The way you will know that Bronco has faced the music

I thought it was hilarious listening to the last call in show after the Wyoming game. They had interviewed Logan a little earlier and he had mentioned something about how the team struggles with the 'fair-weather fans' and how maybe a shutout will keep them off their backs for a few days. And then these fair-weather fans who are always complaining started calling in practically crying because Logan had called them a 'bad name.' Mark Lyons who I am coming to respect more and more each week basically called these losers out and said, you can sit on your couch and call into the radio talking about how poorly BYU is playing, or Bronco is coaching, but if they make the same comment about how poorly you're being a fan you can't take it?

Go Cougars!

I don't know if it's just the general expectations coming into this season with a senior QB and proven TE/RB, or if a lot of it happened after the OU win, but either way too many people have been too harsh on the coaching staff and specific players - most of it unwarranted and baseless (to think that a month ago people were calling for Max Hall's head, and a few still are!).

I admit that after the OU game I thought "this will be our year," but I'll also admit I entered the season expecting 10-2 and hoping for 11-1; I just didn't expect BYU to beat OU, FSU, TCU and Utah. So I've just had to remind myself that we're right where I expected us to be. Losing to Utah would be a huge disappointment, but I don't see it happening yet.

Over the last few weeks, Bronco has made repeated references to the "ignorance" of fans, to their unreal expectations, to their undeserved criticism...even going so far as pointing out that the team enjoys the away games because they can get away from the critical fans. HOW SAD IS THAT?!?

I suppose I'd think that it's maybe a "new generation" thing expecting immediate gratification, but from the comments of many of you at games, it doesn't seem to be coming from the studentbody alone.

I agree that fans can be overcritical. I have my likes and dislikes about how things play out through the season (like our lack of offensive halftime adjustments), but I love Bronco's coaching style and I support the coaches and teams 100% and realize they are in the thick of things and I'm just watching from home.

I also think Bronco would benefit himself and the team by treading lightly when criticizing fans. I personally haven't heard or read him use the word "ignorant" when describing fans, and if he did it wouldn't bother me since I'm a blue-goggled homer and I've been a fan a long time and will be so long after the current coaches and players are gone. But, there are a lot of not-so-stalwart fans out there that still love the school and the team....and although they may be critical (and ignorant) I believe they are valuable to the team. The quickest way to alienate them is to call them ignorant or say the team likes away games where they can't show up.

Again, I can't say that I've heard Bronco being critical of the fans or liking away games, But, I do recall him recently saying how much he loved the large fan base that travels with the team since he views them as faithful die-hards. Maybe in that context he also was implying that the wishy-washy fans were left behind and that's a good thing.

I don't think Bronco said fans were ignorant or that he prefers to play on the road either. And if he did say something that sounds like that, I don't think he believes that. It is inconsistent with everything else I've heard him say.

Problem is that many people don't listen to Bronco's comments in context. They listen to sound bites played on the radio or quoted by detractors and then interpreted by morons like Gordon Monson and his fellow BYU haters at 1280. Sure, Bronco could be more careful to not give his detractors sound bites that can be exploited to show that he is "arrogant" and "hates fans." But anyone who believes any of that garbage is true hasn't paid very much attention to Bronco and what he has said over the past 4-5 years, in my opinion.

Bronco didn't say that. Jan Jorgensen, Jaime Hill, and Brandon Bradley have said exactly that though. They don't like getting booed at home, they don't appreciate our fans when they are negative and the pressure they put on them, so they enjoy games outside of Provo more and look forward to leaving the state for road games.

They play like they get up better for road games this year as well. Some of our boys need to grow thicker skin, obviously. Jan has been a whiny baby in the media all year, sad to say. Still, I do like how they've looked on the road, and I do think that too many BYU fans are TOO negative. Not that I mind booing when it looks like the defense, offense, or coaches have quit on us in a game, like against FSU and TCU.

Keep in mind that these are the genius fans that boo when Bronco doesn't go for it on 4th and 1 from our own 38. I'll keep saying this: anyone who boos a team who has been ranked for three years straight and gives supreme effort like our cougs deserves to have their @$$ kicked.

