5. Bronco not ripping the head off that FReno punk-a beeotch who cheep-shooted Romney. Bronco should have gone all Chuch Norris on his @$$, leaving him in little bits and pieces out on the field. (this last one was TIC - and I don't think I've ever seen the Y sideline as riled up as after that play. That thug should have been kicked out of the game)

What pissed me off is the defense didn't take care of the situation! If that would have happened to one of my team mates, the very next play the lineman would have been stood him up and I would have taken out his knee. Seems brutal but no one gets away with a cheap shot like that and walks away from the game.

Which brings me to leadership on the defensive side of the ball. Rob Morris in the above situation would have taken care of the situation, that was him as a leader ... nay, as a GENERAL. We currently have no leaders on the defensive side of the ball.

Also defensively, we have no one assigned to the QB that knows jack about the option. When you play any team that runs any type of option you have one guy assigned to the QB (during any given play) and when that QB runs any option play he is ALWAYS hit even when he pitches the ball. I can't tell you how many times tonight (and during the AF game) I saw our DE or LB stop and wait to see if the QB would run or pitch the ball.........   idiots.....it's to late by that time to hit the QB or catch the pitchman. This is a coaching problem, you always hit the QB in this situation even if he pitches....ALWAYS!!! It totally legal, it makes him pitch the ball more, and generally gets him more tired and banged up.

Does anyone know how Fuga is doing? It was a brutal hit and the refs looked the other way.

Yeah, and if they go for it and don't get it you'll be saying "You need a field goal and two TDs to tie the game, why would you not take the points!? Stupid!" It's a lose-lose with some fans.

Totally disagreed. The clock was already against us---in this position if we don't score, it doesn't matter anyway. Frankly, down 17 with the clock not on your side, a touchdown was the only real option if you want to win the game. Bottom line, they couldn't stop us and this move undermined the confidence of our players.

You keep saying that they couldn't stop us. Actually they could, they had been doing it all game. BYU had failed on 4th and 4 at the 16 on, what I thought, was a bone headed play call. Nothing is a sure thing with this offense right now, but we did get 3 on that drive. The play call was sound fundamental coaching where you need to get 3 scores and one of them has to be a field goal...they got the field goal. The problem was, the defense really never got the ball back when it had to that entire game.

Logic doesn't follow you here. You need three scores: either 2 tds and a fg, or 3 tds. So, you're working against the clock and you have a chance to knock one out without taking any more time off the clock. This is logical coaching, and an overwhelming majority of coaches would take the fg in this situation. It's not fair to criticize our coaches for using their brains in this instance.

Now let's see - we were +2 in the turnover battle and we held Nevada to just a little over 100 yards in the 2nd half and only 3 points and someone up above is whining that the D never got us the ball to give the O a chance to get back in this game. When the DE gets a pick deep in enemy territory and we go backwards from there - I think the O had their chances. Nevada only socred once in th eentire 2nd half. Somebody must have been getting some stops. And how many times did BYU have to decide whether to kick a field goal or go on 4th down. At least 3 times we went for it on 4th down instead of kicking a field goal becasue the offense could not move the ball. If we kicked those 3 field goals - well if we kick 2 of them and then somehow muster enough momentum to score on the last one and go for 2 - OT.

Maybe next week. THe defense is not perfect, nor are the coaches and Special Teams, but this one rests mainly on the O.

Not to mention the D held Nevada to season lows in production almost across the board, and held them to 24 point less than what they were averaging coming in.

Our O, on the other hand, put up 13 points at home against a team that gave up 24 to Eastern Washington in Reno.

The D and special teams did everything they needed to do to win the game. The O was simply anemic.

Well, Bronco's been coaching the special teams and they've been solid, he coached the D this week and they improved, time for him to take some time with the O.
W

My problem with the coaching:

- You are down by 14 in the 3rd quarter and elect to go for it on fourth and four instead of kicking the field goal. Still plenty of time to get the ball back 3 or 4 more times. That signals no confidence in your defense's ability to stop the other team if by the 3rd quarter you consider it do or die for TD's.

- Bronco and Anae not being on the same page regarding whether they were going for it on 4th down or not. Obviously when it is 3rd and 7 and you run a power play up the middle it would appear that the play caller was under the impression that they had another play to call on 4th down so they were trying to get half the yards on 3rd. Conversely if they knew that a field goal was coming if 3rd down didn't convert you would assume that a pass play would have been called. Go back to the above point, if you knew you were going for it on 4th down when you had 3rd and 4 why not run the ball twice?

- How many fade routes are we going to call for Ashworth? Is he the state high jump champion? Cody Hoffman is 6'4" and Marcus Mathews is 6'5". Would make A LOT more sense to throw a jump ball to your players who can go get it. Someone made a Jazz analogy early asking if you would make Mark Eaton take a game winning free throw, would you also have John Stockton line up for a jump ball? To begin with a fade route in the corner of the end zone is a VERY low percentage play unless you have Terrel Owens/Calvin Johnson type athlete catching the ball. BYU doesn't have these athletes so STOP CALLING THAT PLAY!

- Two minutes left in the game down by two scores. 4th down for the opposing team. It is still possible to win. CALL TIMEOUT. Bronco gave up on the game by not calling that timeout.

