Stephenson has had 7 of 11 PATs blocked in live situations.

How can a guy who punts and kicks off well be so bad at PATs?

Classic line from Mendenhall, "Most likely I'll be to the point where I ask anyone on our team if they kicked in high school; seriously."

Guess we'll just have to score an extra touchdown each game.

The first step is admitting you have a problem.

And people thought Payne was bad. If we don't have Payne back, we will have to go for 2 on every touchdown.

At practice he wasn't even making it over the offensive linemen. Looks like we are going to have a lot of going for 2 and going for it on 4th down for the first part of the season.

This title was funny because the first thought that came to my mind was, uh, yeah, you are just realizing that!! We have had a problem for years now. As bad as it was with Payne, its even worse without him. I am telling just go to the soccer team and ask them to tryout. we need a decent kicker. pat are supposed to be guaranteed points.

While I relish my position as the fithqb, I might just have to become the third kicker.

Stephenson was money time at PAT's in high school. Never saw him miss a single one (though I am sure he missed a bit). Its really surprising to me that that he is having these issues.

Reminds me of that Crowton year when we ran out of deep snappers for a game or two so we couldn't punt.

WHAT THE FREAK!

I honestly think this should not be an issue!

Laces out! Even Ave Ventura knows that shiz!

The women's soccer team has been practicing. Maybe they can send someone over to get the ball up faster.

I remember reading a story in SI about a high school football coach who never punted and always went for 2. if our kicker is only 4 of 11 on PATs, I'm sure we could convert the 2pt conversion better or at as good as that. Would make for a interesting season

Am I missing something with Payne? I only thought he was going to be out 2 weeks or has that changed? If he comes back the PAT's will be fine, now field goals will be a different story but he has been pretty good with the PAT's.

Payne has a sprained ankle let's not jump off the bandwagon and kill ourselves here. if it were the middle of the season payne would still be kicking with a cortisone shot.

A few thoughts:

Payne has a mild ankle sprain and should be good to go in a week or so.

IIRC, high school kickers use a kicking tee for PAT's and FG's. That may be a reason why Stephenson can't get them off the ground.

I wish Todd Watkins were around. He was his Juco team's placekicker-and did very well.

I've never heard of this. We never used a kicking tee in my high school games

I never really had a problem with Payne. Now, kickoffs out of bounds bothered me, but he was very consistent with PATs and was an average field goal kicker (not great outside 40 yards). Not as good as his brother, but I think he's the all-time points leader in the MWC (which means BYU scores lots of TDs I guess).

I'm pretty sure Utah high school teams use them (or at least did in 2000).

Our kickers used a 2-inch placekicking block like this one: http://www.wizardkicking.com/images/wz-13.jpg" alt="" loading="lazy" style="max-width:100%">

I promise we'll be fine. There is a fantastic kicker, best I've seen, he's going to the try-outs and he's got the strongest and most accurate leg I've ever seen. He reminds me of Ethan Pochman.

Over on Cougar Board someone said we should have Riley take over the 2-point conversion offense instead of kicking the XPs.
C
Cougs_Rule
its a trade off. He has a low trajectory (obviously) that works great on his three step kick-off method. I will take his solid kick-offs. we can find somebody for PAT's

Wrubell posts specifically about Payne tonight. For all the message board flack, he has been pretty good for a BYU kicker for his career.

Clearly we're one-deep at that position right now. I could see Nelson being in charge of the 2-point game. Interesting.
