I dunno about Gman....the injury is to his non-throwing shoulder, so I think he's off here.

I wonder if Riley will come back as a QB next year, or something else (Safety?). And if he's QB, does he fight Jake for the starter position again? Does he come back in ahead of Lark as the back-up? Lots of question for next season...

You can move Riley to safety and still use him correctly as a "situational" quarterback. Eric Weddle was very effective doing this.

If Jake goes out and plays well, there will be no questions for 2011. If he stinks all year, we might look at another round of "As the QB turns" next year.

Let's all pray it sorts itself out with Jake's great play.

It is probably not the best form to go quoting yourself, but I'm not sure anyone reads my posts so here is what I said after the AFA game.

Pretty sad when I had the thought a couple of times today that if Riley keeps putting his head down like that he's going to get injured or get a concussion minimum, followed by the thought, "hmm, that wouldn't be all that bad if Riley got a concussion right about now." I'm probably not the only one that thought that either. QuarterbackU

Per Harmon:

Harmonwrites Riley learned of his injury after an MRI on Monday. He could have played but decided on Tuesday to go for surgery, say sources. See my blog.

Thanks to the nifty tweet box to your right.

I am now waiting for the radio morons to start calling bronco a liar if it hasn't started already.

I seperated both shoulders during my college days and they do not heal well or fast with rest. They're also very painful to sleep on and easy to reinjure from simple bench press exercises etc.

My guess is that the staff knew about it, but not the extent til the MRI, but it was Riley's decision to deal with the pain or opt for surgery. Had he waited any longer, a medical redshirt would not have been available.

Jay Drew is making some assertions that Riley didn't seem injured at the FSU game. This isn't surprising, a seperated shoulder is not a broken collar bone and with a seperated shoulder the problem is with pain and strength while actually using it. A broken collar bone = no use.

The pain can be extreme and I had many sleepless nights. I opted to let one heal and it took months to get right and it still hasn't felt completely right even now. The other, my throwing arm (though I never played qb) I had surgery on and it's pain free and as good as new.

Thankfully, the NCAA doesn't ask Jay Drew who's hurt and who's not. That's where the doctors come in and they wouldn't do a season ending shoulder surgery if it wasn't injured. Prima No Nocere; (first do no harm.) If surgery is done, it's because surgery was needed. I've never had a problem with Jay Drew until this one, he needs to put a stick in it. Riley is a tough sob, if he didnt' need the surgery, he wouldnt' get it.

I stood 10 feet from Riley after the game and watched him chatting with his Dad and family, and I can tell you that I did not see any signs of a shoulder issue, but was not looking for one. I did see other obvious signs of injury with other players, however. Riley got up and jogged off the field, so he hid it really well. Unlike Thomas, Reynolds and Logan, whose injuries were obvious when they happened because play stopped when they went down.

I know Reynolds initial testing was negative, but they wanted a MRI to verify. I hope it was negative as well, although an ankle issue for a 6'5", 330 lb guy is pretty serious. And like I sad with Logan, first guess was partial torn rotator cuff, but want the MRI to verify. I am sure the coaches know all by now, but doubt they will give details unless a guy misses a game.

Too bad for Riley. Feel bad for him, and he really is a fierce competitor.

Can't wait for the Heaps/Lark Duo Headed QB Monster to start on Saturday! :)

His right shoulder is definately hanging here. He's tough but those shoulders are very very painful.

HA! IIRC, Lark was all-state as a guard in basketball. I'm sure he can run the option for us!

BTW- this kind of thing, is how stars are born. Heaps inherits the job outright now and the team faces an uphill battle for respectability this year. He's still a true frosh but he's the guy now at QB U.

Let's hope he makes the best of it, (and let's hope the O-line protects him)

Yep, the team is now going to look to Heaps for leadership. He has a real chance to win the team and the fans and the coaches over. As Darrell Waltrip says, "Boogity, boogity, boogity! Let's go racing boys!"

I saw that during the game and thought his shoulder looked kind of funny. I forgot that quickly because there was no mention of it. They just went with Heaps and I thought that was the plan or something. That wasn't his last play - he came in after that no? His last play was the pick he threw I think. If so, tough guy - shoulder injuries are brutal.

Terrible news for the team and Riley. But I highly doubt that he will be able to come back and replace Lark as the 2nd string quarterback. Lark was competing out of a mission with limited reps and was only slightly behind the other two. With a full year, and the 2nd string reps I think he is going to be a lock for that spot.

Too bad for Riley. My biggest fear now is that Heaps gets injured because we cant protect our QB.

At least we will have to move on to other topics!

God took matters into his own hands ;) This is the best news of the young season, not that Nelson is injured, but that Heaps will be THEE QB now. I am also far more comfortable with Lark as the backup. BYU now has two very talented QBs, throwing QBs who will develop into stars (at least one of them will). No more adjusting to two different QBs, no more lefty in the mix, no more option QB, no more juggling QBs every series (I can't actually believe our coaches did that), no more QB controversy, no more losses? hope a hope a hope.

I don't know if this changes anything about my anxiety about playing a very, very good team in Nevada. We owe them a loss, however. They beat us in Reno in Crowton's last season; the infamous fly in the day of the game, get the win, and fly home, game. Also the infamous game in which somebody (can't remember who it was) made a long run for a TD, and some bozo on the opposite of the field, well behind the ball, blocks some Nevada player in the back, a player who could not have possibly had any impact on the play. So the TD was called back, and BYU does not score, and loses a close one.

For those of you who haven't seen this video, it inlcudes Greg Wrubell's call of the game, in which he clearly describes Riley as favoring his right shoulder as he jogs off the field.

Way too late, the Ute trolls have been saying that exact thing ever since the article was posted in the trib and dnews.
