Is Bronco over sensitive about BC?

When it comes right down to it, why did he make that call? I think it may have been in response to fan complaints about Crowton always going for it on 4th down and short, regardless of where he was on the field. My theory is that Bronco is simply stating what he learned at that time, which is, never make a decision in order to please the fans. Always make decisions based on what is better for the program. I don't think he's being oversensitive. I think he is simply stating that he's going to be the coach, make the best decisions he can and worry about the fallout later.

I agree with you 100%, that Bronco is choosing to hold onto this incident but i find it interesting that on the one hand he says that he is not interested in what the fans think and does not pay attention to them or the internet or media yet on the other he continues to bring up the booing, showing he really does care.

What the fans think either matters or it doesn't and if it doesn't matter then he should not continue to be hurt by the boos from 6 years ago. Does that make sense?

How is a player supposed to know who is being booed? All he knows is that there are boos being rained down from the stands.

So we can say well I wasn't booing the player I was booing the decision by the coaching staff but what happens is this: The punting unit comes out on 4th and 1 and the fans boo. Obviously that is booing the decision to punt. BYU then shanks the punt and what happens? The boo birds come out again. Some or maybe even most are still booing the decision to punt and not the actual punter but the punter doesn't know that. All he knows is he shanked it and now he hears boos by his own fans.

In my opinion you can boo terrible calls by the officials, you can boo when an opposing player or coach does something disrespectful or ridiculous but I find it classless and bad taste to boo your own team no matter the circumstance. I was not at the BC game but I find it outrageous that our fans would boo our first year coach in his very first game.

Anyway that is just my opinion on the matter.

I don't think he's hurt at all by it. I just think that happens to be the point he decided to ignore boo birds and focus on what he thinks is right.

LES is supposed to be where our team plays with the support of the fans, when fans boo the team it is a betrayal by the fans.

I partly agree, and certainly hate whining by the occasional fan around me in the stadium. But betrayal it's not. Was McMahon betraying the team when he refused to let Lavell give up in the Miracle Bowl? No, he was making a point and had to make it fast.

Fans aren't players, but we aren't the team's wife and children either. We're loyal customers, and any operation that ignores its customers' feedback does so at their own peril. They charge us a fair but significant amount to come to the games. So I come in blue, I cheer, I occasionally boo refs, I have a great time, and I've never booed our team. But in the instance cited, where the manager has made a big mistake, appears to have given up, and this is my only opportunity to emphasize for him that it was a mistake, heck yeah I should be allowed to boo.

Payne missing that chip shot field goal in Boise--now THAT was a betrayal!

Point was this: Bronco says he doesn't follow what the fanbase is saying ever since something that happened 6 years ago. Fan reaction--go online and complain that Bronco needs to change. End result--nothing, because Bronco hasn't been paying attention for 6 years now. You might as well go yell at the thunder to be quiet.

One way to solve the problem of irritated or ignorant fans attending games in LES:

That game is probably in Italy there was probably a fight between rival teams' fans and the game was forced to be played in an empty stadium. Italy has several games a year like this because the fans there are truly insane, so as to make one instance of booing seem like Romper Room.

Hey, at least we've evolved since the Roman times where the losing coach would have been fed to lions or something.

I don't boo our own team. It just doesn't feel right despite whatever logical reason provided. But I completely understand fans wanting to boo the BC decision to punt. As already mentioned in this thread, fans love players and coaches who make decisions like McMahon against SMU when he refused to let the punt unit on the field. I don't think real fans (most on boards like this) would ever boo an on-the-field mistake or lack of skill or miscalculated play call.....but I don't blame anyone for expressing frustration with a call that appears to be conceding the game to the opponent. Same thing with a player who gives a lazy effort on a play. All we want is to know they gave it a fair try, and the BC punt sure looked like Bronco was calling it quits on our offense.

I also have to agree that Bronco would be well served to NEVER bring up the BC booing again. He can easily state his philosophy about not trying to appease all the fans without making it sound like he's holding a grudge against the fans. Nobody likes to hear repeatedly about how you were mistreated, even if it's justified. It just makes you sound like you aren't mature enough to move on.

He sometimes acts like the fans don't matter and we're all a bunch of mindless goons eating hotdogs in the stands. Without fans he has no job. Every athlete and coach should remind themselves of that every day and take a second to appreciate us the way we appreciate them. I LOVE players and coaches who express real appreciation for the fans. I'm a big Bronco fan but I get the impression that he doesn't give a crap about any fans and that bothers me.

He could easily have said "The booing at the BC game really upset me because I love my players and it's not fair to boo them. I made a decision that I felt gave use the best chance to come back and win. I understand in retrospect that fans may have viewed the decision to punt as giving up and many of the fans in the stands were the LOYAL supporters who stuck through the losing seasons. I hope that they will be patient with the rebuilding team as I will be patient with the rebuilding fan base." END OF STORY. EVERYBODY IS HAPPY. SAME LESSONS ARE LEARNED AND NOBODY SOUNDS LIKE THEY NEED A LESSON ON LETTING WOUNDS HEAL.

