I cannot imagine how terrible Davies feels right now. This team is on a roll right now, winning, getting national attention, ranked #3 in the country and all that. And now he just let his team and his coaches down. Davies probably wants to just crawl into a hole and die right now. I know I would.

I for one am not going to go all "the sky is falling" just yet. Anderson has had his moments. He was stellar in the first SDSU game, at least defensively.

I'm not giving up on this team

I've said this so many times in the last few years: BYU should have an honor code, but it should only be involved in appropriate things related to the student's relationship with the university itself and not regarding their worthiness in the church. It awful that they still do it this way. A lot of people will disagree and say that this is what makes BYU unique, but I maintain that what makes us unique already can't be avoided. We have teachers that start class with prayer and students are required to take religion courses for crying out loud. Plus 98% of students and faculty are LDS. I'd say that's PLENTY unique. Honor code violations should be with regards to cheating on tests or defacing university property or something. Shoot. If you want to include our dress code in there and be super strict on that too, fine. But snooping around in people's UBER personal lives and punishing them for what is found is wrong in every single way I can imagine. YES all students "agreed" to it, but they never should have had to in the first place to get the experience of going to school with 30,000 Mormons if you ask me. That right there is the real reason people come here, not the stupid honor code nazis.

When I think of what LaVell got away with---yes I just invoked the sacred name of LaVell--I just want to......employ my anger management.

And yes, the girl probably is still enrolled and attending.

This had better be a second offense or something really extreme otherwise,...thats all I am saying. Reactive? Yes. End of the world? NO. Timing very curious? Absolutely!

To me, assuming the girl went and confessed to her bishop and the chain started, is the byu/mormon version of the hussies that follow pro players and then blackmail them.

Davies has/had a long-term girlfriend who lived away from Provo. Besides, we don't even know if it was chastity issues, if it was word of wisdom issues, if it was a first-time offense, etc.

I'm super-disappointed right now, but I think the last thing a 19-year-old kid who just let down a probable-1st-seed team in a MAJOR way needs is for a bunch of people to speculate WHAT exactly he did. I hope he gets his stuff straightened out and comes back.

Agreed with Dcr36 there is no need to speculate. This is just barely breaking and your speculation/jumping to conclusion is poor taste in my opinion.

Don't get pissed at the honor code, get pissed at the player. You don't want to follow the HC, you don't have to go to BYU. I'm sure Coach Rose is saddened more than anything that one of his players chose to screw up so badly.

I don't disagree but the punishement does not fit the crime. Its a spiritual matter and it should be handled that way. people don't get kicked out of their classes when they do this stuff. he should be put on probation and have apunishemtn that fits the mistake he made.

just straight up ending his season is just too much in my opinion. I think its unfair. they don't treat regular students anywhere near that harshly.

honor is good. the way its administered in terms of punishment is ridiculous. yes, it ultimately is davies' fault, he knew what he agree dto and then then didn't follow it, but its a high standard and everybody makes mistakes. it should be there to help them not freakin destroy them.

I may be in the minority but here goes. I am deeply saddened at today's events. SO much in the way of groundbreaking events seemed so close to realization--a number one seed; a deep NCAA run; a chance to make history. And that looks like it might go out the window. BUT I am glad for a school that has standards and holds its students AND athletes to them with consequences, because THAT MY FRIENDS IS LIFE. We are not a school that lets you strangle your girl friend and get a one game suspension. We are not a school that turns the other way to drug abuse and sexual immorality and even when the consequences are at its greatest, we say the standards are more important. As painful as it is, I am glad for that. We do not know what Davies did and do not need to speculate. My mention of some types of honor code violations above is NOT meant to suggest Davies did any of them. I do not know.

I do know that we need to rally around the team...they are on the ropes and they need and deserve our support, perhaps louder and more loyal than ever. Do not blast the honor code. Students know what they are agreeing to. Blast a world that daily whispers eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we die.

You sure that kids don't get dismissed from classes/school for HC violations? I beg to differ.

Wow, Lawboy, you win the prize for the most egregious lack-of-perspective-post of the year.

I had personal dealings with the honor code office whilst studying at BYU and found them to be most professional. I have a hard time believing those of you who think the HC office is on a witch hunt. Unless you've been personally disciplined by the HC office I think you should keep your opinions close-hold, or at least realize that you have little perspective.

i agree. it is hard enough to repent when you make a mistake, but to do it in public is just almost too much. The poor guy. the school should be more careful with this stuff. its just bad pr. i am not justifying davies' actions, whatever they were, but i hate the way they handle this with athletes.

NO WAY!!! Sucks for Davies, sucks for the rest of us. He knew the rules and unfortunately, there's no budging with the HC. They definitely prefer to stick to the letter of the law up there.

Guess this means Noah will switch to the 5. Anderson will spell him. Magnusson/Abouo will probably play the 4. I can't see Rogers or KC playing the 4.

Sweet 16 is still possible, but you can bet teams are going to go right at us underneath.

My post was not about Brandon as much as it is an indictment on the HC office. And my data points have nothing to do with my time there as a student and thats all I am saying.

well i know a few people personally that did some pretty bad things morally that were not touched by the honor code office. it was dealt with by the bishop and that person, the way i think its should be. if they do not take care of it, then the honor code should step in.

It depends. Each case is individually considered.

In other words, it should be just like any other institution of higher learning. This is a tired argument. The HC isn't a secret. It involves no more than average righteous Mormon living (no unmarried sex, no drugs, no alcohol, no weed, etc...). Is that really so hard?

In 2004 I had a buddy who was shooting up heroin in his dorm room and was stealing from campus vendors to pay for his addiction. The HC office found out; they worked out a deal that let him stay enrolled. (Didn't stop him from leaving a few months later, but still. )

Anybody who's painting the HC Office as the resident Gestapo of Utah Valley needs to remember that it, like most church-affiliated institutions, is made up of individuals. Discretion varies from case to case. In most cases where we get upset with them, we're hardly neutral and detached observers, and we rarely have all the facts.

The bishop has discretion as to what he reports to the HC office. The HC office obviously can't act on something it isn't told.

You're right. Let young people do things without any consequences. That will help us restore sanity to our civilization.

Here's one prediction: Rose, Jimmer and Emery will rise to the occasion...I'm NOT saying we will keep winning or go as far, but we will see even better coaching and effort from those guys. They will do us and the school proud

I am truly sad for Davies. This has to be rough on him. He let his team down and that's got to be eating him. Here we see the double standard for athletes: when they are dismissed from school/team, it is front page news.

I am selfishly sad because it hurts our chances the rest of the year. But moreso I really want Davies to get right and get back.

Davies knew the rules.

Personally, though, I think the HC does more harm than good. You have a lot of students at that age in their lives doing a lot of stupid things, especially since it's more than likely their first time away from home. Unfortunately, rather than take care of mistakes they let them fester because of all the "examples" that are made of students by the HC committee. Rather than risk being kicked out, they don't take care of the mistakes, become wracked with guilt, and often then become angry and bitter at the church.

It's a double standard too. A regular student can violate the HC and be put on probation and as long as they don't mess up or get caught again they're fine. No one has to know about it and their status as a student is the same.

An athlete, however, gets kicked off the team the moment they get too close to crossing the line. There goes their principle support system and on top of dealing with the mistake they now also have to deal with embarrassment of being kicked off the team.

As it's set up now, the HC breeds underground, secretive behavior.
