We need a better inside presence next year.

You are all making this about me vs coach rose, when it isn't. Dave Rose is awesome, and we all know it.

The issue is that we have no inside presence next year, and I don't think anyone can contend with that.

Our starting center options are: a 6'10 senior that averages more fouls than rebounds, a 6'9 guy coming off of season ending surgery, or a 6'8 guy that is closer to 6'7 than he is 6'9 (whom I like a lot, but would like a lot more if he had two more inches to give)

And rodgers is perfect for the 3 spot. We don't need to change that.

So you want to pull the scholarship from Winder, a red shirt freshman who hasn't even gotten a chance to play yet? HAHAHA

And there are so many JC bigs out there just waiting for BYU to come calling right? You are delusional dude..

Another problem with going out and trying to sign a JC player for next year's team right now is almost all of the good players are already committed to schools at this point in time.

It came across as you vs Rose with your original title and first paragraph. Only a crazy person would think otherwise. ;)

The loss of Davies will hurt, no doubt, but the injury to CC may not be as bad as it seems. He'll have a good 8 months to recover. Further, BYU has 2 centers returning from missions. Yes, they may well be out of conditioning, but they don't need to play a full game. Getting 20 mins out of them should be enough to compensate. The scoring will come from the guard/forward line again next season. And who knows, Rose does have a scholarship available now that Brandon is off the team so he could potentially recruit another JC guy. Which I thought that's why he picked up Rogers, Winder, and Zylstra.

Lastly, the point many have made is that Rose has been very successful with less talent. We trust him to put out a competitive team next season in spite of the set backs.

Nice regroup/rename. I was with you Blue. We are in big-time trouble. HArward is Anderson 2.0.

Noah is great help-side defense and NOT a back to the basket guy. We have no anchor! And without JImmer and Jax, we have no rudder. BAtton down the hatches boys after this year ANd enjoy what little time we have left with Jimmer.

As a 3 Rogers would still make up part of our Front Line in zone defense and I think we could agree that the dude needs some weight. He could dominate with a few more lbs.

How can you say that Harward is Anderson #2?? Have you seen him play? Need some more info from either Mars or Craigo on him. I thought I read he was pretty decent and could play with his back to the basket

In high school he was great...In high school. Rose runs up tempo. Big, tall, oafy guys don't get up and down the floor very fast, which is why BD was so good in this offense.

Just some info on Harward and Austin:
March, 2009: Harward is an average athlete who really needs to add weight to compete in the Mountain West Conference. He has solid fundamentals and soft hands, but his post skills are still developing. He has an intriguing face-up game for a big as he has shown the ability to take defenders off the bounce with a strong one-bounce move to the basket. He runs fairly well in transition, but his scoring skills need polishing. An area that needs to improve is rebounding. He has a tendency to get pushed around and must get stronger in the paint area at both ends, but overall he possesses a solid upside for the next level.

March, 2009: Austin is an intriguing prospect for the next level. He has a lengthy frame with room to fill out over the next few seasons. He has a knack of filling the lane well and beating his opponent in transition for the finish. Although he doesn't have a go-to move, he is a fairly decent scorer in the paint area. In the half-court set, he moves without the ball very well and should be an ideal fit in a motion style offense. He needs to become a more assertive rebounder and add considerable strength to make a significant impact for BYU during his freshman campaign.

Both players can run the floor, a requirement from Rose. It really depends on whether they develop quickly enough fresh off missions. Rose has the pieces, can he win with them?

Yeah, because the original title of this thread didn't imply anything of the sort

First you want to get rid of Winder who has never even got to play yet? Yeah thats genius man..

Do you really think Rose is just sitting on his thumb and hasnt been looking for a big? Cause there are so many out there that cant wait to come to BYU? If you are going to say things that make you look an idiot then be prepared to handle the criticism.

He doesn't get paid to make those decisions, so why should he waste his time answering your questions???

Hmmmm, lets see. Criticizing the critic without much of an alternative. Who's more stupider?

And since the options look ALOT like Anderson 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0, (none of whom can run with the tempo Rose likes----watch tomorrow for more evidence of this for the rest of this year and probably next--meaning up tempo, that is) The shelf is pretty bare folks.

Wouldnt suggest getting rid of Winder, of course. BUt that leaves two streaky scorers: Charles and Rogers with some help from Noah. BUt wait, he'll be back in the paint which means he will average sub 10 points per game.

So Rose is crazy for not bringing in a JC big man? How do you know that he hasn't been looking for one? Did you read the whole post from the start or just jump in the middle and make yourself look stupid?

At least next year we'll play in the WCC where we can survive without that inside presence.

The tallest guy on St. Mary's roster is 6'9"--they have four guys that size; Gonzaga has two 7-footers whose stats per minute make Anderson look like an all-WCC guy, and then they have one guy at 6'9", and the next is 6'7". I'd put Collinsworth, Anderson, Hartsock and Rogers up against those line-ups no problem.

Given that fact that there is nothing we can really do to add personnel this late in the game without kicking someone off scholarship, and given the fact that BYU will never do that, this is the league you want to be in if you have to win playing run-and-gun.
C
Cougs_Rule
Hey Tim the toolman, didnt you mean "stupider"?

Why did he change the thread title?

Why did he clarify and explain what he meant?

Why are you stuck in the past?

Why are you criticizing the man and me instead of trying to answer the questions at hand?-----Which i'd be happy to spell out for you since that has totally escaped you.

Do we need a better presence inside than it looks like we will have?

Do we need to go out and recruit a JC guy?

Are we going to just take what we get with 3 tall, slow, white guys?

Do we need to drop another guy's schollie and try really, really hard to get maybe even two athletic big guys?

Regardless of the answers, he is simply reacting like many of us, that if Anderson is our future in the paint, we can expect results similar to the frUtes has had the past few years.

Nice switch of title Blue is Better....i can agree with it...But sheesh Rose finds out just last week, is in the middle of playoffs and we expect immediate answers? Let's give the man some time to plot out the future. Has he let us down yet??? NO!

You do realize that Rose is not going to break a commitment to a kid and drop a scholarship, don't you? Especially since the reason they are in this predicament in the first place is because they booted their center from the team for breaking a commitment.

Knowing that makes all of BlueIsBetter's suggestions and solutions moot. We don't have a scholarship to go out and do anything, so like it or not, our roster is what it is for next season.

No use in parading out solutions that simply aren't even on the table. You want a JC guy to fill the hole, but no one has pointed out an available JC guy that is an improvement over Chris Collinsworth (who will be manning the 5 next season, not Anderson), much less one that is a good cultural fit for BYU and who is willing to play without a scholarship. Once you find that guy, the debate can begin, but until then all you are doing is coming up with pie-in-the-sky solutions.
