As usual TX, you couldn't be more wrong.

I was a huge opponent, yes, of people who were dishing out crap about BYU receiving an invite to the Big 12 this summer... that was never even close to happening, and never did happen. I was also particularly merciless towards those who were handing out guarantees, or near guarantees - ex: "I am about 95% certain..." or "I would be shocked if ______ didn''t happen by ______"

Ever since the independence thing came up I've been pretty open-minded to it, even though I've stated several times (as you've conveniently failed to mention) that if I had to bet money on it, I'd bet that BYU doesn't announce going indy this year.

Seriously, I know I embarrassed you a few times over on rumorboard, but no need to hold a personal vendetta, especially when it leads you to post crap as untrue as what's quoted above.

LOL

Yes, if I just had my a** handed to me, I'd probably have a similarly elementary response. Keep it up there, prince debater.

I always thought Italics was the one that was against independence and always attacked people claiming to have sources. With that in mind he must be pretty sold on this to make such a complete 180.

Thanks for the confidence, BUT - as post above - I've actually been pretty open-minded on this Indy thing all along, for difference reasons.

The whole "Big 12 invite by _____" was what I ridiculed the most.

Maybe I am just remembering your posts regarding the Big 12 invite and not independence. I apologize if I am.

I for one am in your camp Italics, maybe not with the whole September 1 thing but I do believe that BYU is strongly and aggressively investigating independence. There are a couple of significant developments that I think point towards independence. 1. Utah being gone. BYU is no longer tied down. 2. The new broadcast facility. If BYU has no intention on using it for athletics then how come it was the Athletic Director that explained what it was to the media?

*Pure speculation on my part* --->As for the Big 12 I think that BYU can use its new broadcast facility as incentive for the Big 12 to invite them. They have the capability of 4 HD channels. 1. BYUTV 2. BYUSports. That leaves 2 channels. BYU can tell Texas that we will show them how to do it and that Texas can use one of our channels and our equipment until they get up and running. That would allow Texas to have their own network next year rather then 3,4,5,6+ years down the road. And as for the 4th channel, maybe the BIG 12 network can use it or something. Again this is pure speculation.

Stop it, you're killing me! Seriously made my day. You have a very low bar for having my anything handed to me. I'm guessing you went to an alternative school where they didn't use grades and you got a crocodile in spelling.

So now you've gone from completely ignoring the fact that I just 100% disproved everything you said... to throwing out "I'll bet in school you _____" insults? Keep cracking it it. We're all learning a thing or two about wit.

I would love to practice law, but only for the plaintiff, in a place where Italics' "proof" and "arguments" would sufficient to carry the burden of persuasion. Probably not sufficient here in Texas, though. ;)

I am not well known on this board, and have no interest in the arguments between posters. However, I do know Italics from a different board, and his response to the expansion rumors has been much like mine. The Big XII rumors were false and reactionary. If the desire to change things up is just because Utah did, then it is a short-term solution. I don't know that a short-term reaction is best, even if it temporarily gets us in a conference with Texas and Oklahoma. If the Big XII can get stabilized and united, then great- let's go.

There is some substance to the independence rumors, and while I can't speak for Italics or his sources- I have reason to consider the independence rumors more than I did the almost defunct Big XII rumors. If BYU goes independent, it will be with a long-term vision in mind. If they go independent, they will also need fan support, so we need to be open minded about it.

As I said, I can't speak for Italics or his sources- and I doubt independence is announced this month or this year. My point is that independence only happens with the dominoes in place and homework done, and one of the biggest ? marks will be our reactions and support. If an announcement is made, whatever it is, I plan to back it 100%.

Actually, he's already built an out into his rumor--while his direct sources are infalliable, he has already indicated he is unsure of how reliable their sources are. So, when Sept. 1 comes and goes without any movement, he just shifts the blame two degrees away and keeps clean.

It's Rumor-Mongering 101: You take a fixed date that is already the deadline for something (any school leaving the MWC has to notify the MWC by Sept 1st of the year previous to avoid penalties), and you take something everyone is opining and conjecturing about and boldly assert you have inside info that X will happen by that date. If you gamble right and win, you have lucked into credibility. If nothing happens, you can still claim your sources are legit, but their sources are not, thus maintaining an aura of insiderness.

Ah, but you see, I have chosen to hang his credibility on this site on the truthfulness of these rumors.

Actually it has given me an idea for a new user ranking while I will probably roll out in a few days...

Do we get to stone Italics or throw him into a pit of fire if Sept. 1 passes and no sign manifests itself?

Careful. Not everything regarding the Big XII was false or reactionary. What bothered me most weren't the people doubting unknown posters (and mostly rightfully so). Rather, I was bothered by the large vocal minority of chicken littles on cougarboard that were adamant that Holmoe and BYU had done nothing to improve our station and refused to entertain the notion that he had done anything in pursuit of that end. I'm mostly talking about the "smoke/fire" folks. It bothered me because there actually have been talks and negotiations and I was upset that so many refused to believe Holmoe was doing his job because they saw no smoke.

- "Oh, I have to think of something else?"

Where is McGregor when we need him?

Italics is not the only one parading around the idea of independence by September 1 and is not the only one staking their reputation on the matter. In fact, when one reads the thoughts of those who say this announcement is imminent, the logic and analysis of the facts are quite persuasive. They almost speak for themselves.

Some of you may have heard Hans interviewing Val Hale a few weeks back about BYU and going independent...and it was there that I first heard that ESPN had an interest in signing the Cougars to a tv contract about a decade ago. From reputable sources, that interest appears to still be legit - if not enhanced by some of BYU's broadcasting capabilities.

Have you noticed the changes and restructuring being done to the BYU coach's show? If ESPN agrees to broadcast, say, 6 games per year...then BYU can contract out the remaining broadcasts to KSL locally and BYUTV across the globe. The bottom line would be a huge increase in revenue, full use of the broadcast facilities, a stronger brand name, and much better exposure nationally and most importantly for those interested in BYU sports.

For me, I take this as food for thought...but if ESPN is a willing partner, independence by September 1 is far too logical to be summarily dismissed.

The only way I favor independence is it I get all BYU games on TV. I don't care if it Versus, CBS-C, ESPN, or BYUTV.

Unless times have changed, previous administrations have declared independence financially unviable.

I've kicked this around in my head a bunch too, for I too have heard that so many times that I believe it to be true. But I wonder if they were saying that because of the unwritten agreement with Utah, and independace would have had to come with supporting the Utes in some financial way as well? And With Utah taking the first step out of the agreement we are now able to go it alone?

Anyway I guess we'll see in 4 weeks eh?

I think you hit the nail on the head with this post. In my opinion Utah was the only thing holding BYU back from seriously pursuing independence. That tie has been severed. BYU has the best broadcast facility in the west. Seems like some wheels are in motion to me.

I just love, love, love the idea that we might leapfrog Utah in Revenue and Bowl possibilities because they decided they had enough of our 'agreement' after years of us sticking around for THEM. And then for the Frutes to post crap all over the Trib and DNews about us being a mid-major, and how they've moved on to better things after this "favor" we've done them.

The idea that we could THEN emerge victorioius based on their own misteps is a little too awesomely in-your-face for me to handle. (And I'm not even sure such an agreement ever did exist really) But reality is rarely so painful to your Frenemies.

Look I know this is all just rumors, but what would be the purpose of going independent? To get a sweeter TV contract, equaling more TV revenue? Where would we go for basketball, baseball, etc? I doubt the MWC would have us.

IIRC The WAC has said they would take our other sports.
