From KSL. It is not very well edited but it shows all of the dropped balls from the USU game. Some of them I wouldn't really blame the receivers for, some are Heaps fault but some of them are horrendous drops. Especially, Ashworth.

Watch it if you dare.

from the article:

There is some room for interpretation as to what is truly a dropped ball, but since I think the Cougar receiving corps has lost the benefit of the doubt I liberally counted 13 dropped passes that would have accounted for roughly 200 yards and 3 touchdowns.

I appreciate that the drops cost BYU significantly against USU but how many of those were on the same drive. You can't score twice in the same drive (Diluigi and Ashworth were back to back weren't they?)

Anyone notice in the 2009 SDSU game highlights Diluigi caught the almost exact same pass that he dropped for the TD? Something is in these guys' heads. BYU better be going for NO DROPS this week, but like Cahoon said, if you're thinking about it, you're likely going to drop it. Hope Heaps wore his arm out this week.

Re-watching this makes my blood boil. Heaps has dealt with these sucky receivers from the get go. In the UW game I remember a sick throw he made to Ashworthless on the run down the sideline that he needled between the CB and Safety. Of course he dropped it and the Jake detractors never recognized the beauty of that read and the touch of the throw.

Anyway, if I were Heaps I would, going forward, be grabbing guys by the facemask and dragging them to the sideline if they drop my throws. It's that simple. Any weekend warrior could make the grabs these guys are dropping and they're making the whole team depressed. Kick their butts and sit them on the bench for the whole game if they are guilty even once. Period.

True, but on the other hand, some of the drops were absolute drive killers and could easily have led to additional scores/yardage (or at least time of possession and better field position) had the passes been completed instead.

that video is painful to watch. man our receivers need to wake up. this is an embarrassment to football.

I would like to see stats for how many times each receiver has been targeted, how many catches, and how many drops. Is this tracked at the college level? Anyone want to go back and watch all the games to find out? :D

At least the receivers weren't they only ones having a bad day. the video shows the ref declining the penalty and signaling for the TD after a PI in the end zone on a throw that wasn't caught.

asking someone to go back and re-watch all the games is just cruel and unusual punishment

can we all just have another laugh at the "holding penalty is declided, touchdown" call? Oh man, that's good stuff!

One last thought, as painful as this video is to watch, it actually gives me some hope for our football team. The vast majority of those drops would have been either 1st downs or touchdowns. If the WRs could've picked up the slack and even cut the number of drops in half (which still would've been too many), just think of the implications: more touchdowns, sustained drives to keep USU offense off the field and rest our defense, momentum shifts and maybe we play with more fire. Who knows? Just some food for thought

Clicking on that link was like spreading your legs and saying "Kick me." You know its coming, then there is the sharp pain at the moment of impact, and the lingering ache after its all done.

and then saying "repeat of 4th down" when it was actually gonna be first down...

What I noticed is that Heaps does not have any fire when a ball is dropped. Heaps has to hold the receivers accountable. IIRC there was pass dropped by one of Detmers receivers (either on BYU or in Pros I cant remember that well) on a 3rd down. Detmer followed him off the field giving him an ear full. Then off the field Detmer continued to lay into him until the receiver had enough and knocked over the gatorade. The guy stood up to Detmer and towered over him trying to threaten him. Detmer simply grabbed his facemask and continued the lecture.

There is nothing I would love to see more than to have Heaps lay into a guy who drops a perfect pass. Maybe something like this from one of the best football movies,

You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You fumble the football and I will break my foot off in your John Brown hind parts...and then you will run a mile.

If heaps did that to his recievers this year, he would lose all confidence in his teammates as a leader. He is a freshman straight out of high school who isn't performing much better then his recievers are right now. His reads are slow, he is not getting the ball out on time and isn't throwing to the right guy all the time either. he throws too hard when he should put touch on the ball and overthows wide open guys in the flat. You have to earn the respect of your teammates in order to be a coach on the field like Detmer was and Heaps isn't there yet. This is one of the reasons a true freshman will struggle starting, because his teammates still look at him as a freshman.

Yeah he is not playing the best, but he is our QB and is learning. We would feel much more confident in him if passes were caught. He has got to take the bull by the horns and lead this team. Freshman or not, the QB is the on field leader. Sure he will make mistakes but everyone on the field knows the role of the QB. It does not make much sense to have JJ get in peoples faces, or Reynolds it has got to be the QB. Max Hall was a sophomore when he started, just one more year than heaps. Anyone here ever doubt who led the team when he stepped onto the field? He may be a bit of a punk but he took command of the offense. Same with Detmer, once he received the nod to start he took command on the field. Our receivers make these catches and we are singing a different tune about heaps.

Now I'm not saying he has to be a jerk or tackle a guy to yell at him but he needs to get in their faces. Watch the game and look at his face after each drop, at least show the receiver your upset. He has had some damn fine passes simply dropped. I especially expect him to do something after that.

Alright, I went through all of the drops and compared them to the play by play at espn and this is where and how drops cost us:

The drops by Diluigi and Ashworth in the endzone cost us 7 points. That drive ended in a missed field goal when we were down 24-3.

The incomplete pass where Jake overthrew Mendenhall for a sure touchdown did not hurt us (other than pride) as we later scored on the same drive with a rushing touchdown by Kariya.

The Jacobsen drop at about our 35 did hurt as the drive ended in a punt. Its possible we tack on another field goal there or keep driving for another touchdown. That cost us 3-7 points.

Pertersons drop, which would have given us a first down, was followed by a holding penalty (2nd and 20 now) and an Ashworth drop that would have given us a managable 3rd and 10. We ended up turning over on downs.

Hence, in all, the drops directly attributed to between 10-14 less points, and only killed two additional drives. This game could have been a lot closer, but without some defensive three and outs, we likely end up with the same result--just not as ugly. Perhaps the offense could have given the defense more rest, but I am not sure that it was fatigue that was getting to BYU since we were driving the ball as much as poor tackling.

I have been saying it since the firing of Hill. The offense has been bad but the defense has not given us a chance to win the game since the AF game. BYU was in the game at FSU until FSU came out in the second half and walked down the field in every drive in the second half for a score. Nevada walked down the field at will in the first half to a 24-3 lead. Utah state walked down the field at will in the first half for a 24-3 lead. If the defense keeps the score close in those games, the team doesn't lose heart and quit. Mind you, there is no excuse for quitting in a game (Heaps didn't have any quit in his eyes in any of those games) but it happened. Bronco is going to fix the defense, we will see how that affects the offense.

Thanks for the analysis. The game would have been a lot closer and maybe even winable with 10-14 more points. Because when BYU's offense is on the field USU's offense isn't. USU likely would not have ended up with as many points simply because they wouldn't have the ball as much.

I'm not saying that without the drops BYU wins the game, all I'm saying is that it would have been winable.
