I wouldn't like it, but Hobbs is a gamer. Head to head he's got the job done 2x.

Whoopdie doo. I could win in a head to head matchup against Jimmer too if he didn't play.
touchy subject? ;)

I didn't mean jimmer specifically, just that Hobb's team got er done against BYU 2x. And against a number of good teams. Question is, could UNM have beat BYU with furriousCougar playing in the place of Hobbs? Kidding bro.

Sure, but I have no problem whatsoever declaring that BYU wins by 5+ if Jimmer plays.

It's all conjecture at this point, but I totally agree. I'll take it further and say that if Loyd plays the whole game BYU wins by 10+. Score would have been +8 BYU at half and then BYU cruises in the second half.

Why yes, yes I think BYU would win if a Furious Cougar was playing on the court. It wouldn't matter the side, because of course it would be a cougar. It would probably eat most of the UNM players before they could do anything about it, and it would be easy street from there for BYU.

...oh you meant me...well yes, in that case BYU would still win, because if I were playing in place of Hobbs, you can bet your bottom dollar I would be throwing that game for NM.

My wife was with me at her first game this year, doesn't know much about basketball, but about ten minutes into the first half, she says, "I don't like 45." "Why" "Because every time he gets the ball, he has to shoot."

On the other hand, she loved Loyd's performance. and about the Cougarette's half time performance, she said, "I liked some parts of it, but other parts had a lot of stripper moves in it. Where are these girls going to end up?" Not that either of us knows what stripper moves are

Hey, I don't want to blame the refs but it's basically a given that the home team gets the majority of the calls throughout college basketball. So I just expect what's good for one to be good for all. I'm tired of the star treatment that has filter it's way down from the pro ranks and yet our star(s) don't get any of it.

I'll wait to pass judgement on the refs until I get to watch the tape, but from my vantage point in the MC, there were some pretty inconsistent calls.

Other than that, BYU can only blame themselves for letting their perimeter guys get hot. I mean, how do you let Martinez and McDonald get hot like that?

I have no problem with the shot that JT took. 7 times out of 10, he would make that one with as open as he was. And if he had made it, the crowd (sucky as it was the majority of the night) would have erupted essentially ending the game. Fans love to jump on JT and usually I'm one that questions his decision-making but when he sets his feet he's as good a shooter as we have and his feet were set on that shot. I just wish we there are the end we would have driven it in and drawn contact to try to put some points on the board when the clock is stopped. Loyd had been amazing all night... I wish he would have slashed in there a couple more times to finish the game.

Then either your wife has dislexia or you're fibbing because JT took two shots and made both of them in the first ten minutes of the 1st half. His final 1st half stats were 3 for 5. Certainly not what you're accusing him of. Look, we all know fans love to celebrate JTs big shots but jump all over him every time he misses a shot. Most of that is due to his own poor record of decision-making in the past. But this year, he has really stepped up to help the team out and put his pride down for the better of the team. He had one poor pass that resulted in a turnover today but other than that I can't complain too much about his play. I can't really even complain about him the last half of the season.

I expect you're wife is like mine. She doesn't know much about the game either but yells at JT whenever he misses regardless of whether it was a "good" shot or not. I expect she picked that up from me more than anything else from years past when JT just heaved up every ball that came to him but again he's played a lot better this year and deserves some credit from the fans. I'm afraid I've conditioned my wife to react negatively to any shot JT takes though and now sometimes when she yells, it only ends up embarrassing me.

And JT wasn't the only one who left their shooters open. But how the TEAM continued to leave their shooters open is definitely what I think killed us in the second half.

Pretty low scores across the board this week, as you may have imagined. New Mexico shooting 50% from field goal range and 43.5% from long probably had a lot to do with it. That, and I doubt many people picked Loyd (only one "L") to lead the team in scoring, for Hartsock to lead the team in assists, and for Emery to lead the team in rebounds.

Winner- ABYUFAN with 34 points. Congrats.

Next up: @ Utah on Wednesday, then @ TCU on Saturday.

P.S. I thought we got good play from a bunch of players.

Loyd had the game of his life, all in the 2nd half.

J.T. had a very good game, mostly in the first half though.

Emery played quiet but did a good job everywhere but scoring.

