Remember the kid wearing the BYU sweatshirt in his photo? BYU offered him this week. He just committed... to Washington. http://washington.scout.com/2/980168.html

TE NR Jarett Finau ** (2) 6-3.5/232/4.65

(Juanita HS) Kirkland, WA

Offered by: Arizona, Hawaii, Utah State, Washington, Washington State

His reasons:

1- Washington is very close to home, so his mom and dad can attend every one of his games.

2- Sarkisian is Mormon, and will let him go on a mission.

Yeah, commit to a Mormon that drinks coffee during TV interviews. Something tells me Finau's mission plans will work out just as well as those who committed to Sark's mentor, Carroll.

Sark is Catholic...

Really? Wow. Egg on my face...

" Finau cited the fact that Washington is close to his eastside home, so his parents don't have to travel to see him play in college. He is also Mormon, and it helped that Washington's Head Coach, Steve Sarkisian, went to BYU. "Since he went there, he just understands the whole jist to it," Finau said, adding that he definitely plans on serving his two-year mission after going to school first for a year. "Coach (Sarkisian) said he would honor that." "

"Although he attended Brigham Young University, a Mormon institution, Sarkisian is Catholic." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Sarkisian

I didn't know he was recruited to BYU by DeWayne Walker either...

Steve Sarkisian is not LDS. He's Catholic. That's A-Ok. The unforgiveable sin?? In 2004 he was the QB Coach for the Oakland Raiders!!!! LOL!!! ;)

They cropped out BYU's logo on Jarett Finau's hoodie. What a bunch of wankers.

What's up with Washington landing a few of our recruits? Has it always been this way, and I'm just noticing it after Steve Sark took over?

OR

Has Steve Sark been pursuing the LDS recruits pretty heavily???

I was told that when Sark got the UW job, he called up Bronco and Whit and told them both that he planned on recruiting LDS kids, and Utah in particular. And this does seem to be the case. Can't say I blame him either.

As to Finau, TE is not really a position I feel too bad about when we lose a player. We always seem to do really well in that area. It is the D-line or skill guys I hate to lose. Best of luck to the kid. UW is about to get really good again.

Too bad we won't be able to play them after this year, to show them just how good they will be. It's a shame Washington backed out on the final two games with us.

"According to a source at Davis High in Kaysville, Utah, BYU football coaches have offered a scholarship to Davis offensive lineman Zach Lindsay, a 6-foot-7, 250-pound athlete. Lindsay will be a junior at Davis this fall and is only 14 years old. The offer was extended last week, after Lindsay earned MVP honors for offensive linemen at a recent BYU camp. Another Davis player, senior-to-be Troy Hinds, a defensive end, also has a scholarship offer from the Cougars (along with five other Division-I programs). Lindsay is also a member of Davis’ varsity basketball team."

He committed awhile ago. He will be a good one. Wants to play but I kind of hope for a redshirt, he will need him the next 2 years.

Agreed, unless they can successfuly move Bradley, Logan, or Everett to free safety (I mean nobrainer successfull) you have to redshirt the kid.

We lose Rich, Bradley and Logan after this season and we'll be in need of talent and depth the 2 seasons after that. Considering the young talent that we have at other positions that will peak after this season, having Everrett and Sampson in the secondary when the rest of our linebacker corps and dline is experienced will be huge.... He gets 3 free seasons of scholarship and we get 2 seasons with 2 top caliber DBs (everett, Sampson) to go with our current youngsters from the 2010 recruiting class (we also will have Eason for another year and Garrett Nicholson (he's coming back), Robbie Buckner, and a few others in addition to the 2010 kids).

It simply means that the dropoff in the secondary from 2010 to 2011 will not be dramatic; and I suppose there's always a chance it could be better; though I'm partial to Logan Rich and Bradley.

A different JC DB BYU was looking at for 2011:

CB JC Donovan Henley (0) 5-10/165

[Glendale JC] Glendale, AZ

(Marcos de Niza HS) Temple, AZ

"Donovan Henley - CB from Marcos de Niza - The 5-10 165 pounder started 10 games last year for the Gauchos and made 34 tackles and 1 INT. Is getting interest from BYU and Utah State."

No idea what class. 2012? He doesn't appear to have a Scout.com profile page yet.

Trent Matthews

"One of the top prospects from one of the top high school programs in Texas made his way to BYU’s camp this past week. Following a week of working out with BYU coaches and familiarizing himself with the school and football program, he was met with a scholarship offer. TBS caught up with this Judson prospect to learn of how his week went and where he’s at in the recruiting process. "

He is not LDS and said that he would prefer to play closer to home in Texas. But said BYU shares his values. Big 12 invite could help here with the playing closer to home, as would the TCU game every 2 years. Playing at Texas in 2011 as well.

This ESPN article gets it right (for once)

keep in mind there were several other BYU recruits (including the Bingham gang) at that camp, but these are the two that stuck out.

Both are better than the 2 stars they have right now and both have the measurables to be 4 star players...

Colby Jorgensen, 6-6.5, 220, Timpview (Provo, Utah) TE

Jorgensen is an incredible athlete and might have had the best overall performance among all campers in Provo. He has great size and might have been the fastest receiver in the camp. He also showed excellent hands and has the ability to play as a big outside receiver at the next level if he’s not able to put on the weight to move to tight end.

Ryker Mathews, 6-4.5, 293, American Fork (American Fork, Utah) OL

Mathews is one of the elite offensive linemen in the West region and is vastly underrated right now. He has four scholarship offers on the table but should have double digits after seeing him in Provo. He has great size and strength and moves extremely well. He is tough, physical and one of the most competitive players we’ve seen this year.

these are our current commits... of that group, only Corbin Kaufusi deserves 2 stars or less, everyone else is a 3 star player or better

Kaufusi is smaller than what he is listed there (makes you think that the SID pulled some strings to make the kid feel good since he isnt' looking anywhere else, while a couple of the 2 star guys that we know are better are being kept under wraps for a reason)

This is rounding out to be a very good class. Add Sampson, Mathews, Langi and another athletic dline or safety and this would be quite a successful recruiting season.

How many scholarships does BYU really have left? Based on past accounts, we should be a negative number, not even a positive one, and yet you know a guy like Langi can commit whenever he wants...

I've heard we have anywhere from 13-15 scholies for the 2011 class. If Te'o is leaving BYU, that frees up another. I saw about 10 offers outstanding. Of course, some of those dry up as others commit. Some of those commits will be sign and send on missions so they don't really affect this class' numbers.

I've seen that Ryker Mathews is the #1 recruit out of Utah over at Rivals, while Langi is #1 on Scout. Also, on Scout, BYU has the most of the top 10 instate recruits, while it's Utah that has the most over at Rivals. Which is better? Dunno since both school compete equally well.

All I know is that I really, really wanna see Langi in Cougar Blue next season as well as Mathews. Kasen Williams ain't coming to BYU, but we could land Sampson, another JC CB with 4.40 speed. Wouldn't it be nice.

There are a couple recruits planning on missions 1st too. We have room for the other 4-5 guys we covet.
