I'm reminded in many ways, how Bret Engemann came to town and how he amounted to nothing, inspite of NFL size, an NFL arm, etc. because he was a me 1st player. From minute 1, Engeman refused to allow the team to cut his hair as a freshman and then Brett Keisel, Chris Hoke, Shawn Nua, and Ryan Denney (all NFL players) proceeded to make him their punching bags in practice for the year.

Sorry to change the topic, but that reminds me of one of the most hilarious and bizarre BYU stories I heard. Didn't Engemann get decked in the face by someone during his BYU pro day tryout in front of all the NFL scouts?

Someone refresh my memory on that one.

I also have talked to players and it seems it is more the practice tantrums/outbursts and constant back talking than it is the grades. Unless you are as blind as my dead cat you can clearly see he has attitude problems just based on his actions on the field. If its that bad in front of a national TV audience how much worse must it be in the privacy of practice and team meetings. Immaturity and idiotic behavior on the football field are not caused by coming to a new strange place, they are personality traits that are ingrained long before you are an 18 year old freshman at BYU. Bad attitudes don't just spring up out of nowhere. I understand as a non mormon living in provo that it is different than a lot of my own personal beliefs, but it is not an excuse to treat coaches and teammates the way O'neill apparently has. I hope he gets his business together, because while I am not a chambers supporter by any means, I don't think he needs to get kicked out of school or transfer to a d II school to learn his lesson. Transferring or quitting would be the biggest mistake of his life. Take some responsibility, man up, change your attitude and get your ass back out on the field.

Problem is, with that approach, once it happens enough, certain kids will find another game. Not like we aren't battling Utah for recruits. Have enough of these situations, and we start losing the Joe Sampson's, and DeQuan Everett's and other kids to other schools. These guys need to know they can make it, know they will be treated well and fairly. Basically, the dealer needs to be willing to educate while the game is played, not just willing to just dole out the consequences. It sounds like that did happen with OC, and Bronco has worked with him to educate him. But I guarantee if we asked the Logan;s and Eason's about this, they are way more sympathetic about OC's plight, because they know how tough it is.

Or maybe Logan and Eason are smart enough to surround themselves with people that will help them with their task and not think they're bigger than the team or the rules.

Here's some exerpts from facebook from the last hour of OCs relatives, current roommates and florida friends.

Lajuan Chambers um chase your dream or keep being a star wideout that's 6-3 playing slot getting 4 balls thrown at him a game .....just saying

.Jonathan Perez Well You know my point of view on this; the Y gets two fingers, and we arent talking about thumbs

.Michael Botkin Im with JP and Lajuan...OC...bounce from that s***. I thought this was finally the year. Them cats dont know what they have. You need any help making a decision, hit me up bro. With only 1 year left after redshirting the transfer, you need to go mid-major where you can walk in and play. UCF-esque.

On an Engemann side not I am a waiter currently and he comes in weekly. All of us waiters commonly discuss what a jerk he is. I would love to hear the pro day face punching story if anyone has it.

I have several Engemann stories. It's sad too, the kid was very very talented, but a terrible teammate and a huge knucklehead. Our NFL caliber defensive players used to ruthlessly tee off on him in scrimmages.

Kind of funny that Doman got his snaps, as Doman really is the anti-Engemann.

Entitlement won't get you very far at BYU.

Agreed, there's nothing to gain by seeing him fail. I'd much rather see him get things right and help the team win this year and next.

Bad behavior though, is bad behavior and it can hurt the entire team if it's not squashed.

It's be a shame to see a kid blow the chance at a degree from one of the better undergrad educations in the country. We've seen how it's worked for other transfers and it's rarely been successful. Jacob Bowers went to Tulsa with the chance to play there and hasn't played one bit.... there are many many stories like this... the grass isn't always greener (in truth it almost never is).

I googled Engemann and found this interesting update on his Pro Day experience (punch in the face confirmed):

So if chambers runs that in a 40yd what is Mckay? a 4.9 no wonder why he came to byu

Dickson has a nice article on the situation here. link

Essentially, Chambers is still maturing and hopefully will learn from this experience and push through it. We all want him to succeed and do well, both on and off the field. With his mother looking for a place in the area might be the best thing for him, to have family around for support and encouragement.

One of the reasons to move Chambers was to get Mckays speed back to the edge. Do you really want to compare how many 20+ yard plays Mckay has had vs OC?

http://espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=185799" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

McKay averages 22+ yards per touch and has 7 career touchdowns; including one of the biggest in the last 5 years vs Oklahoma.

http://espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=381474" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

OC averageds 10 yards per touch and has 2 career touchdowns

No one has said that OC can't play, but he's not an NFL caliber receiver. There are lots of great college players that didn't, don't and won't translate their skills to the NFL.

The question is, does OC want to be a great college player?

Chambers long passes - 0 ( that I can think of)

Mackay - 1 punt return td, im guessing at least 5 receptions of over 50 yards, actually has gotten behind a db in his college career.

I am Mike Botkin. I have known OC since he was in 6th grade. Played AAU basketball with him and HS ball and had a part in him transferring to Harmony from Osceola.

I wasnt going to post on here, but when I seen this....

That made me upset.

Let me tell you guys the truth about Ty Anderson.