Hartsock played solid.

Miles came out strong to start the 2nd half.

Davies had some bright points.

Haws was up and down.

Abouo looked ready to help, but didn't do very much.

Jimmer was noticeably lacking in the first half, I couldn't figure it out.

TEAM defense was pretty ugly yesterday.

About JT's shot, I was just waiting for him to get the ball after the altercation with Hobson. I figured he would shoot the first three that he could and miss because he was still fired up. Turned out exactly like that but it was a good shot and it's too bad that he missed it.

Game was tight all the and it really came down to 2 things. The first is the NM hit every big 3 they needed in the last 8 minutes. They were clutch. They also passed the ball really well and found the open player. Good teams do that.

The 2nd thing is that BYU just flat out got beat in the paint. The UNM bigs were more athletic, made more plays and really contained our bigs. Our best player in the paint down the stretch was Loyd, and he is our smallest guy. Hs speed was something amazing to watch. Once he gets better and driving and dishing it, he will be a terror.

Bottom line: UNM just made more shots. We had good looks by JT and Haws late, but missed both, and Hartsock got blocked going to the hoop when he should have pulled up from 6ft. BYU had its chances, just could not get it done.

In a game like this (tourney atmosphere) it's gotta be Abuou on the floor. I don't care who he replaces, he absolutely has to be out there in big games. We need his athleticism and rebounding. Hopefully next year we can get the same reliability out of Davies but he takes too many dumb fouls. They got burned way too many times after we had a 5 point lead at the end of the game and Hartsock had to cover Hobson--that will never work. We need our best athletes to play D because at a certain point these games cease to be about running and gunning and turn into half-court execution wars. We won't be able to get 30 transition points in March.

You sure? In a "tourney atmosphere" game he played eight minutes and had three fouls and all of one rebound and it was offensive and the Cougs problem was keeping the Lobos off the offensive glass. And it was his foul with 7:26 left, when BYU was up 68-63 that led to UNM getting that key offensive board that sparked their 20-12 run to end the game.

I agree that Abouo should play more and likely will next year. And I further think it he is one of our best defenders and strongest rebounders. He's one of the few guys on the team that goes up and GETS the ball. But yesterday's game was a poor example to be using to point to his effectiveness and benefit.

I think your response is pretty accurate. Her impression was not based on whether he made the shot, but that he was bulling through and gonna take the shot no matter what. And there were a lot of people around us going 'dang it' when he'd shoot and 'oh' when he'd make it. and I thought too his missed three near the end was an ok shot to take, he was in position and open.

Hmmm...and if I recall correctly Abuou was then yanked from the game and no one left in even bothered to box their man out on the missed free throw. I see your point, but one could easily argue had Abuou been left in we would have secured that rebound.

Abouo did NOT have a good game against New Mexico. At all. His foul that cancelled Loyd's dunk was ticky-tack, but it may also have been the play to cost us a win.

Yes, and he could have also easily then "fought" for a rebound and been whistled for another foul. I didn't get to see the game, I could only listen. But I do agree that BYU really could have used a normally rebounding Abouo because, like I said, he is one of the few Cougars who goes and gets the ball. It was something he did against SDSU in both games and something no one did in either game against UNM.

I'm not sure what the issue is, but it's been 4 straight years where our seniors have not improved from the previous year. I was banking on Miles getting it together, but bottom line he's a mediocre big man with good defensive skills but no motor, and zero confidence in his offensive game.

JT has not had as many opportunities to lose games and he's been great off the bench, but his game hasn't improved much.

L-Mo just hasn't been used much (injury etc.)

same goes for Cummard last year - little improvement ....

We still have a good enough team to make a run, but they need to find that team that went down to Arizona, beat Utep without Jimmer, etc.

I'm hoping beyond all hope that next year our guys will improve (jackson, jimmer, charles, lloyd, davies, hartsock, etc.) or we're going to have one hell of a time with the ever improving top of our conference; even Wyoming and CSU will be improved. If they stay the same (which is still a solid team) we're going to have trouble making a sub 7-8 seed next year.

I think having Collinsworth return from a mission, and his little bro coming in too, helps us improve. Let's hope Collinsworth comes back from Oz hungry and ready to play, because he will get the chance.
