team "I wouldn't trade any one of you for any one else int he conference" I want my kids' coach to publicly state that he thought his team is the best and not care if that offends someone (what really is offensive about that anyway?)

Rex Walters may have some faults, but this statement is certainly not one of them, and if anyone took offense, then that person is simply looing for an occasion to take offense. It is objectivly not an offensive statement

Bronco essentially said the same thing after the 2010 :utard: game although he didn't throw in the "I don't care what they think" part of it. Is there some sort of back story on that or is it just that BYU is a Mormon school and Mormons live in Utah. (Actually, I kind of like the quote that he equates all Utahn's to BYU fans and Mormons becuase that will just irk the Ute fans/Mormon haters and that's always good :P )

It may not be an offensive statement. But it is objectively a completely misinformed statement.

You simply can't finished third in your league and lose ALL five games to the teams that finished first and second and still the best team in that league. There is no basis for that kind of opinion that is patently false.

Coaches should believe their teams can win every game. But after the season, there is nothing wrong with admitting that you weren't the best team and that BYU was better than you. But that next year will be different.

There is nothing wrong with sticking up for his guys - especially given what he apparently demands of them. But, I heard the interview. It was the combative tone with which he uttered them that was offensive. Take it as a compliment. I did not hear him call out Zags. Maybe he sees it this way.

I think I agree with what you are saying, but when a coach says something that is wrong, or false, we can tase them about how wrong they are or how stupid their statement is without getting offended about it

Back when we joined the WCC I predicted it would be three years before we start seeing the love-to-hate BYU attitude in the conference.

If you visit other team's message boards it's just more of the same we saw from MWC fans - we play dirty, we're a bunch of whiners, blah, blah, blah.

I hope the team embraces it, gets a chip on their shoulder and uses it as motivation.

Yeah, getting up in arms about using the word Mormon to essentially describe all of Utah is just dumb. But then again, he does think we'd be dumb enough to believe that he's correct in thinking his team is better than ours when we just beat them for the third time this year and sixth time in the seven meetings since we joined the conference.

He was the better coach that night. That is for damn sure. He just doesn't have the talent that BYU does. If he did, he would have run Rose out of the gym. Rose went with the wrong lineup starting, and down the stretch and it almost bit him in the butt. We go with that same lineup again and we lose to Gonzaga. It won't even be close.

Austin needs to be Mika's backup, not starting alongside him. Austin is a nervous wreck on offense, and it is hurting the team. You can't afford to give major minutes to a guy that kind of rebounds and kind of defends and is an absolute zero on the offensive side of the ball.

PG Carlino

SG Winder (or Halford, whichever is hotter)

SF Haws

PF KColl

C Mika

This should be the meat of the lineup. When BYU is creating a lead and maintaining it, it is because these guys are on the court. Rose needs to realize this and do it or we lose to the Zags, and are a first round exit inthe tourney, if we even make it in.
S
SpiffCoug
Rose made a mistake of changing a line up that had played very well down the stretch. He changed team dynamics by re-inserting Mika into the lineup.
B
Brayden Green
Rose made a mistake by sitting Carlino and MIka in the first place. Austin and Sharp out there at the same time? What the hell... You have two players on offense that have absolutely no desire to shoot the ball, or even have it in their hands. That was just bad, bad, coaching.

With a double digit lead Rose started resting everyone midway through the first, which I understand, but you have to make sure that you get the win, and when USF made their run Rose was too slow to get the right guys back in. He didn't have the right guys in until the last few minutes, and then it was too late USF had momentum and went in ahead at half. Rose was a subsitution nightmare last night.

I am not sure why Haws is on the bench and Sharp is playing in his place for 5 minutes down the stretch last night. Why not play Carlino and Winder (or Halford) and then slide KC down to guard Dickerson, instead of Austin or Sharp. KC can defend as well as either of those guys, and he actually has a chance of scoring and/or rebounding on the offensive side of the ball.

Coaching mistake, after mistake, after mistake, after mistake.

It is amazing to me that he hasn't found the right starting lineup this late in the season for the 3rd year in a row. This is the time to be finalizing your chemistry, not starting a new one. That showed down the stretch in that game. Teams just don't score for 6 minutes at a time. That almost loss is on Rose, and the only reason USF didn't win is BYU easily has twice the amount of talent they do.

I agree. Mika off the bench has been great for us.

I wonder if Rose was trying to get Haws and other starters some rest for tonight's game?