You want to blame OC for his action?

Which, some, sure, is OCs fault, some have happened for a while, BUT....Big A(what we called Ty Anderson) is 1 of the biggest factors in OCs "attitude"

About his attitude....when we won games...he didnt care if he had 1 catch, or 20 catches. He was as happy as can be. But, when we lost, you better stay away from him, or else he blow up and let everybody know that it is unacceptable.

back to Ty....

Ty and his brother Justin(Lil A)....had 0 discipline in our program. Players were allowed to miss "mandatory" weights, summer conditioning, kids came late to practice(like 45 minutes late) and nothing was said to them, kids cussed out coaches NUMEROUS times during games and practices, and nothing was done. No discipline. Kids ran the program. I dont think I ever even heard either of them raise their voices. Kids would sit there and cuss out assistants and they would just sit there with a dumb glare....it was almost laughable at how they won games because they just outtalented everybody else.

That is the place where OC came from.

Then...when recruiting got heavy...Lil A and Big A used him as their stepping stone...used him sooo bad. They both know what type of kid he is, and what type of place BYU is....but Lil A applied for GA spot 2 years before OC was a senior, and didnt get it, then when OC arrives and he is a 6'3 210 WR that BYU wants...all he does is sit in OCs ear for 2 years about BYU this and BYU that...and promising about taking care of him while he is there...etc.

I want O'Neill to transfer, no doubt about it. But, I support him if he stays. I want him to transfer, because he needs a clean start, it is clear that the coaches do not want him at BYU. I mean, sure, he isnt the easiest player to deal with, BUT...you cannot tell me Luke Ashworth is a better WR then OC? OC is probably the best "ATHLETE" I have ever seen in my life.

Play any position in football, can punt, can kick, can throw the ball 80 yards...can do ridiculous dunks, can shoot, can play hoops, can play soccer, can bomb a baseball, dominated FLORIDA track.

I want him to be used to his full potential, not be treated like he isnt wanted.

I just wanted to clarify Ty Andersons statements. Ty used OC to get into college just like his younger brother Justin did. Then, as soon as they leave, its time to bash OC when something goes wrong when in 2 years of coaching him, they never gave him 1 rule to follow because they were scared their meal ticket would leave.

...also, if you go to Florida, and ask coaches about "Harmonys old coaching staff"...they all laugh and say the kids ran them.

At 1 of the biggest 7 on 7 tourneys in Florida during the summer....Harmony was playing a team and a bunch of trash talk starter....Harmony players were cussing the other players out and was being loud and caused a huge scene. Harmony coaches just standing there like they dont know what is going on.

Every respectable coach in Florida laughs when somebody brings up the Andersons.

Lol yeah your correct, Mckay is fast haha Not!! you gotta get off the jam first buddy, looks like fsu corners bent Mckay over, got some lube and raped him on the line every play, Maybe Mckay should have waited to get married he's clearly lost a step, I put money on it that Mckay is not as fast as what we make him out to be, Apo blows by defenders faster than Mckay and yet he was sat for until he was hurt, be we want the speed on the outside, so your saying Cody is faster than Oc? humor me please :)

Just to clarify....I love the Andersons as people. Wont find 2 nicer GUYS then those 2...

But...You cant be "nice" and coach in Florida. Completely different swagger.

That tends to happen when everything is given to you just saying, if im correct Mckay's dad is big money? hmmm sure is good to get the ball when daddy pays for alot just saying, does Oc not have any records for returns as a soph? hmmm yet Golden boy Collie Crys about Chambers so he is switchced from Austin's side, but that's neither here or there, back to Mckay how many times does he get the ball thrown to him? of course the more chances the ball getting thrown to you the more likely you are to catch it, I gurantee the talent Chambers has would be truely seen if and only if he got as many chances as Mckay has gotten.. Just a thought

Mike,

I knew Tyler Anderson at BYU when I was there, and I'm not surprised at what you're saying; however even now in his 30s, Tyler would beat OC in a 100 meter run.

Tyler Anderson was a tremendous athlete that was as fast as any player that BYU has ever had (we're talking world class speed in his prime). In spite of that, he wasn't a world beater as a college player.

Being a great high school athlete doesn't mean great college player and certainly doesn't mean NFL player.

I'm also very familiar with where you live (I dated a girl from Lake Mary for longer than I'd like to admit); and if you've ever been to the Citrus Bowl, UCF games, or any Orlando Magic NBA games, you've seen many athletes better than OC. (remember Brandon Marshall went to UCF).

side note: I coached AAU ball and the 2 best players I've ever seen in my life were Jaron Rush and Korleone Young; they were dominant hoops players at the high school level. Both were considered #1 recruits in the nation, both could have gone anywhere they wanted, and both are now in drug and alcohol rehab, never having made a serious dime in the pros. There's more to life than pro sports.

You might be right. Tyler might have undersold how difficult it was for non-lds players at BYU, but I assure you that Bronco Mendenhall did not. This is not OCs freshman year, he's been there for 3 years, by now you'd think he'd know the rules and how he's expected to behave.... win or lose.

There is more to life than pipe dreams of NFL glory... a BYU degree means a hell of a lot more than a degree from an open enrollment school like UCF (UCF is basically a large JUCO; anyone can get in)
