Sooooooooo, Heaps had a pretty good day at the All-American Bowl.

I'd love to say what I think about this topic, but don't feel like judging or being judged. ;)

Ah c'mon - get of the fence you Nancy! ;) :P

Oh, I'm off the fence. I know exactly where I stand.

It's just more fun not getting involved and watching this all unfold. :D

The same spirit that I sited at the start of my post that told Nephi to kill a man???

Wouldn't killing a man be contrary to the guidance of the prophets?

Exodus 21:12-14 demonstrate that Nephi acted in accordance with Law of Moses at the time. Nephi did not countermand the commandments of the prophets, but rather acted in accord therewith. To be a "murder" within the Law of Moses, one had to act with guile (the example Exodus provides is lying in wait to kill) or without the Lord delivering the man into his hands. In Nephi's case, Nephi did not act with guile, and additionally the Lord delivered the man into his hands. Nephi's killing of Laban was excusable under the Law of Moses--the commandments of his time.

As with steve young being succesfful at football just opens the door to the actual missionary work. The breaking down of barriers in the minds of ignorant people by realizing that hey, maybe mormons aren't all cultist, Steve young (Jake Heaps) look like a decent guy. Followed by drawing crowds doing firesides around the country and settting a good example.

Plus, on a lighter personal side I feel like donny probably converted more people on dancing with the stars than I did my whole mission.

There is more to missions than conversion my friend.

Ok. As a former missionary, I would urge all those young men who do not want to go on a mission...TO NOT GO ON A MISSION!!!

There is nothing worse than being around a missionary who lacks desire to be there. Since the raising the bar challenge this same sentiment has been expressed by general authorities. The work is too important to have people out wasting time.

Absolutely agreed.

12 ¶ He that asmiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to bdeath.

13 And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a aplace whither he shall flee.

14 But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die.

An excellent selection of scripture which is exactly what I was hoping for. Obviously Nephi is no murderer, nor did he break any commandments. I have argued defending that countless times over the years. The point I was making with that whole is that the Lord via the spirit directs people to what is needed to be done. So we have no legimate claim to saying that Heaps is not doing what the spirit has told him to do. So maybe we should all just apperciate him living a life worthy to be a Quaterback at BYU and respect him and support him as a brother in the gospel, and leve his decisions regarding missionary service to the lord, Heaps, and his preistood leaders.

"There is more to missions than conversion my friend."

Thank you for that reminder.... I was merely trying to make a joke, but I suppose it was a poor one. I served my mission too, I will leave it as that because I feel no need to justify anything else. There is more to being a missionary than wearing a name tag and suit for two years as well.

My only post on this thread, here it goes:

If you choose not to go on a mission, that's a personal choice and I take no issue with you because of it, but please don't pretend that you've received personal revelation that is directly contradictory to the words of the prophet. No need to make excuses, just say that at this point you've made a personal decision to focus on football.

Any BYU fans that are upset that Heaps is not "living the commandents" by not serving a two-year mission should turn in their season tickets until he graduates. Then you would be showing your opposition to the demon spawn who are unwilling to go on missions.

I guaranty if Steve Young had ended up going on a mission and then his career had ended up being similar to Ben Olson's then his greatest regret would have been going on a mission. It would be a lot easier to make your peace with God after your NFL playing days are over anyway since you would have a lot of sabbath days to be repenting for on top of the mission commandment. BTW I missed the mission commandment on the stone tablets...

I guess this post mainly shows my annoyance at threads on a Football forum turning into gospel discussion. Just let the kid play football!!!

This is the stupidest post I have ever read on this website. Congratulations on this honor. First, who are you to say that anyone should not be able to watch BYU football just because we hope that a kid chooses to do what he is commanded by the lord. NO ONE is calling Heaps "demon spawn" Second, you don't know Steve young or Ben olson so how can you tell us what they would or would not regret. It is well known that Steve Young regretted not going on a mission. Having said that, Steve Young is a fine example of a member and has represented his faith very well in the media.

Austin Collie has said many times that he was not sure about whether he wanted to go on a mission until after his freshman year, he said that he realized that he was blessed with his talent by God and needed to show his thankfulness by going on a mission. It doesn't seem to have hurt him any for the sacrifice he made. What if Heaps or some other young man that decides not to go on a mission has a career ending injury before being able to sign an NFL contract, do you think they would then regret not having served? Saying that going on a mission would cause regret if a person was unable to fulfill expected sports potential undermines the fact that sometimes the Lord has different plans for his children then his children think they should get. Anyway, I am rambling. The bottom line is, going on a mission is a commandment from the Lord, I hope Heaps comes to BYU and makes the decision to go on a mission no matter how successful he is in his freshman year, similar to what Collie did. No matter what happens after his mission, he will realize blessings from the Lord that he cannot right now forsee.

Thank you for the honor.

So glad this thread got moved out of the football section.

#1 -- I wish he would serve a mission

I wish all LDS youth would be both worthy and eager to serve a mission. What more is there to say than that?

I have met some of the Osmonds and they are great people. I don't regret them not going on a two year mission.

I have a son named after Steve Young.

One of the reasons I think that Heaps could have said football is his mission is because there could be a lot of people asking him about a mission and he said that just to get them off their backs.

I am not disappointed in the slightest. I want Heaps to do what he think is the right thing to do.

The reason Young men are asked to go on a mission is not to try to convert souls to the gospel, just like the reason the Lord asks us all to pay tithing has little to do with financing the church. We are talking about the creator of all things. God could get a more effective way to convert people to the church. The reason young men are asked to go on a mission at 19 is because it is a sacrifice. Just like paying tithing is a sacrifice. I am sure that Heaps, or Steve young or any well known mormon can be very effective in converting people to the church and bringing a good example to the church but where is the sacrifice in that? There are blessings that come from the sacrifice that these young men will not realize by foregoing the sacrifice to pursue thier own interests. I will root for Heaps no matter what he does. I just hope he decides to do what has been commanded by the Prophet when he gets to BYU and goes on a mission.

This thread sucks. Its like the manti teo threads. Its a personal decision. Lets treat it that way. I think taking offense to what he said it being a little oversensitive. We can teach our kids what is right and wrong as we will.

whoops, i posted this before i saw it had been moved.

We are. It's a personal decision to either do the right thing or not. Sorry for wanting what is best for this kid, even if it may be best for the team for him to never serve.

Until the kid turns 26 or whenever the cutoff is, lets lend him some slack. He can always change his mind, and he very well might, after playing for Bronco and being around all the returned missionaries.

I believe the cut off is, before your 24th birthday, so someone COULD play all 4 years, and still go.

I hope he gets to BYU and realizes that playing football is secondary to serving the lord. I will not judge him for his decision but going on a missing is a commandment to all worthy males. It doesn't exclude the most talented ones, sports wise, because they can use thier sport to spread the message.

Yeah, I believe that it was Spencer W. Who made that very clear. BTW, I didn't go because I was just too scared, and have spent my life being sorry for that decision.

We had an Elder in my mission who was already 24 when he got his call so maybe it's before you turn 25. But you make a good point about being able to play all four years and still being able to serve a mission.

I'd be shocked if Heaps didn't harbor NFL plans.

who needs Apostles when we've got all of you?

I'm glad that everyone here has all the answers.

Anyway, ultimately Heaps is the only person affected by this. And if anyone is going to say that people who should be baptized will suffer for his decision, then perhaps they ought to be studying the gospel more than preaching it.

I rarely have any idea what you're talking about anymore.
