Kona is also quoted as saying "I love BYU". Phillips was recruited by Alabama, Michigan, and Cincinnati, among others. Phillips kept true to his word though, while Schwenke threw the blessing of a BYU scholarship (an answer to a personal prayer) out the window.

And yes, it will be VERY interesting to see if Schwenke ends up serving a mission now, like he said he wanted to do at BYU. Hopefully his immaturity here doesn't end up costing him THAT as well... :~(

I get it, I get it. I just get annoyed with people like you who seem so excited to throw things like this in people's face. We know about the prayer, we know. i just see the schwenke's point of view. I can see where they are coming from. Would you like it if you were in his shoes and bronco quetioned your ability to live the honor code because you were deciding to trip to notre dame? It would tick me off too, even if had had my "prayers answered". And who cares if he serves a mission. why do we have to go there? that is exactly what I am talking about. its ridiculous.

And michigan and alabama didn't make offers to phillips. if that happens things change, i guarantee it. in that case, I don't think its wise to say if you trip you lose out. Not when with programs like that. You recruit them the best you can hope they pick you. you don't just throw it in the garbage which is is what you will be doing if programs like that is who you are going up against.

Yes, and UW fans were wrong for doing so. Just because they did, does not make it right. And just because fans everywhere do it, does not make it ok for BYU fans, right?? Higher standard and all you guys hold BYU to applies to fans as well then, right?

reality is that BYU wil just be fine without him. High recruit, but no guarantee he pans out. Personally, I'd rather we got Heimuli. A strong DT can affect a game more than a DE. But we bailed on him already, unfortunately.

I dont' get the feeling that Mars holds himself to the same standards that he does others. Mars has surely always followed every prompting that he has received or never waffled after he has given his word.

I pulled this from a post over on TBS but nothing in the post was protected information and it was so well-stated that I had to be bring it over:

Must read if you want to know why Bronco pulled the scholly

It's long so just read the highlighted part if you want the quick version.

“I just got a call back from Notre Dame and they confirmed that the offer was made, so we’re going to fly up there tomorrow afternoon,” Mr. Schwenke said. “We’re excited. I know Kona is also excited. We’re absolutely excited about the events over the past couple days and we’re looking forward to coming over there and seeing the school, meeting the coaches, as well as some of the faculty members.

“The history of Notre Dame, and everything about the school, being a parent has us excited. I remember watching some of the old Notre Dame games from way, way back and to get the opportunity to get an offer from Notre Dame is something that is beyond words for myself, and I know I can speak for my wide as well. We’re just excited to come up there and visit and check out the campus and check out the school. I know Kona is very excited as well.”

“Based on the conversations that we’ve had with the coaches, they’re very gracious and very accommodating to us, and it will be very exciting to meet them face to face,” the Mr. Schwenke explained. “I don’t doubt there is a lot of sincerity in their voices and that they’re caring people that want the best for our son. There’s nothing that I sense from our conversations that would make me feel otherwise. I felt really god about the conversations I’ve had with the coaches thus far.”

http://byu.scout.com/2/941589.html

"I'm really excited about coming up to Notre Dame and seeing their school," Schwenke said. "I've been pretty interested since Notre Dame came down to our school and talked to me. I'm real excited to come up there and see the campus."

"I just heard from Manti (Te'o) and Roby (Toma) that Notre Dame is a great place, and the school is great up there and the academics are good. I just heard from them, and my dad was just telling me about Notre Dame and how great it is because he's been following them. I'm just excited to come check it out."

Now compare all of the quotes from up above with the ones down below. It starts to get really weird. The quotes on top happened before the quotes on bottom. Probably a couple of days between the two.

“We told Coach Mendenhall that Kona is 100 percent committed to BYU and that taking a trip to Notre Dame didn’t detract from his commitment, that he just wanted the opportunity to visit some friends,” informed Kona’s father McKay. “Kona has prayed about it and the answer he received was that BYU was the school he needed to sign with and I told Bronco that, so it’s hard for me to understand why he can’t take Kona’s word on this.”

“It’s an ugly side to BYU that we didn’t see until just this week and we’re extremely disappointed by all of this,” said McKay. “My son gave them his word and that still apparently wasn’t good enough. He wants to trip to Notre Dame and we’re going there because we believe that it’s not something that is disrespecting BYU by doing so. They told us that they would pull his offer if he goes to Notre Dame and hopefully they change their minds, but we don’t believe we’re doing anything wrong here. We were never told beforehand that we couldn’t trip to other schools if we wanted to keep our BYU offer, so them telling us so now that it’s so late doesn’t show a lot of trust in their part.”

“He still wants to go to BYU, even now, but he doesn’t feel that he should be treated this way by the coaches there,” summed up McKay regarding Kona’s mindset. “It’s truly an unfortunate thing, but all we can do is move on and decide between Notre Dame and Washington.”

Bronco aint no Dummy!!

Does that sound "committed to ANYONE out there?

Yeah, we bailed on him, in part because we were holding a scholarship for Schwenke, under the mistaken impression he could be trusted.

