OK, that's Bronco's generic answer. So I'm wondering from our esteemed panel of Cougar Corner experts ;) What do y'all think our needs are, and how are they addressed by this group of recruits?

filled needs:

1. linebacker - the strength of this class

(stout, keoshian, tautu, owens, vannoy, fua) - I expect that we might even see one of those running backs (moore, brown) converted to linebacker or strong safety in the future

2. running back (josh quezada, drew philips, algie brown, aj moore)

3. defensive tackle--- this is where we stole the most players (graham rowley, tank tuitama, jordan afo) - afo and tuitama were huge steals and will contribute early on the dline

4. offensive line (coach weber is not going to let the defense have tayo fabuluje, in fact I think tayo is the next great left tackle after reynolds is gone) blair tushuas is going to be a great center once he improves on his conditioning after that brutal knee injury, manu mulitalo, jordan black, tuni kanuch are all very solid players.

5. receiver (apo, philips... philips is the ideal slot receiver in this offense if he learns and embraces the position... and has hands... Apo is just the ideal receiver)

6. tight end (sampson is an andrew george type and helps build a nice relationship with pleasant grove (his dad is the coach... much like our relationship with bingham), and if alani fua gets a shot at tight end... he could be special there, I watched 2 OC Christian games and Fua absolutely wrecked havoc catching the ball... he also was awesome pass rushing, it'll be interesting to see where they use him, especially with Holt, Wilson, and Muehlman as tight ends)

7. special teams (we got a lot of guys in this class that can be on kickoff, punt, and the return teams... particularly philips who teamed with chambers is going to make a scary kickoff return tandem)

8. safety (kori gaines... a scott johnson clone that thrived in the top levels of georgia football... he's a football player plain and simple and will be a nice bridge player to create depth at free safety - jacob hanneman is a solid athlete with size, hands, and a love for BYU... his lone peak defense may have been the best in the state of utah in spite of the fact that only 2 guys got D1 scholarships off of it-- will go on mission 1st... he's the oldest boy in a large family so this might not be the last we hear this name (much like the collie name)

9. corner (jordan johnson - special athlete that will help with depth in the secondary)

10. quarterback -jake heaps

incomplete: Bronson Kaufusi... I initially thought he'd be the baddest defensive end in BYU history, but I have heard rumors that he eventually may be the baddest left tackle we've ever had. I guess we'll see, either way the dude is a freak of an athlete.

needs not addressed: immediate help at defensive end...

future depth at safety and corner...

guys coming back to the team:

garret nicholson is at salt lake community college and plans on being back in the fold soon

missions-- good news for the depth of our secondary

Famika Anae OL 6-5 260 Provo, Utah/Timpview HS

Tyler Beck LB 6-1 210 Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta HS

Austin Holt TE 6-6 230 South Jordan, Utah/Bingham HS

Austen Jorgensen LB 6-3 230 Mt. Pleasant, Utah/North Sanpete HS

Walter Kahaialii OL 6-3 320 Lahaina, Hawaii/Kamehameha-Maui HS

James Lark QB 6-2 219 St. George, Utah/Pine View HS

Devin Mahina TE/DE 6-6 225 Upland, Calif./Upland HS

Eathyn Manumaleuna DL 6-2 280 Anchorage, Alaska/Timpview HS

Marcus Mathews WR 6-4 200 Beaverton, Ore./Southridge HS

Jason Munns QB 6-5 244 Kennewick, Wash./Southridge HS

Jordan Smith WR 6-4 190 Spanish Fork, Utah/Spanish Fork HS

Manaaki Vaitai OL 6-3 300 Euless, Texas/Trinity HS

the all "thank goodness for missions player" is now Justin Sorenson... the kid leaves and Mitch Payne becomes a very productive kicker and Riley Stephenson might just leave BYU as the most productive punter in BYU history (with all due respect to Lee Johnson). As soon as Mitch graduates, we get Justin back, halleluah...

obviously the greatest attrition on either side of the ball was the front seven on defense, therefore the greatest need.we recruited some very good looking players there, but it's always hard to say if the incoming players are good enough to have any immediate impact. There are so many imponderables on any college FB team re how much the new guys will see the field, and with us that's even more so with guys returning from missions rotating back into the program, and how quickly they get back into game shape, etc.guys like Eathyn Manumaleuna[who made the huge block vs.UCLA in Vegas],and Devin Mahina, and possibly Famika Anae, etc. but i do think you have to like guys like Travis Tuiloma, whom some have raved about and who definitely flew under some recruiting services' radar, and Tayo Fabuluje, Zac Stout,Tuni Kanuch,Graham Rowley. These guys will probably initially give us depth and will play special teams mostly but who really knows?Who thought Ian Dulan would come in and get the time he did when he was a freshman? It appears that the guy who may have been ready to make the biggest early impact in our system up front would have been Bronson Kaufusi,we'll all just have to be happy that when he gets home we'll be seeing him possibly for four amazing years.