One more thing....

Calling fans who boo'd the BC punt "fickle" isn't really fair. Again, I don't boo our team but in defense of those who boo'd.....

Being fickle means your passions and loyalty are inconsistent and unpredictable. When fans saw Bronco, who has professed to hold himself and the team to a very high level of competition, essentially give up the game with his decision to punt THAT decision seemed fickle. That's why fans were upset. Bronco didn't seem to be calling the plays with his consistent competitive passion.

Too many BYU fans are spoiled brats. How quickly we forget the long list of LDS or other coaches names that th eoutspoken BYU fans assumed would all give up their NFL or other jobs for the dream job of coaching BYU, living within the constraints involved, and catering to its spoiled fans. And then 1 by 1 the ydeclined. Even Kwhit spurned us. It came down to which assistant coach shall we promote. Wait a minute, that is how we got Lavell Edwards too.

BYU fans need to realize who we are and who we are not and appreciate what we have. Lavell Edwards, and now Bronco Mendenhall work for a fractoin of what they would be paid elsewhere and are here for a greater purpose or they would not be here. They sacrifice of themselves and fans take it for granted and then turn on them when we have a rebuilding year or tough schedule or in this case - BOTH at the same time.

The same can be said of many of the players. They had other alternatives and chose to come to BYU. R-E-S-P-E-C-T

GIve them their dues - even when they are imperfect.

I am not against constructive criticism - but keep it constructive and balanced and fair.

Go Cougs

PS Bronco is not an idiot - I don't think he chose to punt with a visoin of a net 12 yarder. He probably had seen something better than tha thappen in practice and envisoined it rolling dead on the 1, gettingg a Safety, scoring a TD, going for 2 and only being down 1 - making a stop and kicking a field goal to win it. It jus tdidn't work out that way. And I am sure that if he had gone for it on 4th, failed as odds would indicate would happen becasue that is why teams rarely go for it on 4th, all of the same whiners would be first in line to call that a bone headed call or question whatever play he called on 4th and 5.

Bronco works for a fraction of what he'd make somewhere else ......because 8/10 is a fraction. He's estimated to make $900,000 a year. That is not as high as Florida or Michigan or ND but it's not like his job is a charity case to appease a bunch of spoiled fans.

Lavell on the other hand was grossly underpaid.

I think every year Bronco brings this up and every year we debate this with no change on anyone's part.

Water under the bridge in my book. By mentioning yearly Bronco is looking just as bratty as the fans he's criticising. Take the high road Bronco. Forgive and forget if that's the standard you expect out of others.

Occasionally I get "booed" by colleagues at work for a poor decision. Do I bring it up every time the opportunity presents itself? No, that would be stupid. Why would I keep reminding people and drawing attention to a mistake I made in the past or a mistake they made in the past. I'd rather call attention to the success I'm having now. For whatever reason, justified or not, Bronco keeps mentioning it. It puts a bad taste in everyone's mouth. The smart thing to do would be not to mention it, even if provoked. Why keep reopening wounds.

Lastly, whereas I personally don't boo coaches or players of the team I'm cheering for, I don't really care if others do. I try not to let the actions of others affect me. We're all paying money to be there. The coach wouldn't have a job and players wouldn't have a team to be playing for if we weren't paying to be there. If some fans want to express their dissatisfaction, that's fine by me. In this situation, the fans were actually right. He shouldn't have punted.

Fans weren't booing him because we weren't running up the score. Fans were booing him because he was giving up.

Great post.

Here is my 2 cents.

Bronco Mendenhall is a football coach, not a public relations official. Some coaches can do both, some coaches can't. Bobby Bowden was a great coach and a great PR guy for example. Bob Knight was a great coach but a terrible PR guy.

Bronco is always upfront and honest in his interviews, this is where the "Bronco is a robot" jokes stem from. Bronco tells it like it is and sometimes that is not the right approach from a PR standpoint. It offends and frustrates people. But that is just the way Bronco is. He may not be a very good PR guy but he is one hell of a football coach. 50-17.

But to say Bronco doesn't care about the fans is a joke. It was under Bronco that these weekly firesides started. How awesome is it that a 12 year old kid living in San Diego or Wyoming or Texas can now meet the players he loves face to face? Fans from all over the country are now getting the chance to be upfront and personal with these coaches and players like they never have before. That happened because of Bronco.

Other examples are the 5 dollar T-shirts, Thursdays Heros and the players high-fiving the fans after every game home or away. All of these things are FOR the fans and they happened/are happening BECAUSE of Bronco.

I find it funny how the fans that feel it's okay to boo Broncos performance are the same fans that get offended when Bronco essentially boos their performance.

Boo Bronco if you wish but be ready to take it like a man when he boos you right back.

Yes, when Bronco came to BYU-Idaho for devo he talked about the BC game. During his talk he said " For all of those who booed me I forgive you" I am surprised that he keeps bringing it up.I have been know to boo sometimes when the lack of energy or preparation. These student athletes are not playing for free. A 4 year college education can be pricey. Love my team and Bronco but he has to get over getting booed.
