JC Commit. Can play this year (has 3 to play 2). Joins BYU for this Fall camp.

I smell a redshirt for this kid, and for either Eason or Aguirre. That leaves Buckner as a back up, along with whichever of Eason or Aguirre do not RS. Unless injuries force guys to play.

I stumbled across an article written in February about BYU's recruiting from 2006 to the 2010 class. It discusses each and gives a brief rundown. Many names I had forgotten, but who may be seeing the field next year. Thought it would be fun to review then. remember, was originally posted in February, so the comments are dated. If you have details to add on players, please do and let's talk some football!! Fall camp opens in about a month.

I am pretty concerned that Kariya and DiLuigi are at the top of the RB depth chart. Really concerned about a lot of positions. Hard to see BYU keeping their 10 win streak alive this year with the schedule the way it is. Hope they prove me wrong.

I don't see why.

Kariya's blocking and backfield receiving led us to a win over Oklahoma without Unga.

DiLuigi had more yards per carry than Harvey did.

Quezada may surpass him overall given time.

And we thought all was lost after C Brown graduated and Unga emerged as the new RB yet to be tested workhorse. That's what is great about college football is the talent shines when the opportunity presents itself.

What will make our running game successful is the big uglies blowing up the defensive front line, letting our RBs get into the secondary more often than not.

Kariya had a miserable time running the ball against Oklahoma. Just because he had 2 or 3 nice catches for gains doesn't mean he's a long term answer at RB. It was obvious to me, observing our RBs last year, that there was a significant drop-off in skill between Unga and the others. Now I don't know much about Quezada, I hope he's a world beater. But your arguments that we'll be fine at RB are unconvincing to me.

You haven't explained with us returning JJ DiLuigi-who had more yards per carry than Unga last year, behind an O-line that will be stronger this year, WHY we won't be fine.

Sure I did. I said that there was a significant drop-off in skill level between Unga and the others last year. Are you telling me that Kariya and DiLuigi are NFL material like Unga obviously was?

JJ may not be a NFL RB, But Harvey may not be either- many are still projecting him as a FB.

So, if the skill-level drop from Unga to DiLuigi was so huge, why did he have less yards per carry? Or was it just Unga's lack of speed compared to DiLuigi?
R

I shouldn't have to tell you Mars, that there can be a lot of factors in a RBs average yards per carry over the course of the season. Was DiLuigi playing at meaningful times? Was he playing against first team defenses? Was there a smaller sample as DiLuigi got less carries? I don't know the answers to those questions. I do think that Unga was a much better running back than DiLuigi last year, and I think he would have been this year.

This is obviously purely based on opinion, though I think that most would agree with it, including BYU's coaching staff.

It's not like JJ had 3 carries last year. He ran the ball 45 times (and had 22 catches as well). And he still got far less playing time that he deserved, IMO. He still has two years left to be the man though, and with his speed and our O-line, with Quezada coming on strong, I'm not worried at all. Some people thought we couldn't replace Curtis Brown either. You'll see soon enough.

I really hope you're right. I've been a big DiLuigi supporter since he signed but I just have not been impressed with him on the field. I believe he has had ball security issues as well.

One thing I will say about DiLuigi and Kariya being in the game, is that even if they struggle to run the ball, they are both good out of the backfield. BYU can fall back on throwing the ball all over the place and be successful. This is assuming that our Quarterback can get the job done as well.

Jay Drew just blogged about the BYU depth chart. It was very vague at certain positions.

Under quarterback on the offensive depth chart, junior Riley Nelson is listed first, but then it says or freshman Jake Heaps, or sophomore James Lark, or freshman Jason Munns.

At wide receiver, there's no clear leader listed. O'Neill Chambers "and" Spencer Hafoka are listed at one spot; McKay Jacobson "and" Luke Ashworth are listed at the other.

At tight end, it's the same "or" situation as quarterback. Mike Muehlmann is listed first, followed by Devin Mahina and then Richard Wilson.

The inside linebacker positions are also up in the air. Shane Hunter, Austen Jorgensen or freshman Zac Stout are listed at Mike, while Brandon Ogletree or Aveni Leung-Wai are listed at Buck.

Robbie Buckner or Lee Aguirre is listed as the backup to Brian Logan at field corner.

Travis Uale or Landon Jaussi is listed as the backup to Steven Thomas at free safety.

Terence Brown is listed as the starting center, backed up by Houston Reynolds.

Bryan Kariya and J.J. DiLuigi are listed as the starting running backs.

I think this is really fluid. If Kaveinga plays, things change fast. DeQuan Everett was not listed yet, so he could work his way in still. Or Bradley could switch to safety. So I guess I am saying that the 2-deep is pretty much worthless, but does give us an idea of what Bronco is thinking with the QB position--up in the air.

I have a feeling that Collin Keoshian is going to be a factor this season too. His athleticism, size, smarts and work ethic are going to be too hard to keep off the depth chart.

Tay-fab, Tuiloma, and Rowley could all be in the 2 deep by seasons end on the Dline.

As I reported here a week ago, DB Lee Aguirre is blue-shirting this year. His academics are poor.

RB Masi Tuitama is losing the year to academic struggles. He has already used his blue-shirt season.

Mike MLB Austen Jorgensen (recently returned from a mission) is reportedly doing very well in off-season workouts.

Buck MLB Aveni Leung-Wai suffered an ankle injury in spring, and seniors report that his ability to play has dropped off steeply ever since then.

WLB Jordan Atkinson is suffering from post-surgery issues and may blue-shirt in 2010, opening the door wide for Kyle Van Noy.

Since recovering from injury, Houston Reynolds has jumped from 5th to 2nd at the Center position and will be making his case to start over heavy-set Terrance Brown this Spring camp. T. Brown can play Guard or Tackle as well.

Finally, RM DL Eathyn Manumaleuna is officially listed as a DE, instead of a NT.

On byucougars.com it lists "Juice" Quesada as jersey #2? But Cody Hoffman is #2 as well. Is that a mess up on their part?
