First things first, I am proud of our boys. They played TERRIBLE offensively, and hustled all over the court - especially in the 2nd half - diving for lose balls and grabbing rebounds.

As far as the game, I have been saying for weeks that we are starting the wrong guys, Carlino didn't come into the game until we were almost down 20 points. (He come in first at 13:00 mark, I think we were down 25 to 9 at that point). I am not sure why we expected different. Sure, he didn't shoot well, but he is the only person wearing a BYU jersey that knows how to pass the ball and have it go to a player on your team.

Kcoll at point in the first 7 minutes: 4 turnovers, 2 bad shots running down and throwing the ball up, and 0 assists. This is our starting point guard? He should be playing small forward or power forward, where he would be able to take slower players off the dribble.

Winder got exposed quite thoroughly for his man to man defense the last two games. I still think Halford is better defensively, and this game proved it. Winder is better offensively though.

The zone needs to die. It can't go away fast enough. Any team that is halfway decently coached can destroy it, and the last two games proved it. Forwards need to play at the forward positions, and guards need to play at the guard position. They got off to such a great start because Stockton is running circles around Collinsworth, and everyone leaves their guy to help for an open jumper, which they hit.

Good game by Gonzaga, good coaching, and good team play. If it wasn't against my Cougs that would have been a fun game to watch. Their ball movement reminded me of watching my Spurs play.

Blue, our zone has some weird rotations. We are so concerned about the elbow extended threes we give a bunch of uncontested ones in the opposite corner.

Winder and Halford bring different things defensively. Halford's main problem is he is too weak to hold his own in big games (let'em play games.) Winder's strength allows him to make several players Halford just physically can't.

Though to me everyone but Haws, Bartley and Carlino got too scared to shoot in crunch time. Unfortunately Carlino missed all of his shots- even the good looks.

Over the last couple of games KC would have gotten a few of those boards.

Winder over Halford all day. When was the last time Halford did anything on O? He's done in the program as far as I'm concerned. (I can't believe BYU still doesn't have a 3 point threat since the Jimmer days.) I have never supported KC as the PG. He's not helping the team unless he's close to the bucket on every possession.

We had plenty of Carlino minutes in the tournament.

Kyle had a total of 4 turnovers. MC only 2. KC 1 assist. MC 2. Neither impressive. MC 1 steal vs 0. But, KC out shot MC again. Even from the FT line. Out rebounded him as usual. MC was at the point 29 minutes before he fouled out. So, KC at the point 10 minutes with someone else finishing at the point after MC fouled out. I would hope MC would get a few more assists with nearly 3 times KC minutes at the point. Only Tyler Haws had more minutes than Carlino. Not sure how you get MC first coming in at 13:00 when the box score shows him with 29 minutes and given that he fouled out. They both tried to step up given everyone else was cold shooting, and KC turned it over, but actually shot much better than MC. MC was cold and took several bad shots - but turned it over less.

Both Haws and MC shot well below their average last night and throughout the WCC tourney. If either player shot their averages last night we would have walked away with a title.

Haws:

Gonzaga - 6/14

USF - 5/19

LMU - 9/22

MC:

Gonzaga - 3/12

USF - 4/12

LMU - 3/11

On the season, MC is shooting 39% (not impressive at all). During the WCC tourney he shot 29%. On the season, Haws is shooting 46%. During the WCC tourney he shot 36%. Both players shot 10 points below their season averages in the tournament. Even if both of them shot 5 points below their averages we still would have won.

Haws got to the line more and shot well from the line, fortunately, but it masks his sub par shooting.

One thing I hope Haws works on over the season is his passing game. He's a guard. If he wants any hope of playing at the next level he needs to learn to pass. He had 3 turnovers last night. Next season he'll once again get all sorts of attention from defenses and he needs to learn to use that to BYU's advantage.

Also ballhandling. If haws could create a shot and pass off the dribble he would be a lottery pick for sure, with his mind.

BYU is easily defended because they have been playing 4 on 5 offensively. Nate Austin passes up way too many shots that he basically does not have to be guarded. So that frees up a post defender to guard the paint. This means perimeter defenders don't have to worry as much in getting beat because there is always going to be a help defender in the middle.

Your opening stmt is flawed. Haws shot his Avg% last night - 7 of 14 would be over his average. He also got his average points basically. Now, if Carlin had hit his average from the floor, from 3, and FT l8ne. That might have gotten us there or close enough that if Winder also hit his avg, we win for sure.

Everybody was off in one way or another. Tired. Out of synch.

6/14 is 43%. Suppose that's not "well below" his average and one more make would have put him at 50% shooting. So, he's right there. If I recall most of this 6 made shots came off of layups. He struggled from the outside as did MC.

MC shot 40% (2/5) from the line. He's 68% on the season. So if he shot his average he would have chipped in 2 more points there. From the behind the arc MC was 0 - 5. On the season he's shooting 34%. Had he shot is average, that would have been 6 more points. Basically 8 points from MC if he shot his average last night.

Winder had a bad game. Not a single point, and since starting he's been averaging about 15 pts/game. We needed those points last night.

Once KC went down all Gonzaga had to do was guard Haws and MC.

That was my only point. You said "if either player hit his average we walk away with WCC Title." That is the part that is not true. Haws was not the issue. He got his average. Ugly. But got there - within a half bucket on FG percentage. Call that 1 point under. But he more than made up for that with free throws.

Carlino and Winder were way off their averages on FG and FT and 3Pt. If they both hit their averages, we beat Gonzaga. That is the only relevant game. We beat LMU and USF.

If BOTH Carrlino and Winder hit their averages - then BYU wins WCC Tournament.
