I think we should Bench Chambers

I like OC, but he is a player that every time he takes off with the ball I'm half-biting off my tongue with anxiety that he's going to fumble. The only comfort I have is that Bronco is personally handling the special teams coaching and wouldn't put him in there if he didn't have confidence in him. Still, I haven't grown to be totally comfortable yet when he has the ball.

Any extremely talented player will live on the edge a little bit. Chambers makes us nervous because he makes our hearts beat faster as he can always take it "all the way". Any brilliant player will have the chances to make a mistake, that is why they are brilliant. It is like an artist who is eccentric....they may write crazy beautiful songs but not be able to function in a bland world. OC is an artist....

If that were true he'd have a lot more returns for touchdowns.

Not sure about the artist part either...but art is in the eye of the beholder, so whatever. Personally, I think he'd do better with lower the shoulder as opposed to attempting a spin move.

Let's put things in a bit of perspective. JJ used to have an issue with ball security. His freshman year every time he got the ball your heart would also beat faster knowing that that he had the potential to break free but also knowing he had some ball security issues. JJ has gone at great lengths to ensure he no longer has those issues, even changing the way he plays, to the point that he can be trusted to carry the football. I'm sure though, if JJ were to inadvertently fumble this season there will be many shouting that JJ has ball security issues. Keep in mind, though, Unga himself had several key fumbles over his career. What's the difference?

Chambers has the same potential. I think the frustration we're seeing isn't necessarily that Chambers is a bad player, etc. just that our expectations weren't meant, which is stupid because as far as I know Chambers isn't aware of what our expectations are for him.

So, my recommendation for those "disappointed" with Chambers is lower your expectations. He's not Jerry Rice. He's not Austin Collie.

I can't believe this thread is getting so much play. I guess perception is reality since chambers has fumbled a couple of times close to the goal line which stopped drives but in reality he has fumbled very few times in respec to how many times he touches the ball during a game. I can't remember even one time that he has fumbled on a kick or punt return and yet we have posters saying that they hold their breath every time he goes back to receive one. He has, however, nearly returned a put and a kick off for a touchdown at least once. Maybe that is why he is still getting the return duties.

He's fumbled on kicked returns. Remember all the debate about him just needing to take a knee instead of trying to run with it.

Tell me which game it was. I want to know since i have watched every game he has played in with the exception of Last years TCU and FSU games (which I listened to on the radio) and do not remember when he fumbled on a return.

All I know is we wouldn't have beaten the :utard: without Chambers' return game last year.

Where were you Saturday when he fumbled a return? Luckily we recovered it immediately, but it did happen. I'd have to check on the number of overall fumbles, but I like the guy, and like I said, if Bronco didn't have confidence in his ability, he wouldn't be returning punts and KO's, so enough said.

For the Record, I love Chambers. He is one of my favorite players. He seems very respectful when internviewed (other then the interview he gave as a freshman which doesn't seem to hold up to the others which makes me question the validity of the quotes in the first interview). This entire thread is a TIC, has nothing to do with my personal feelings about Chambers.

Some of us got it. :lol: 8)

That had a lot to do with the respect they had for his return ability, and with the fact that before that game, he didn't know what "fair catch" ment. BSU had a returner about 25 or 30 years ago who was like OC. They called him "the river boat gambler".

Hate to do this because I am a Chambers fan, but you asked for it:

Sept. 19, 2009 vs. FSU - If it wasn’t for two O’Neill Chambers fumbles (one at the Florida State 14-yard line that killed a certain scoring drive, and one on a kickoff that allowed Florida State to tack on a field goal just before halftime)...http://isportsweb.com/2010/01/12/byu-football-2009-season-recap/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Oct. 24, 2009 vs TCU - Despite a couple of fumbled balls, including a muffed punt from O'Neill Chambers just before halftime... https://secure.deseretnews.com/blog/event/1/100/BYU-Cougars-live-game-blog-Football-TCU-at-BYU.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Dec. 22, 2009 vs Oregon St. (Las Vegas Bowl)
- O'Neill Chambers fumbled a punt and Oregon State recovered it at the 1 yard line. A holding call on the Beavers called the play back and the subsequent punt resulted in a touchback. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=272&sid=9117478" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's 3 fumbles last season on punts/kickoffs alone. Facture in the OU fumble and the other FSU fumble and that's 5 right there. Out of 12 games in a season that's almost one fumble for every two games.

The Oregon St one doesn't count, sorry.

I didn't see a fumble on a return. I saw him catch a pass and fumble that out of bounds. I didn't see a fumble on the return. Could you explain when it happened in the game? I would like to know.

K, I will have to check on the TCU one but like was said before. The Oregon state one doesn't count. Also the one against FSU before half time was Jan Jorgenson not Chambers. I can't tell you how many times internet news article get the wrong guy on a play so I am half inclined to not believe it even then since I watched the games myself. Having said that, you have found 1 that was an actual lost fumble in how many kicks and punts that he has returned?

I have held a family meeting with Mr. Chambers and have advised him that only the ref needs to pry the ball out of his cold dead hands! He then said mom!!!!!!!!!!! Sheesh why don't you suit up and take the freight train licks! I had to take a moment and realize ummm nope I am too cute and delicate of a flower to put on that stinky stuff! I always close my eyes when he is on the verge of the impact and have made an observation if there was some sort of obstacle in their way to buffer the hits I don't think he would be getting hit as hard.

But anywho I have been feverishly working on a design and patent for an antidrop handheld device for him, hope it will be before the season is over and in the process makes me a millionaire!!!!! Muah hahaha :crazy: Everyone knows how to reach me so when he single handedly all by himself takes the field and makes our entire team lose call me so I can give hima the biggest time out of his life!

Smooches all I hope this makes eveyone feel so much better to know that mama Chambers is on the case, lol!

P.S. May GOD ALWAYS proctect and bless my son and every player out there that suits up for the love of the game!

Luv ya

Mama Chambers, if all football players had parents like you and Papa Chambers, the game would be a lot better.

I am sooooo glad that you are part of our little community here.

God bless you and yours, especially #4 on the 18th.

Thank you, I am very appreciative to be welcomed in this great community! I sure can't wait for next Saturday may the countdown begin!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mama & Papa just thankful that at the end of every game or practice he still has his health and faith. I am sure he wishes everyone just enjoys the game as much as he does. By the way I taught him how to catch with his finger tips one handed with an over extended arm, ssshhh but don't tell dad he thinks he did, lol ;)

When I think of how many players get bashed on talk boards and call in shows, I always try to remind myself of what they sacrificed to be here and that the all have moms.

I do worry about ball control and returning deep balls or punts with guys right in his face, but Bronco explained the positive aspect of this last year for the return game.

Go Chambers