Of the LB guys who just came in, I expect Van Noy and Stout to contribute the most this season. I think Bronco wanted Van Noy for last year badly, and Coach Tidwell said he thought Stout could help this year. The issue with BYU is position mastery and Bronco is HUGE on that. The fact Van Noy is in now is huge in that regard.

I am also glad to get Eathyn Manumaleuna back. He was great as a freshman, and if he can get his fitness and strength back and add some weight, I think he makes a huge impact at NT this year. He can create pressure from the middle on pass plays, which we lacked last year.

Seeing the pipeline we have now, the players in camp and coming back from missions, if we get solid QB play this year, we will be pretty dang good. Our defense might be 1996 good with the secondary play we can expect back, if they stay healthy.

I'm cautiously optimistic about our defense next season. The biggest hole to fill will be replacing Scott Johnson's mind and leadership. Our D was Jekyll with him on the field the last two years, and Hyde in his absence.

If we can put a cerebral field general in at safety or mike this could be a great defense by the end of the season.

Manaaki Vaitai OL 6-3 300 Euless, Texas/Trinity HS

just noticed this kid is from the same HS as Ofa Mohetau, the extremely highly regarded Crowton recruit who never panned out,and eventually returned to Texas and did what?will he have any of the same motivational issues which Ofa had?I know there's no room for guilt by association, but I know nothing about this kid other than that his HS brought us one of the biggest busts of all time.anyone?

The kid is an RM. I think that proves he can hang in there and is willing to work. Plus, not sure we need him this year because we have a great starting 5 and depth in the O-line. I think our O-line will be a strength on this team, if they stay healthy this year.

My understanding is that T-Fab is a defensive line recruit, and there is no way Kaufusi will let him go to the O.

I'm pretty sure that Graham Rowley is going to play on the offensive line as well.

Rowley is leaving on a mission first so it will be a couple of years before we see him.

Anywyas who got the best class in the MWC? May i propose that we average the Rival, Scout and ESPN rankings. With a 22, 25 and 40 that comes out as 29. I think that would top any other team. If you can argue that ESPN is worthless thant using the two we get 31.

I am stoked to get Manumaleuna back. If he snaps back to pre mission form he will be a force again.

As for Kaufusi, from what he said and his dad said, he will be o-line. They see that as his future (NFL) per his dad and he accepted humbly (awesome that a kid takes his dad's honest opinion to heart).

From everything I have read and heard, Tayo is expected to be d-line, but that is always subject to change.

I am also eager to see how Anae turns out. I think however, that if I were part of the Anae clan (with that as the last name) I doubt I would name any of my sons Famika. That name carries so much weight in Hawaii and to the Anae clan that the expectations would be astronomical. A large legacy to live up to.

31? I think ESPN actually stands for Exceptionslly Stupid People Network, so I think it defines itself as worthless. :D

A 22 and a 25 would give us a 23.5 so we would have a top 25 recruiting class.

I have to agree with Bronco on this ranking thing that it is all poppycock. I don't care how many stars follow a kid's name. It means nothing until they get on the field and prove what they can do in college.

I look at Ohio State's QB and I see a kid that may have flourished at W.Virginia when they ran the spread, but at Ohio State he has struggled. They have tried to turn him into a true passer and it has not worked out yet. He has gotten better but is still nowhere close to what Craig Krenzel did. My point being that having the right person in the position is more important than having the most talented or "rated" player.

That is very true. What scottie lacked physically he more than made up for with smarts. This is my biggest concern. Rich is a freak and always giong to make tackles, but losing teo who had been trained and knew the defense was a big blow.

that and our dline are conerns for me. I think its possible if not likely that our linebacking core will be better this year than last.

I don't expect Famika to do much. I saw him play in HS and he wasn't anywhere near as good as any of the past Timpview O-Linemen. There is a chance that he could drastically improve, but I seriously doubt that will happen. He did not look strong or aggressive and I doubt a mission is going to help that. Good kid, but don't expect anything from him as a football player.

What ever happened to Matt Putnam. Two years ago he looked like he would start this last year 09'. He never really showed up. Was he injured? On Jaime's bad side? I figured he would be a real player and help us on the D-Line....?
