LOfeakingL!!! Here's my take away: we have two QBs who would start just about anywhere AND who have almost doubled the angst that opposing defensive coordinators have to prepare their team for...BOTH QBs exceeded MY expectations on Saturday...NO turnovers! NO stupid audibilizings (is that a word?) AND with egos and leadership that this team will and seems to be rallying to....The future has never looked brighter; the present has never been more exciting

I really like the combo. Not sure I love rotating every series, but I like the change of pace the group brings. This tandem QB package can work this year.

As for complaints of Jake throwing it too hard, are you freaking kidding me? Seriously? I guess you guys think John Elway sucks, and Brett Favre too because they threw it hard. So does Dan Marino and Peyton Manning, because they all throw a fast ball, right? Seriously, the issue is not if the ball is thrown hard or soft, it is if the ball thrown to a place the receiver can catch it? You put it in a guys hands in a reasonable position, they have to catch it. Whether it is rifled of feathered. jacobsen dropped a great throw. So did Ashworth. So did other guys. this has been an issue all Fall camp too, and this team needs to clean that up before it costs us in a close game. Luckily it did not v. UW, but I put this squarely on the receiving corp.

I'm not seeing any Riley bashing here, nor am I seeing anyone say that Nelson didn't play better than Heaps on Saturday. Stating his limitations is doing just that: stating his limitations. I think some people here need a football IQ test performed on them.

Exactly.

There is one, it's the prediction game. That's why Airwolf is in last place.

LOL BlueIsBetter. First off--that post "within one week of committing"???

My bad. It seemed like right away you were bagging on him early, if not within a week.

In seems like you forgot these posts where I show my utter HATRED for Riley.

BEFORE THE OPEN PRACTICE (on hearing that Nelson’s release is a lot higher from previous year by Hawkwing)

Good, that is great to hear that Nelsons release is higher. I wish I could have been there this morning, I had a work appt. I will be there this afternoon though. I am eager to verify Nelsons throws, and i hope that he has much improved. That would be great for BYU football to RS Heaps a year before he starts.

After seeing Riley throw in person, I mentioned quite a few times that he looked good on cross routes and throws a good, short ball.

QB battles (after seeing Riley in person):

“It is very valuable to see that Riley is doing well with the ones, and is not a castoff. I like to see whomever the qb is to be gelling with his squad”

“Good on Nelson for doing a good job”

DURING THE GAME (IN THE GAME THREAD):
Not a fan of the 2 qb system, but a fan of the 2 qb's!

Heaps had a pass dropped in the endzone by wilson. Not perfect, but catchable. Right now I go with Nelson, but he is not a throwing threat. See that 3rd and long die, and the reciever had to go down and get it? That is a first down if he can catch and turn... That said, we seem to be doing better by spreading out the field. Nelson to start the 3rd, unless UW scores.

DiLuigi hit in stride!!! ATTA BOY NELSON! YOU DA MAN!!!!

PROPS PROPS PROPS, THANK YOU!!!”

AFTER THE GAME:

Nelson did good. I am glad to have him for half the game, tonight. He is able to do things that Jake cannot, and vice a versa. It will be better when we can have this be a situational qb split rather than a tradeoff. The defense will be less prepared when that happens. Us running the ball OUTSIDE the tackles was the difference tonight. i am glad we gave up on trying to establish JJ up the middle... Square peg, round hole. A few of Riley's throws were very suspect, as were Jake's tonight. And they both made great plays and led good drives. Ironically, I think that without the play of either qb tonight, we lose this game.

We also need to do things circumstantially if we are going to have 2 qb's play. 3rd and 4? I want Riley in there. 3 and 12? Riley needs to grab a drink real quick and get ready for a shorter yardage play... There was at least 3 or 4 times in the game last night when I was like, "Man, I wish the other guy was in right now..."

Yep, nothing but hate. Ever since Riley was named starter I have been very supportive of him. Show me were I haven't... I bet that all people want to be thrown under the bus like I did with Riley, huh?

snoscythe wrote:

Don't pretend that you've been completely supportive of the guy "in blue" when you made it very clear you didn't think he should even be in blue.

