By a while ago, you mean on Tuesday during the MWC presidents conference call, in which BYU formally announced their issues with the TV deal and expressed the point they are exploring all options. As in 3 days ago. And it has all gone down that fast. But BYU has not formally left, just announced that they are looking.

When did we give notice that we were leaving? I am under the impression that if BYU says nada for the next few weeks they are and have been in the MWC. Is there something official from BYU out there that I missed?

BYU actually gave notice to Hair and the MWC that they were leaving awhile ago... I don't think you need me to explain to you what happened from there. I'm pointing out that if BYU had signed/agreed to staying in the WAC for the next 5 years, they would technically be required to may the $5 million for cutting things off.

BYU has NEVER given notice they are leaving the MWC. This would be the single biggest sports news story of the month. Maybe of the summer.

BYU has never made it a secret that they are exploring all of their options, but that is a far cry from giving notice they were leaving.

BYU never officially left. Thanks for pointing that out to me, here I thought I had missed the press conference... nice to know it didn't really exist!

But there is substantial evidence (like the mock 2011 schedule) to show that this thing was a heartbeat away from happening. Obviously a lot of crazy crap has gone down since then. All I was initially saying was that BYU has not signed any 5-year agreement with the WAC - do you honestly want to argue that?

Craig-O,

I am completely, 100% behind you. If concessions are granted (for example, the ability to broadcast home games, espn contract, whatever...) staying in the MWC is absolutely the smart thing to do.

Those who are saying "we need to get out of the MWC no matter what" are acting on pure emotion. To you I say, grow up. Forget about who screwed us or how much of an a$$ that Hair Thomspon is. If we get concessions, staying in the MWC is HANDS down the BEST option for us at this point.

Saying that the WCC is a decent option is absolutely absurd. Aren't you all sick and tired of being ridiculed for playing in a crappy conference? And yet you'd take a crapier one just because some PEONS like Fresno and Nevada screwed our plans??

I like this possible 12 team conference (especially with a Houston add). We get a tiny bit of depth, some increased competition. We get to POUND the very Nevada and Fresno teams that we now hate. I think it would really step up the excitement of this conference. But seriously, some of you would rather run away to the WCC? I'm astonished by the ingnorance and immaturity of this gut reaction. WCC is such a joke/step backwards...really, this just baffles me. Enough said.

Craig-O, you're 100% right. You and I and those who aren't so short-sighted can rest knowing that the BYU AD & Company aren't juvenile enough to act on emotion. Assuming we get some decent concessions...we're staying in the MWC for the time being, and I, personally, am excited for the future matchups and new rivalries.

Go Cougs!

Wow, Cougarfurr, you are a dick, plain and simple. Telling people to "grow up" because they have a different opinion than you? The only other sport that matters is mens b-ball, which is a far cry from football and a sport in which the WCC is quite strong. They don't have football, so no one would "ridicule" us for playing there. No one ridicules Gonzaga for playing basketball there, why would they pick on us? Sure, I think it would be better and easier to stay in the MWC if concessions are granted, but if someone sees it differently than me I'm not going to be a condescending ass about it.

It's not the difference of opinion, it's the basis for that opinion..which is simply anger toward the conference/teams/commissioner or "oh look at what other teams are saying about us on MWC Board". Sorry, maybe "grow up" isn't appropriate. How about "cool out...think straight".

While football and basketball are the most thrilling sports for me, I still have a great interest in our other sports teams. We may not see a positive bottom line impact from those sports...but they are contributing to our Athletics as a whole. We need them to succeed and have tough competition. I'd also disagree with "quite strong" as a way to describe the WCC. Gonzaga, fine. St. Mary's..decent. I don't know where you're from, maybe somewhere within the reach of the WCC conference...all I know is that anywhere east Utah, the WCC is a joke. I have literally been met with laughs from all of my co-workers/friends when I mentioned the possibility of us playing bball in the WCC.

Generally enjoy your posts, Schmoe, and your hard-core fan attitude....shocking to hear you straight up call me a dick...whatever man, relax.

I agree that going from an almost sure-bet AQ MWC a few months ago.....to losing yewtah...and then moving non-football sports to the WCC would be nauseating. BUT, what if we join the WCC in all non-football sports and go independent in football for 1 or 2 years.....and then join the Big 12 in football only, thus bypassing the Sunday sports issue completely. Would you take that?

I'm not saying that would ever happen (about a 0.012% chance at best even though the WCC would have no problem with it because they don't offer football) but my question is how far would you be willing to sell out all other Cougar sports in the name of promoting our football team and earning the school some $$$?

I call a spade a spade, and I think that if you're too narrow minded to see where others are coming from then you need to be called out on it. You're implying that anyone who thinks differently than you isn't thinking right, which is incorrect, and this is coming from someone who agrees with you on the point. It's fine to support your point, but to belittle others who disagree with you is wrong and I'll stand by that 100%. I'm relaxed, if I wasn't I would have written something like this: GWaaaa! Shoodupdiji jibbit manchafracasm! I speak (and type) in gibberish when I'm too worked up for words. I live in Utah, and have never heard anyone say anything bad about Gonzaga or St. Mary's, and I'd say that sending a quarter of your conference teams to the big dance is pretty decent, throw BYU in there and it becomes one third. Anyway, I didn't mean to offend you beyond trying to shock you into the realization that you're not the only one who goes through a thought process, and you're not the only one who has the right.

