There are so, so many reasons soccer is a terrible PROFESSIONAL sport...
1- Ties. Any game where hours later you can walk away without seeing anyone win or lose is just flat-out awful. Communist. Anti-American.
2- Low-scoring. 1-0 games are plentiful, and plenty boring. No boring sport will ever be widely accepted in America, or anywhere else with good taste and better options (like college football!).
3- Flopping. The antithesis of sport/competition. Disgusting. Unwatchable.
4- The Rules. The game continues on for a "mystery period" after the time runs out, but we have no idea how much time that is, and neither do the players. WTF.
5- The Refs. They can call a penalty on a team that takes away a goal, without saying who it on or what they did. WTF?
The NFL has ties. So the NFL must be communist and un-American. And until the late 90's CFB also had ties.
NHL games are low scoring. Since when do you need scroing to have great action. See baseball, hockey, and the NFL for details.
Flopping? See the NBA. Seriously.
There is no mystery period. At the end of each half, a game ref who has tracked the stoppages holds up a board for all to see how much "stoppage" time gets added. The on field ref is bound to follow that, by the rules of the game. No mystery.
Refs. The argument you just made applies to the NFL and NBA as well. Refs can actually influence things, and sometimes badly. Happens in sports--even with replay. Although if you want to rip soccer, rip it for not using technology to review huge plays. I can get behind that.
If you do not like it, that is fine. So what. I feel that way about baseball, and loved it as a kid and played in HS. Now it bores me. Just my opinion.
Ties in the NFL very rare, and the last time I checked Hockey is the least watched of the major pro sports leagues in America (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL).
I understand your point about the NFL also being deceptively low scoring, but how many football games end with 0-0 or 7-0? Not very many, while that's a typical scoring in Soccer. If most soccer games had at least 4-6 total goals, it would be a different story.
The flopping in the NBA doesn't even come close to Soccer. For one, my biggest beef are the fake injuries. When people flop in the NBA, at least they get back up. Two, you'll only see maybe 2-3 bad flops per game in the NB. In the World Cup I saw 2-3 bad flops
per minute! I understand the refs can and do influence games in all sports, but it's fact that refs don't even have to say what the call was or who it was on that bothers me. Can you imagine if the winning touchdown in the superbowl or BCS Champion game was called back and then the ref just walked away with saying what the call was?
