New Offer:

DE NR Sam Meredith *** (3) 6-4/243/5.32

(Helix HS) La Mesa, CA

High Interest in: Stanford

http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=3779636

A- The kid seems to be Stanford's to lose.

B- That 40 time seems really, really slow for a DE. Manase Tonga for example weighs 240 and runs a 4.80...

He committed to BYU.

"BYU has received a football commitment from DeQuan Everett, a 6-foot-2, 198-pound cornerback from Cerritos Junior College in California. Everett had several offers out of high school but failed to qualify for a Division I program academically. He also had offers from Southern Miss and New Mexico."

"Coaches received a cornerback commitment from someone that may help further call for a switch in coverage tendencies in the near future. It’s been no secret of how much the caliber of play BYU has received at the cornerback position since last season and with this key junior college commitment, that trend looks to continue."

BYU was looking at this kid, but he may be out of the picture now with the most recent commit:

CB JC Darrius Morrow (0) 5-11/177/4.38

El Camino JC

http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=4898321

"Had 12 tackles, six deflections in five games at El Camino (Calif.) College." Just five?

BYU has not offered this player. Offering him: Arkansas, Boston College, CSU, UNM, Syracuse, Tennessee, UCLA, WSU, and Wyoming. He was recently moved from a one-star recruit to three stars, and is now ranked as the #19 Offensive Guard in the nation.

I wonder if he wants to play in the PAC-10, even though he's LDS. He says he's still hoping for more offers.

Also, Still, the WR from Utah, commited to Utah.

Travis Still is good, not awesome. Runs a 4.6, so not a burner, but good size at 6'2". I know we offered him, but I am not really sad he picked Utah. And I live in Spanish Fork and have seen the kid play. Best of luck to him all the same. Hope he enjoys losing to BYU.

Why don't we still offer him? His stats look good... I like the speed.

Since we're thin at safety. We could use DeQuan Everett's size(same height as Andrew Rich I believe) at safety to help Rich, and prepare for a starter next year. A 4.51/40 if fast for anyone who's 6'2". That would make a quick safety as well.

ESPN articles says he has been clocked at 4.42. That is booking for a guy his size. That is NFL corner or safety speed. Hope he can play, because if he can, he will be awesome for us for 2 years.

He came from this years class... while I'm excited to have him, you have to wonder why/how he wasn't scooped up sooner or by a BCS program. The Cougs have done well recently picking up some late JUCO so maybe he simply managed to fly under the radar; but it's entirely possible that he needs a lot of help to succeed at this level.

He has 3 to play 2, so a redshirt could do that. Plus, Bradley, Rich, Logan, and perhaps Aguirre graduate next year, unless he takes a RS year. So might make sense to slap a redshirt on him. I pretty much expect it now. And to see one other corner get a RS, perhaps Eason.

QB Chase Hansen

(American Fork HS) American Fork, UT

http://byu.scout.com/a.z?s=338&p=8&c=1&nid=4849607

BYU is interested in this 2012 kid. Word is they may have even offered him. Utah may have as well. He can also play safety, which is nice.

Another 2012 Utahn kid, DE Troy Hinds, has grown 2 inches and 20 pounds apparently since his profile was last updated a year ago. The kid looks really talented. He has also been offered by both BYU and Utah.

Sounds as if Troy Hinds, who will only be a junior next year, already has offers from BYU, Utah and Nebraska, and more are expected. The kid could end up being the most highly rated and recruited player out of Utah ever. Already 6'6 and 250lbs, and he is just 16. Per TBS, he already has made many unofficial visits to BYU and met with Coach Mendenhall on those occasions. I hope we can land him in the 2012 class, because I suspect he will be a top 50 recruit nationally, or better. He is LDS and has mission plans, and I do believe a BYU fan, so that is helpful for sure. He has stated that Texas Longhorns are his favorite team, however. Let's hope they don't offer him.

I went to Davis High, so I have a more personal interest in the kid that way. Brian Kuresa went to Davis as well, so hopefully he can influence him a bit.

S JC Joe Sampson 6-0/203 (Brian Logan's 1st-Cousin)

[San Mateo JC]

Also Offered By: Utah

http://byu.scout.com/2/966812.html

http://byu.scout.com/a.z?s=338&p=2&c=966493&ssf=1&RequestedURL=http%3a%2f%2fbyu.scout.com%2f2%2f966493.html

So this kid's mom and Brian Logan's dad are siblings. Sold.

He sounds religious, like he would fit in great at BYU. He'll be up here in two weeks, and I bet we see a commit then.

The JC DB route has seemed to work out great so far, and with CB Everett and this Safety I don't see why that won't continue (even Dallin Tollestrup we got from a Canadian JC). Even if some guys, like Lee Aguirre, get frustrated at BYU because they don't see enough playing time- that has to be a GOOD problem. I wonder why we can't recruit and keep great high school defensive backs though? Maybe Gaines, Johnson, and Hanneman will help us turn that tide(and even Levi Gifford). Hopefully we can get Quentin Sargent as well.

Looks like BYU is recruiting a 2011 DE from the midwest. Kid looks big and has more to fill out in his frame. From his video, it indicates that he is part polynesian. Looks LDS with his Scout(Eagle) and Poly connections, but I'm not sure. He has been a starter on varsity since his Freshman year. He has long arms, sheds blocks well, has good pursuit, and impressive stats. Scout.com has an members-only article on him- http://byu.scout.com/a.z?s=338&p=2&c=967607&ssf=1&RequestedURL=http%3a%2f%2fbyu.scout.com%2f2%2f967607.html

I played against Raytown in high school (they had the same mascot as Liberty, the Blue Jays) I'll be sure to check out some of his games this fall and let him know that BYU is representing.