If Jake Heaps doesn't start against Washington, I'll never give BYU another dollar again until the day I die. My personal opinion on this one matter is more important than those of the numerous people BYU has hired to actually make that decision. And thousands of other boosters would agree with me that BYU would be wrong to disagree with us, which proves my negative action here is, in fact, right.

Seriously, do you think The Mtn. will give BYU full television rights to every home football game? If you think that, you're absolutely smoking CRACK! No offense. The Mtn. may give BYU the rights to re-televise home football games a week later. The Mtn. may give BYU the rights to televise any un-televised football/basketball home games on BYUTV. Comcast may promise BYU an extra game on CBS-CS and Versus every year, and perhaps even a football game on actual CBS next year. That's it. What else are they seriously going to give us? Nothing else, from where I stand.

As for the WCC, I preferred them back when the 8-team WAC was in play! Why? Because we left the WAC once already. The WAC is GARBAGE. I puked at the thought of home football games with San Jose State and NMSU (let along traveling to Hawaii in all Olympic sports!). The WCC is in very fertile recruiting grounds (IE, every major PAC-8 area: NorCal, SoCal, Washington, Oregon). It has stronger basketball, soccer, and volleyball than the WAC. And most of all, it's NOT the crappy WAC. Which would have been a terrible, HORRIBLE idea, and that's WITH Fresno State and Nevada. Going independent in football itself, that idea ain't too bad. :D

Maybe Holmoe will drop the September game with Nevada and schedule Eastern Washington. After all, The Hair and Nevada are bossom buddies. Just tell them we need a REAL game, not a scrimmage with a school that lacks integrity. That ought to piss off The Hair man...........

I concur. People are thinking emotionally when they diss the WCC in basketball. The WCC is MUCH better than the WAC would ever be in basketball. Tell me the Marriott wouldn't sell out when Gonzaga or St. Mary's came to play there. And they are excellent in basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Track meets are regional, so we don't need a conference for those anyway. And ESPN already has a contract with WCC. Its a win win. We get complete autonomy of the football schedule--not tied down to sucky WAC teams (NM State???), but we could still fill our schedule with MWC teams, Pac 10 teams, Big 12 Teams, and the better used to be but now are MWC teams. And we should get 2M per home game from ESPN, since they won't have to be paying the WAC so much. I imagine any negotiating with the WAC now wil be a downward trend. I also think that the WCC should let Utah State in for other sports since they had our backs. Maybe that's too emotional of a response. Anyway, since WCC is for NON-REVENUE sports and for Basketball in which they are CLEARLY SUPERIOR to what the WAC would have been--just look at their RPI, I don't get the dissing of WCC. It seems rather snobbish without reason and a completely emotional response (we didn't want them originally, so that must not be a good option). Either MWC bends over backwards for our TV goals, or we should walk.

Wouldn't it also be nice to go somewhere where they actually want us instead of just needing us? Just a thought.

If these rumors of Hawaii indy in football (HELLO long-term FB contract), and going to WCC in bball, then maybe USU can do something with football (drop it? Go 1AA), and put bball in WCC...NOW we're talking!

Agree completely. Perhaps that is just an emotional response too, but I think the WCC makes a lot of sense for non-revenue sports. After BYU leaves, I think the MWC TV deal crumbles because they lose the advertising from the Utah Market (which some have said makes up 60% of their ads) and have to figure out how a bunch of teams from flyover country are going to generate any interest.

Plus AQ status just got harder to get by adding teams outside of the top 50. So, the rest of the BCS conferences, especially the Big East, are probably thanking Hair for the boneheaded move that makes it harder to get AQ status. Hmm....I wonder if Hair is a plant from the BCS to mismanage the MWC and keep us down.

They are salivating over the idea of bringing in BYU. They post Denver as a good travel partner, but I think Utah State makes more sense--if their football could survive as an independent. http://wholurks.blogspot.com/2010/08/byu-and-west-coast-conference.html Its kind of funny too, but apparently we have a reputation for having an ego and needing it stroked. :D

Personally, I think this is the most likely outcome because I really can't see the MTN giving in. With the addition of Boise State, Fresno, Nevada, and probably Houston as soon as we bolt, they will probably try to make a go of it--and fail miserably--rather than concede. But I am nuch more interested in the independent option anyway.

Schmoe - you've given others a hard time and called names countless times before for disagreeing with your opinions. And so, with that, I leave you with that timeless phrase: "Pot, meet kettle." And hot damn does it apply in this case.

I mean seriously - how often do we see the term "grow up" - or much worse - on this forum? And then of course you respond by calling him a "dick." Are you seeing what's wrong with this picture?

Who wouldn't be okay with that? That's not really even a question worth taking the time to ask. Fact of the matter is that it doesn't look likely at this point, as even you pointed out. Sticking with the MWC is what makes the most sense at this point - but only on the conditions that they do meet some/most/all of our demands. Playing in the MWC and making $1.3/year when we could, would, and should be making millions upon millions more is an unacceptable option.

When it comes down to it, Craig will swallow his pride and allow BYU's non-football sports to stay in the MWC. Craig is not a "fan" - he will make the best business decision, and the best business decision would be to keep BYU, even if only in non-football sports.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize that this was your fight. Name me the last time I called someone a name simply for disagreeing with something hypothetical. You could look at my exchange with Craig-O about FSU & UNR as an example of how I treat hypothetical situations and treat others opinions with respect. I don't get after people about ideas, I get after them about behavior, which is completely different.