I have to call you out on this, show me where I stated I did not want him on the team. You are dead wrong. Me not thinking he can run last years' offense has NOTHING to do with me not wanting him on the team. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Granted, once Bronco announced the 2 QB format, you eased up and showed some hope, but the past few weeks don't erase the entire offseason.

Again, once Bronco named a starter, and a member of the depth chart, I was on board...

snoscythe wrote:
You never offered any reason for your vitriol towards Nelson and your constant refrain that he isn't a BYU quarterback.

I've offered plenty of reasons as to why I don't think he is a traditional BYU quarterback that can run the last 3 years' offense. They have modified the offense for him and it seems to be working, so we are in a good position.

Riley looks good, but he has limitations, and there is nothing wrong with stating those. You think the coaching staff doesn't know he has those, and don't gameplan around them? You think that Heaps people are worshippers? Good night! They should coin an "Anti-Heaps/Hype kneejerk post response" religion for you. I was one of the first people on here to post that he didn't look good at times, during the game. Very shaky, but he will lose that in time. Keep in mind all of the posts that I have referred to Heaps redshirting.

Things are going good, and ironically the 2 qb system is working. Am I going to post when Riley underthrows? Sure. But I will do the same things with Jake. I try and see things the way they are, and though I get lost sometimes, I think I have been pretty consistent at doing that. You can see what you want to, though.

Jacobsen should not have dropped that deep ball, and whoever dropped the one in the end zone should not have either. But you do have to throw with touch on short passes, not just rifle it in there. The examples cited by you didn't rifle every pass.

It was Wilson, and they are catchable but don't need to be rifled in there. They do need to catch them when they are rifled in though. Both parties have some blame. Hopefully Jake will settle down, and the WR and TE's can fix their end of things. We should be fine soon.

BlueIsBetter, I am done with you. This could go on ad infinitum. I could go back and post my positive comments on Heaps too, but that wouldn't be good enough for you as you are already convinced that I am a Heaps hater because I think he has a ways to go before we put the whole team on his back.

I think you have more than adequately illustrated the double standard that's being applied when it comes to supporting our guys. You can say one guy will never be good enough, and call that being objective, but when I say someone needs to improve or actually prove themselves before we give them the ball is somehow being unfaithful to the boys in blue. In all your ramblings, you've never addressed why you are okay with that dichotomy of reason.

Listen Sno,

You do seem like you want Heaps to fail, and maybe I seem like I want Nelson to. But I don't, i just want the cougars to win. Right now that means using two qbs. In the future it will be something different. I am sorry if you see a double standard. You aren't being unfaithful to the boys in blue, and I am not either. We are both calling things the way we see it, and we happen to disagree. That is in part why these boards exist. I have done everything to address you and your posts, and that is fine that you don't want to address mine. I am man enough to admit when I have been wrong, and have done so in several "Riley" instances. I didn't think he could throw a short ball, he can and can do it well. I didn't think he would be able to move the ball well, until now he has proven me absolutely wrong. Although he is running a modified version of our offense, he is doing it extremely well up to this point. I can concede where I am wrong, but you unfortunately cannot. You failing to address several of my posts isn't surprising, "in all my ramblings." Good one. Personal attacks. That is a great way to not address the issue at hand. Look, you don't hate Heaps, and I don't hate Riley. I think that Jake has already proven that he deserves to be in the mix, and so has Riley. I have done enough to explain my position on Riley and Jake, and anyone that (unfortunately) reads this thread will agree. Post your positive comments on Heaps, I would love to see them.

Does anyone remember Ryan Hancock? I remember recievers saying after his first game that they weren't use to how hard he threw the ball. Maybe that is the problem here and it will get better as the season progresses. I really like Jake but I think Nelson did a great job too. I am super excited to see what happens this weekend. Too bad I have a multi stake youth service project that I have to be to with the Young Men. :sulk:
