I have to disagree with you Kitic. I was just talking to a friend the other day about how we tried to get into but just couldn't. It's just not our thing. Sure, we turned it on for a few moments here and there, especially while the US was playing, but other than that it's just not an attention grabber.
Did you know who was playing? Did you know who any of the players were? Did you know where the teams were in the standings?
When I watch a BYU game or an RSL game, I know who each player is. I don't need the announcer to tell me who wears #60 or #37 or #2. I know who they are. What position they play. How good they are/should be. I know where BYU is in the standings and rankings. I know why the game is/isn't important. I have a reason to care if they win/lose.
Same with RSL.
I'd argue that you didn't know those things. You didn't have a reason to care. Being a fan is about caring. Too many sports fans are giving soccer a chance, without giving themselves a reason to care. If you don't know about the team, its players, its position in the standings, it's tough to care.
I think too many of them think, well I was entertained by the national team, so I'll tune into the Toronto FC vs FC Dallas game. But they don't care about either team. They don't know who any of the players are. They know who Donovan and Dempsey are but not Breck Shea, Ugo Ihemelu, Dax McCarty or Dewayne De Rosario. Then the game is 1-0 or 0-0 or only has that ONE moment I was talking about earlier. But because they haven't gotten to the point of caring for one of those teams, that moment is lost to them.
Getting into soccer can be a long process. I brought a friend of mine to an RSL game in 2006. In the middle of the 2nd half he stands up and yells "BORING" at the top of his lungs. He got lots of laughs and some jeers and sneers. But to be honest, he was right. The game did stink. He came to a few games the last few years. This past year he bought season seats and couldn't wait for the first game. He now cares if RSL wins or loses. He's into soccer, because he cares.
