Reports are that BYU is only looking to give out 13 scholarships this recruiting class, and no more than 15 : http://blogs.sltrib.com/byu/index.php?p=16334&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

9 kids have committed already:

MLB NR Austin Heder *** (3) 6-2/215

DE Moses "Mo Mo" Kaumatule (0) 6-1/235

QB Alex Kuresa (0) 6-0/175

OL/DE Ului Lapuaho 6-6/275

MLB NR Lene Lesatale (0) 6-3/245 (LDS)

RB NR Manoa Pikula *** (3) 6-0/205

DE NR Baker Pritchard *** (3) 6-2/240

DE NR Stehly Reden ** (2) 6-4/235

DT/OL Kesni Tausinga 6-1/275/5.5

Plus there has been one reported "soft" commit, which would make 10 total for this class so far:

DE/TE NR Aulelio Olomua * (1) 6-5/235

So if 10 spots of 13 are gone, that means we're already at the point where there's only room for 3 more kids. Here's a list of the guys that have been offered:

OG #22 Siaosi Aiono *** (3) 6-4/290/5.4

RB NR Harvey Langi **** (4) 6-1/208

OT NR Ryker Mathews * (1) 6-6/280/5.0

RB NR Bryson McKenzie *** (3) 5-11.5/225

DE NR Sam Meredith *** (3) 6-4/243/5.32

S NR Quentin Sargent *** (3) 5-10/175

S JC Joe Sampson 6-0/203 (Brian Logan's 1st-Cousin)

DE NR Brennan Scarlett *** (3) 6-5/245/4.96

DT JC Jesse Williams **** (4) 6-4.5/340

WR #1 Kasen Williams ***** (5) 6-2/197/4.6

And there are at least 5 siblings of current players that have NOT been offered, including Atkinson, Hannemann, Kaveinga, Peck, and Pulisipher. http://www.byucougars.com/Roster.jsp?SP=130

So let's assume that Harvey Langi is BYU's #1 remaining target (he would absolutely MAKE this recruiting class!), and that Jesse and Kasen Williams, like Austin Sefarious-Jenkins, are definitely going somewhere else. Who are the 2 commits you still really want from this class??

For me, I think it's: Ryker Mathews and Joe Sampson. Though Quentin Sargent and Brennan Scarlett look like great players as well. And Aiono, McKenzie, and Meredith are all highly viewed (3 star) players. What do you think?

My top 5 for 2011 are:

Jesse Williams--doubt we get him, though

Joe Sampson

Harvey Langi

Ryker Matthews

Siaosi Aiono

First Option: Brennan Scarlett

I think we can get Peck, Kaveinga and Hahnemann to come as preferred walk-ons.

Jay Drew is claiming that RMs Jake Murphy, Kevin Bills, and Michael Yeck are being counted against that 13 scholarship total for this year, which would mean that this class is completely full already: http://blogs.sltrib.com/byu/index.php?p=16346&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

But he's ignoring Solomone Kafu and Brock Stringham, who also return from missions this year. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700006585/BYUs-unique-approach-to-recruiting.html?pg=2

I've also heard that LBs Alisa, Pritchard, and Hadley may be back from missions in time for the 2011 season.

Also, Tidwell says they still want a cornerback and a safety for this class, which is odd because they haven't offered a CB right now: http://www.sltrib.com/collegesports/ci_15129572

I don't think there's any way Langi or either Williams gets left out if they commit. That probably wouldn't happen to Ryker either. Perhaps they are just waiting to see which of the two safeties commits first. Or maybe they want to move one of those to CB. Who knows?

It's a long time until February. You are going to free up one scholarship when Matt Reynolds declares for the draft. You are going to have additional victims of the honor code. You are going to maybe lose one quarterback to transfer. Also it seems that there is at least one player who decides to give up football early. I bet at a minimum we have 15 scholarships come February.

It's a long time til signing day; the coaching staff is using this "lack" of available scholarships as leverage to get early commits, but the truth is that there will be scholarships available for every elite player they're pursuing before then.

Not to mention that the younger Hanneman (as is his older brother )and others intend on missions before they enroll.