While talking about coaching mistakes, a screen should have been called for MC on the final possession of regulation. MC had been pressured all night and rather than risk MC beating him off the dribble, use a screen to get MC some room.

Anyways...

Here's the full quote from Walters:

"I would say we are the best team in this tournament. The best team may not have won tonight. Our hat's off to BYU ... There may be a lot of Mormons mad at me, but I don't give a rat's you-know-what what the state of Utah thinks of me. I'm proud of our guys. They won the game tonight. They deserved it. They played better tonight. But I wouldn't trade one of my guys for any player in this tournament. Not one."

Walters is certainly wrong about being the better team. And while he made not trade any of his players for other guys in the conference we all know he's more than willing to trade his players for new recruits.
B
Brayden Green
He was. It almost lost him the game. Rose fails to see that the zone defense is just demonstrably bad. It loses us so many games that we shouldn't. He needs to go with a lineup where they can play man. If that means sitting Haws or KColl and rotating them, then that is what it means. (I personally think that KColl should be playing the 4 against anyone that isn't 6'10 and 285 lbs.) Almost anytime BYU has created a lead and maintained it, it has been due to playing man (normally with Carolina at point, winder or Halford at sg, haws at St or sitting and winder/Bartley in, etc etc.)

Byu's main problem is that they are starting the wrong people in the wrong places, because Rose likes playing the match-up game, but he doesn't know how to do it well.

I don't get the bagging on Austin. He is no scorer that is for sure, but he statistically outrebounds Mika, has more blocks than Mika, has more steals than Mika, and has fewer turnovers. Austin has played 100 minutes more than Mika so thiings like steals, blocks and turnovers might even out some if you were to average over minutes played. Bottom line though is that while he is not and will never be a scorer, when it comes to rebounding and defense, he carries his share, at least it seems to me.

It truly amazes me how some "fans" (okay, a couple of "fans") are so quick to point out all of the "stupid" and "crappy" decisions Coach Rose made last night in a critical, hard-fought win. Some of you "fans" (okay, a couple of "fans") ought to save BYU some serious cash and offer your services as both the football O-Coordinator and the basketball head coach. I have no doubt that based on your astute observations and comments posted here and in previous posts, that you are more than over-qualified to handle such duties. It might get a little tricky in October, November, and December when the seasons overlap, and in March what with March Madness and Spring Practice. But then again, you have proven time and again that you are "the man" (or men) for the job. If the gig(s) at BYU don't interest you, then you could take your pick from many college basketball programs throughout the country who periodically suffer from "Rose/Anae/Bronco Stupiditis" as you can glean from the info. below. I am sure your uncanny insight and wisdom would land you the job in a heartbeat. Truly amazing. Go Cougars!

Too often, long scoring droughts doomed the Badgers, who finished in a tie for fourth place, two games behind first-place Indiana

Shabazz Napier scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Connecticut to a 51-45 upset of No. 11 Cincinnati at Hartford on Saturday.

The Huskies (23-6, 11-5 American Athletic Conference) won despite going without a field goal for the game’s final seven and a half minutes.

With a little more than 16 minutes left Saturday, Marquette had a 12-point lead on a team that had yet to win in the Big East.

But from that point until the end of regulation, the Golden Eagles scored two field goals.

And so it was that the team that has yet to learn how to close out a road game failed to do so again amid the frenzied din at Hinkle Fieldhouse in the 69-57 overtime loss to Butler.

It all started after Green Bay called a timeout and switched to a zone defense. The zone stymied CSU. The Vikings would go the next 8:59 without a basket.

Nebraska went on one of its program-patented scoring droughts over the final seven minutes, and the Husker men lost to Purdue 70-64 on Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind....

The Tigers (12-13, 4-10) have lost four of five games and had a late scoring drought of 4 minutes, 28 seconds.

A six-minute scoreless spell late in the second half proved to be crucial for the University of Michigan basketball team as the Wolverines dropped a 77-72 decision at Indiana

With a 20 loss season looming, the inconsistent Hokie men's basketball team finds something that remains constant: long field goal droughts

The Bears (10-6, 2-2 Pac-12) won despite committing 19 turnovers, giving up 21 offensive rebounds and being held without a basket over the final 4:59.

Then there was close to a four-minute scoring drought from the Sooners.

Cool story, bro.

Rose got out coached. He needs to right the ship. Questioning the "fanhood" of someone that spends countless hours on a BYU fan site, much less countless hours and money spent actually watching the games seems stupid.

Why don't you address the topic instead of going full ad hominen?