- Call for a rugby punt/option from a right footed wide receiver when we are on the right hash. The rugby punt calls for a roll out to the right and then a kick that generally goes to the right. Any one surprised we didn't get good results with that call. We would have gotten more out of that play had we just ran the fake and been stopped. When we put Falslev out there to punt in the future the opponents will sell out for a fake and then if he can really kick it we can surprise them with a kick instead of trying to surprise them that 99 isn't punting it. Nevada would have had to have been brain dead to now switch to a safe punt defense when they see 16 back to punt. The stadium announcer even came over the PA and said JD Falslev back to punt. (Maybe they should tell him not to do announce to the opponents when we might be having a player line up unusually.)

- When you have 4th and short against an offense that has ran the option every single time why not go with the odds and call a defense that brings more pressure from the edges and sends one of the LB's into the gap up the middle with the DE's crashing down to help clog the middle. Send the OLB's on blitzs from the edges with the CB or a safety. You would have more players on the edge than they could block and would easily blow up their play based on how long the quarterback takes to make his read. They did not pass once on 3rd or 4th down and short all night. When they have 4th and short from our 15 and we have yet to stop them why not sell out to try and stop them. If you gamble and are wrong they score, but I don't think there was much hope of them not scoring anyway.

If this is true, it shows me the impact Bronco has on his players when he is more involved. The guys play for him, respond to him. He needs to be a little more hands on in game week, and on the sidelines. Not saying he needs to micromanage. Just saying he needs to pat guys on the back more, and chew out when required. Let the team know that he is watching and expecting them to perform. I want to see Bronco more animated. Not a wild man, but just more.

Bronco DOES need to micromanage his co-ordinators. They simply aren't getting the job done.

Why score when you don't have to? The reason they didn't score as much in the 2nd half isn't because we all the sudden stopped them. They milked the clock and extended drives. We didn't hardly get the ball in the 2nd half, as they were content to take the yards we gave them, and sit on the ball. Up two scores, you'd be crazy to pass the ball and go for long plays when the D can't stop the run if it saved their lives.

Just ask the UNR coach if he would rather hit those season averages, or beat BYU comfortably. He chose the latter, and we chose to give it to him. The only play we put pressure on, we get a pick. Put this one on the coaches again, both offensive and defensive.

Calling the fade route over and over baffled me as well. If you have Beck and Harline or Hall and Collie, fine but they are gone. The fade route requires not only a very athletic receiver but perfect timing between QB and Receiver—NEWS FLASH to RA—there is no timing between Heaps and any receiver. They have not been given the time to develop any timing.

On the other hand we have a QB in Heaps that can rifle the ball into the endzone to anyone that can run a route, separate, and catch! Less finesse and timing needed.

This brings up another thought—throw out the short practice. This teams needs all the practice it can get. Four hours a day would not be too much at this point. I say practice until everyone is on the same page and are assignment sound. Until then there is no reason to leave the practice field. These guys are practice starved not overworked.

And if Ashworth is not going to give 100%, then why is he even out there? There has to be somebody that wants it more.

Add me to that list as well. The fade routes got very old very quickly. It seems like every time we were getting good offensive rhythm going, we'd call one or two of them, and then before you knew it you had 3rd down...

That's all well and good, but the same argument could be made for UNR's performance in their first two games--up 18 and 31 respectively at halftime. Yet UNR reeled off 21 and 17 points in the second half of both games. They scored a touchdown in every quarter of every game this season, but only got one field goal in the second half at BYU.

The D came out in the second half to play, and with the exception of one drive did their work. The O, on the other hand, only put up points with a short field, and only showed any signs of life when they were driving against UNR's prevent defense as time ran out. If only we can get USU to play prevent D from the first snap, we could put up 30 on them.

I think that goes without saying. If we get better coaching we would be better.

Our offensive co-ordinator is bush league, and i'm not impressed with our D coordinator, though I am giving him time because he may not have the personnel he needs on defense. I don't think he is doing a bang up job, though.

Our offense should be better than it has been, and should be loads better than it is right now.

He fell in love with a running qb that couldn't throw, and wouldn't go back and change a thing if he had the chance. SEE: single handedly trying to change everything that makes BYU, BYU. Namely, a passing offense.

Well, it isn't like none of know anything about football. You're down three scores, times running out, we haven't really stopped Nevada the entire game, they can eat up 5-8 minutes at will, and we kick a field goal? and where was they onside kick? you have to try something, just kicking off to them and letting them run out the clock is pretty dumb.

We got out coached pretty bad in this game, and that is as disappointing as the players not executing plays. I was disappointed that Heaps can't throw on the run, and that nearly all of his long throws went out of bounds. Heaps had a chance to start a BYU legend, to get the team and the coaches believing in you, and you keep throwing long balls out of bounds! frustrating! On fourth and a few, Nevada brings the house and just overwhelm everybody, the line, the backs, the QB--game over. They brought ten guys, only the safety stayed back, and we had nobody open? nobody to throw to? at least get rid of it, Nevada gets the ball anyway, just as well throw it in somebody's direction.

And we got no pressure on Kapernick, just nothing the entire game. If Heaps had as much time to throw as Kapernick, he'd have thrown for 350 yards. So I was disappointed in both our Dline and our Oline--Nevada controlled the line of scrimmage. If Rich was not playing safety, Nevada probably would have scored 50 on us.

You're down three scores and the clock is running. Do you take a score with no more time off the clock, or keep running the clock on a gamble? The right answer is OBVIOUS!