I agree with you on Jan. Every time I listen to him, he sounds like he is placing the blame somewhere besides himself. I'm not suggesting that the blame belongs with him, but you can't make the comments he has made about the team, coaches, and fans that he makes and still be a good leader. His attitude is a major problem, if you ask me.

I think you guys are the ones who need to pay closer attention to what Bronco is actually saying. Straight from his weekly news conference after the Wyoming game: "Bronco said his teams "like" going on the road, saying camaraderie has been a factor in giving his team an "increased focus" away from home, adding that road trips provide "a nice break from campus life." He says road games also give his team a break from the "local perspective" on how the team might be doing. "

Liking one thing does not mean you dislike the other thing. Liking road games is not mutually exclusive with liking home games. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. Just because Bronco points out some of the advantages that come with playing on the road (and the particular advantages that were realized that week) does not mean he hates the fans and would rather not play in his own stadium. This is exactly what I am talking about when I referred to talking his statements and twisting them to mean something he doesn't actually mean or believe.

I also think Bronco would benefit himself and the team by treading lightly when criticizing fans. Just because you like playing on the road doesn't mean that you hate playing at home. The two are not mutually exclusive. There are many advantages and disadvantages to both (playing at home and playing on the road). Bronco pointing out some of the advantages of playing on the road (especially after they had a big road win on Saturday) does not imply that he hates the fans and would rather stay away from Provo and Lavell Edwards Stadium.

This is the perfect example of what I am talking about. People take a pretty straight forward comment from Bronco and twist it into something that he never said and never meant. How does recognizing the lack of distraction and pressure from fans on the road translate into fan hate?

Yeah, so far this year I wish my season tickets had been for road games, they seem to play better there...

Hey sorry, been working crazy long hours...

We have better talent at CB than we have had the last 3 years, but they aren't great... or they aren't used correctly... however you look at it, opposing QBs look like Heisman candidates every game they play against us (unless you are from Laramie.) And much credit to the defense for the WY game, even though it was Wyoming, they still looked imposing. So to answer your question, I am torn... It's the players or coaching, or both... Our running D looks ok, but our passing D is horrible at best... I think it is coaching, with a teeny bit of blame to the players. They are improving every game though, and I respect that.

This issue has been discussed ad nauseum here. I suggest you search through older posts. Briefly, though, it's not the cornerbacks. Scout's honor.

I don't know. I thought the one punt behind a bunch against TCU was a terrible call. And yes, I booed in the same situation when we punted on 4th and 2 down 20-3 in Bronco's home opener against Boston College. I still think I was right on that one.

Bronco considers our special teams one of the top units in the program. I think he's more right than wrong.

Punting- Very good now.

Punt coverage- very good.

Field goal blocking- very good.

Kick returns- good.

Kick-offs- good.

Kick coverage- decent.

Punt returns- bad.

Field goals- terrible.

Here is the thing. Fans come to games now and the place sells out. Some fans even boo. That means that they care. If some players hate it now, remind them what it was like with Crowton, where people stopped coming and no one booed because expectations got so low. People got so flabbergasted that they stopped coming and became complacent and indifferent. Given the alternative, I will take an engaged and passionate fan base that might be unreasonable at times to an indifferent no-show fan base. Expectations cut both ways, but it is better to have them.

Wait, nobody booed during the Crowton years? Man, there's a lot of nobodies out there!

I did not say that they did not boo. Just that by year 4, there were fewer boos, were fewer people in seats, with more apathy as a result. Attendance dropped to below 55K. Unheard of in 20+ years. Boos from a sellout=passion. Boos from a 55K crowd=anger and frustration with apathy.

FWIW, The Las Vegas Review-Journal is reporting Anae as a potential candidate for the now vacant Rebels job. Anae coached for a couple of years in the 90's.

Others Mentioned:

Robb Akey, Turner Gill, Bobby Hauck, Pat Hill, Nick Holt, Dirk Koetter, Rocky Long, Rob Ianello, Andy Ludwig, Brent Venables, and Kirby Wilson.

I think there is no way Gill, Hill, or Koetter take the job.

At least we know people are looking.

Great, now anytime we're facing UNLV and they have a 2nd and 2 in our territory, we can expect a 30 yard pass attempt - nothing like being able to read your opponents' minds!