No but Central Michigan did, and guess who was the old coach at CMU but the new coach at Cincy? Yep. One and the same. It's almost a certainty that Phillips would have had an offer to the BCS #3 team in the country if he had tripped. But he didn't. As for Bama and Michigan, they probably were scared off by his size but that didn't stop them from seriously considering offering him. I'm convinced if they didn't have multiple RBs already committed they still would have too.

1 thing I am certain of is that this is far from over, and that things are happening behind the scenes we are unaware of. I expect that come Wednesday, we will get some truth. Until then, I an waiting to see what happens.

Treat the recruits like men and quit babying them. Then can get babied at Notre Dame and UW and be done playing football in time for finals every year. Yeah, the rule says they can change their mind at any time before signing day, but NCAA rules also allow drinking, porn, and extra-marital sex. We expect more here. I'm just glad this is all getting out of the way this recruiting year so it won't be a surprise to anyone in the future.

AMEN! Very well said, I completely agree.

You guys are unbelievable. you are saying that because he is tripping to nd he is probably going to drink, look at orn and have premarital sex and we are lucky that we don't have him because he probably would have done that stuff had he come to byu??? Where the hell is that logic coming from!!! how does him keeping his verbal commitment to byu in anyway suggest he can't commit to living the honor code? are you serious? If I were kona, if that was what the coaches were telling me, i wouldn't go there either.

i can't talk with people like that. You call that reasoning? Its this kind of thinking that makes people hate byu. it make me hate part of it. its so freaking lame.

Good grief, Johnny, Sno was making an analogy. He wasn't saying that Kona would do all those things. He was saying that just because it is within the NCAA rules, doesn't mean that BYU has to conform. If BYU only conformed to the NCAA minimum standard, it wouldn't be BYU, now would it?

I'm sorry, I'm just a villainizer. But what can I say, I do enjoy villainizing. I mean really, what else is better in life than to villainize? I just love to get my kicks out of making villains out of other folks.

If you are struggling to understand what my request was, this response in regards to Heimuli is a perfect example of it:

gmj81 His latest reaction to be left out in the cold makes it obvious he's been looking for a long time for evidence to provide his family that BYU is evil and not where he should be.

There are some that just take things too far anytime someone chooses not to go to byu. This is a perfect example of what i am talking about. I mean seriously? Is it really that obvious that Heimuli was obviously trying to prove to his family that byu is 'evil.' seriously? Wow.

This is the kind of crap that some of us get tired of when people don't choose byu.

I disagree. He attended Michigan's camp. It was his dream to play at Michigan. I don't want to take anything away from Phillips though. He is my favorite recruit this year.

Because he didn't encourage them, given that he was already committed to BYU.

Not the point. The point is that it was time to make his decision. This trip was very unfair to BYU and Bronco, and he had the right to ask for more.

Sad deal all of this. Kona, good luck with life man. BYU could end up wishing they had you BYU, but you certainly will miss BYU.

That's all I'm going to say about it.

Phillips- Welcome to the fold brother. Can't wait for you to rip it up.

And by the way. I think Kona will regret his decision. I really do. Its hard to understand what he is doing. I am not interested in being his lawyer. I just get tired of those who feel it is there job to hold others to their lofty ideals so strenuously and with such venom. His is a high school kid who screwed BYU. We all know it and are hur by it. I just don't see why you have to attack his character so vehemently. it obviously got on my nerves.

I cannot tell you how discouraging this whole incident has been for me. I was genuinely excited about Kona - and all the other recruits. I think I feel so affected - because I love Cougar Football so much - and I love to see them excel at the highest level. That can only happen with the highest quality people - athletically, personal charcter & morally.

I feel your pain. I feel the same way. I get too invested in this stuff. I need to take a deap breath so it doesn't affect me when I get home to spend time with my family. Kona is a good guy. I really like him and was looking forward to having him on the team. I still wish him luck with his decision. He made a mistake but the future is still bright for byu. we really don't need him. would have been nice to have him, but we don't need him. If he wasn't committed enough to not take the trip after byu asked him not to, i guess it just wasn't meant to be.

This kid had every right to de-commit and seek other offers.

BYU had every right to yank his scholarship.

The part that bugs me is the parents trying to spin this in their favor. Why can't they just say, "We wanted to check on some other once-in-a-lifetime offers and understand that it means de-committing to BYU for the time being." Whoa, honest and open. Can't have that in these United States.

I have no doubt BYU football will be okay with or without him.

I know Kona has made a mistake. Look @ all the potential Cougar Football players that went elsewhere - many times - many times it does not work out. UCLA & Olsen, USC & Kaveinga. etc. The list is extensive. The grass is NOT always greener on the other side!!!! It's alluring. It's attractive. It's NOT as it appears. I hope Heaps & some other recruits can call Kona & have some influence. I still feel strongly it truly is in his best interest.

Hey "Jonny-L" ... I dig your posts - their spirit - your insight & commitment. Having the personal knowledge & relationships that you do with these players makes it additionally painful for you to watch the bad choices. Keep us informed Brutha!!!