I dont' think Ryker Mathews dream school is BYU and I wouldnt' be surprised to see him go elsewhere.

I also don't think we'll see Quentin Sergeant at the Y; he's not a good fit based on the honor code from what I hear.

I do think that Kasen will at least make a trip to Provo... who knows what magic Jake Heaps can work...

Give me Langhi, and some players to improve our secondary depth (we lose quite a bit after '10) and I'll be happy. I'll take a couple 2 star brian logans from the juco ranks and be ecstatic.

Closest thing is Logan's cuz, Joe Sampson. He would be awesome for us.

Peck was offered a scholarship by Utah State this week. We'll see if he would still rather walk on at BYU than have his schooling paid for...

S NR Bridger Peck * (1) 6-2/190

(Bingham HS) South Jordan, UT

BYU has apparently extended an offer to a 7th player from Bingham High (aka BYU Prep. He is a linebacker and origninally would have played for Kaihuka HS until his parents.

Who is he and what do we know about his skill set?

I'm assuming it's this kid... and he'll be a jr. next season not a sr.

Jared Afalava, 6-2, 210, LB

Bingham better not give up a single point next year or I'm going to feel ripped off.. since we're literally banking our future on half their team.

I agree with this 100%. It used to be Timpview, now it is Bingham. Not sure I love getting all the early commits in a year with limited schollies, especially when a couple of them look suspect, at best. I was hoping for a stronger class to back up the 2009 class, but 2010 looks to average so far.

If we get Langi, then I will be happy with the class.

Cool story on 2011 BYU recruit JCer Josh Atkinson: http://byu.scout.com/2/974087.html

Another 2011 kid that BYU hasn't offered yet, but others have:

OT JC Fou Fonoti (0) 6-5/306/5.0

[Cerritos JC]

Offered by: Arizona, FIU

http://jcfootball.scout.com/a.z?s=87&p=8&c=1&nid=4927248

Great size, good speed! Man, some of these kids are just coming onto the radar too late to be a part of a very small recruiting class- it's too bad BYU can't give 40 kids a year a scholarship. :D

Also, here's a good read for the 8 official commits of the 2011 class so far: http://universe.byu.edu/node/8848

For those who worry how many of these kids come from Bingham, well, that High School is ranked #8 nationally next season! http://www.maxpreps.com/news/-b7ZWmxQEd-lugAcxJTdpg/high-school-football-top-25-contenders-(continued).htm

Finally, I thought young WR Dylan Collie might shy away from BYU because of the heat his brother received for his "Magic happens" comment and later for leaving school a year early. But that doesn't seem to be the case. Dylan was in Provo from NorCal recently to visit friends of his on the BYU football team and toss around the ol' pigskin. Made me glad to hear.

"Among some of the other Bingham players in attendance was recently offered outside linebacker Jared Afalava. "[Afalava] was looking good as usual,” Kesni Tausinga said. “He was doing one-on-ones with the o-linemen and was doing really well. I thought that was great because he's going to be playing outside linebacker, so he's going to be going up against all those big o-linemen. "Jared is a stud and he did really, really good in the one-on-ones," Kaumatule said. "I thought he really showed up and dominated out there. He's a stud."

http://byu.scout.com/2/975072.html

Also: " Cottonwood High School prospect Ben Heimuli, a cousin of BYU fullback Anthony Heimuli, also attended BYU’s Junior Day. He was a standout player at the All-Poly Camp a few years ago as a tight end, but has since switched positions and is doing well. “I don't think BYU's offered [Heimuli], but he was playing middle linebacker,” Tausinga said. “I thought he did really well and he'll be a junior this year." "

And: " In the secondary, one prospect that stood out during the drills was Alta High School defensive back Austin Lee. "He's a year younger than me, but man that kid is dang good … He's a good kid and a stud and I know him a little bit from SPARQ, where we work out,” Kaumatule said. “He's a real humble kid and I like him a lot. He did really well out there." "

I understand that Timpview's Colby Jorgensen (Class of 2011) accepted an offer at the Cougar's recent Junior Day.

What is his position, vital stats, ranking, etc.
