I wanted to prove purple wrong by comparing final AP rankings historically, however, he has a pretty valid claim to Washington's strong football tradition. Of course comparing prior to the 1970's is no challenge since we were irrelevant in football prior to Lavell. since then UW has had the edge on us in the '70s and '90s and we edged them in the '80s (very close) and beat them in the 2000's (not very close). I would say Washington definitely has a longer football tradition than we do, however, as it currently stands we are still among the top teams annually and UW still has to prove they belong back among the top teams. For Now all UW has is tradition to fall back on and they probably think that beating BYU helps them reestablish themselves among the good teams once again. I personally think it will take more than one good win for them to get there and I don't think they will beat us in Provo this year anyway. I just don't see us losing this game.
Anyway, I'll give Purple his football tradition, but I think he still has a long way to go to being relevant in today's football landscape, whereas, BYU is already relevant as evidenced by their recent success and by all the current attention surrounding what BYU plans to do. BYU changed college football more than once in the past 30 years (ie, evolution of the passing game, changing of the bowl landscape) and they look to be starting a new wave of change with their current moves. BYU is definitely relevant both yesterday and today ... Unfortunately for UW, they are only relevant in the past.
