" Heaps is looking to do something unprecedented in BYU football history — become the first Cougar true freshman QB to open a season as the starter. Considering his competitive nature and reports that Heaps loves to spend time in the film room, there's the sense that he did not complete high school early and arrive at BYU early to spend his first year redshirting or being relegated to the role of high-profile backup... his teammates and coaches have been more than willing to talk about the freshman phenom.

"I thought he would have a rude awakening this spring at the (Division I) level," said offensive lineman Matt Reynolds. "But it's been just the opposite. It's been me who has had the awakening that he really is a great quarterback."

"Obviously, we all know he's an amazing football player," Lark said. "You can see that when he comes out on the field. What people don't know is he's a good kid. We respect him. He's down to earth."

It's not over. I think it's between 2 QB's. But, between Riley & Jake - the race is active & very alive. It's great competition.

I disagree. I think Bronco is CREATING competition, and the sense that Jason Munns might swoop in and steal the job, in order to push heaps to keep working all summer long. Munns will be more rusty than Lark, so that might not work out so well for him. I expect Heaps to be the starter. And having said that, I also expect Nelson to be used in situations and get a series occasionally to mix things up.

I'm so glad somebody brought this topic back up. Partially because we need something to talk about, but partially because it reminds me of this:

If it's not about BYU, if it's not about this team and this place, they won't start," he said. "That would be the most important criteria. I don't care how good they are, or who they are, or if they're the best player out there. If it isn't about the team, they're not going to play. They know that. Secondly, if it isn't about the team, they'll transfer. We understand the stakes in that case. I've been there.

......Given that context, it's pretty apparent that Doman was speaking about Heaps. If it's not a concern (if your 'best' player is a unifier/team player), why would Doman make this comment?

I have absolutely no insight, and not a whole lot of investment in anything other that what is best for the cougars. I went back and read the article to see if I could tell who Doman was talking about, or why he would make that comment. And I couldn't make the connectin to any specific player. And when I read it I naturally thought about a more senior player who maybe has been thinking for the last couple of years that he would finally get the position he had been waiting for, only to see it go to a newer, younger guy. That, to me, would be the bigger test of fortitude than a Freshmand being told to wait his turn. That is the guy more likely to leave the team, if you ask me.

I love to hear the talk of Heaps spending time in the film room. This wasn't something we heard Max Hall doing. I seem to recall following the 08 bowl game that the team didn't watch much film at all. that Hall never even looked at the film of the Utah debacle. QBs leard by watching film. Some QBs can't get enough of it. You want to know why Peyton Manning is the best QB in the NFL? It's because even between series he's looking at film - albeit still photos - of defensive formations. You watch film and then learn from it and then apply it and you become great. If you have talent.

It sounds more to me like he was talking about how Lark was before his mission. The only guy who has had issues this year has been Van Noy.
